T-Mobile scrambles as 911 outage leaves two dead in Texas
by Guest Chris Mills- 0 replies

We take it for granted that if you pick up a phone and dial 911, someone will pick up at the other end. That hasn't been happening recently in Texas, and T-Mobile is left standing naked in the spotlight after a series of errors left 911 calls on hold, and two people dead. Continue reading... Nintendo Switch sales are already slowing down
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Nintendo's new Switch console launched earlier this month after months of anticipation. Gaming fans couldn't have been more eager to put the Wii U behind them and move on to what looked like an exciting new console. The Switch, of course, is a fun new take on home gaming that combines a home video game console with a portable console. Nintendo's Switch has been very well received by reviewers and early adopters alike, and early sales looked very promising. Now, however, freshly reported sales figures suggest that Switch sales are already beginning to slow significantly, which could be a troubling sign depending on the root cause of the slowdown. If it seems like LG's G6 has taken a long time to actually arrive after being rumored, leaked, and reviewed, that's because, well, it has. OnePlus just pulled a move we didn’t see coming. The company announced a special OnePlus 3T edition that will be sold only in Colette stores in Paris, and a phone version you’ll probably not going to be able to buy. OnePlus is only making 250 units of the black OnePlus 3T, but you’re much better off not buying the thing. Yes, the special edition OnePlus 3T is black, and this appears to be the phone’s only new feature, but you should still stay away from it. And no, this isn’t a sour grapes kind of thing. How Russian hackers breached your Yahoo Mail account
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
The Department of Justice on Wednesday identified four people, including two Russian spies and two criminal hackers, as the main suspects behind one of the biggest data breaches in the world. Yahoo was hacked in 2014 but the company only disclosed it two years later, when it confirmed that more than 500 million accounts were breached. A report explains how hackers were able to breach into your Yahoo Mail account, revealing that they did not get access to all 500 million accounts at the same time, and that Yahoo could have prevented the damage had it taken faster actions against the intruders. Consumer Protection Agency just recalled Xbox One smart chargers because they keep melting
by Guest Mike Wehner- 0 replies
Gamers are an impatient lot and that's something I can attest to first-hand, so it's really no surprise that charging accessories that promise a more convenient way to juice up rechargeable game controllers tend to sell pretty well. There's plenty of knock-off brands making "quick," "smart," and "easy" charging docks, and while it's usually advisable to avoid the brand names you don't recognize, the Consumer Product Safety Commission just issued a recall for an Xbox One charging station from one of the most popular names in batteries: Energizer. Google is constantly adding great new features to Google Maps, but there's still plenty that it can't do. For example, if you want to follow a friend or family member to a location you haven't previously visited, you can't take a joint road trip with Google Maps, which is why you might want to try out Follow instead. The world’s first lab-grown chicken tenders look better than McNuggets
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

A Bay Area food startup just served the world’s first chicken strips made that was cultivated in a lab directly from cells. No chicken was killed to obtain it, and fewer resources were consumed to make it, although it’s still a pretty expensive process. However, this type of growing meat could revolutionize the meat industry in the future, as different startups are already growing various kinds of meat, not just chicken. Continue reading... Government contractor says we could have a base camp around Mars by 2028
by Guest Mike Wehner- 0 replies

At this point it's clear that humans are headed to Mars sooner or later, and it's just a matter of when, who, and exactly what their mission will be. Aerospace juggernaut and government contractor Lockheed Martin is pretty bullish on the concept of humanity paying a visit to the red planet and even proposed a timeframe for when such an adventure would be possible: 10 to 12 years. The next version of iOS could kill 187,000 old apps
by Guest Chris Mills- 0 replies
iOS 11, the next version of Apple's mobile OS expected to launch this spring, is likely going to kill support for 32-bit apps. That's going off the fact that the latest iOS 10 beta, iOS 10.3, has a pop-up that informs users using old apps that "this app will not work with future versions of iOS." You hopefully aren't still using any older 32-bit apps, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. An analytics firm has estimated that 187,000 32-bit apps remain on the App Store. Once iOS 11 rolls out, they're going to die off in short order. Continue reading... Trending right now: Tesla’s unannounced Model Y gets brought to life in new concept photo Warning: Da…

Your Uber horror stories have nothing on this
by Guest Mike Wehner- 0 replies

Everyone who uses ridesharing apps has at least a couple of horror stories. But regardless of whether yours was the result of a creepy driver, a disgusting back seat, or an awkward conversation with someone who doesn't have much in the way of people skills, it's got absolutely nothing on this one from Seattle. That's because it ends in a massive fire ball and (presumably) plenty of screaming. Continue reading...
