Elop confirms Microsoft won’t abandon Nokia’s Android phones
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Did you think Microsoft would unceremoniously axe the Nokia X line of budget Android phones the minute it finalized its acquisition of the one-time Finnish mobile icon's handset division? Well, think again. Former Nokia CEO and current Microsoft exec Stephen Elop said on Friday that the newly formed Microsoft Mobile division will remain "committed to continuing our support for feature phones, the Asha family, and the Nokia X family of devices, announced at the Mobile World Congress in February." AcDisplay app brings the Active Display feature to your Android KitKat device
by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies
Active Display is a feature that most of the Android devices lack. Moto X was the first phone to implement the Active Display feature and it was soon ported to other devices by the ChameleonOS developers. Active Display works by displaying your notifications on your display in a minimalist fashion, without turning on your entire display. It gives you the information you want while saving battery. You can either ignore them, open the notifying app or view the notification’s preview. The drawback of the Active Display feature created by the ChameleonOS team is that it’s limited to phones with a custom ROM. Thanks to XDA developer AChep, any device now running on Android …

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The HTC USA Product Team took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything today and provided some great news for consumers in North America that purchase future flagship devices. After a device is released, the team will continue to issue Android updates for at least two years. So this means that when the upcoming HTC M8 finally gets released, owners can expect updates for the next twenty-four months. Here’s why the company has decided to make the promise: To address an issue that’s top of mind for many folks here, we recently announced that we wouldn’t be updating the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2. Without the support of our chip manufacturer Nvidia, it made a gl…

Ashton Kutcher will design Lenovo smartphones
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Hey, remember when BlackBerry hired Alicia Keys to be its "creative director?" Well it looks like Lenovo is going one step farther because it's decided to let actor Ashton Kutcher design a new line of smartphones that it will launch later this year. Re/code reports that Lenovo Chief Marketing Officer David Roman confirmed Kutcher's involvement in new smartphone designs and said that "I know on one level, it sounds corny, but it is real." Roman added that Kutcher "not only sees himself as an engineer but he is an engineer." However Kutcher decides to design his phones, he'd be wise to stay away from cross-promoting them with fellow celebrity Ryan Seacrest's knockoff BlackB…

The Samsung Galaxy S 5 will feature a baby monitor
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
The new Samsung Galaxy S 5 has a number of great new features, including a heart rate sensor and a fingerprint scanner. But that’s not all that the new device is set to include. Now we know that the Galaxy S 5 will also include a baby monitor, alerting the parent when their child starts crying. This new feature isn’t exactly being advertised, and is actually kind of hidden inside the “accessibility menu” of the device. Essentially, the device emits vibrating alerts on a Galaxy Gear that’s paired with the device. According to Samsung, the feature works best when the S5 is within 1 meter of the baby and there’s no background noise. Source: SoyaCincau Via: GSMArena …

Vivo Xplay 3S delayed until late February
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
When Vivo officially announced their new Vivo Xplay 3S smartphone back in December, they were hoping to lay claim to the first smartphone to hit the market with a 2K display. That official announcement followed several leaks in November, like one showing the device’s screen in action. Unfortunately, producing prototypes that help demonstrate a new technology is different from mass production for consumers, a situation that Vivo has been dealing with much to their chagrin. After missing a January 15th sale data, which was already a reschedule of a December 12th launch date, Vivo pushed availability of the Xplay 3S out to February 12th. Obviously that day has come and go…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/f14d684ae7af305efa77fbb1e5ff5703.jpg Following the many reports detailing those extremely accurate iPhone 6 clones from China that run a highly customized Android version that makes them look like genuine iOS devices, TechRadar has obtained images that reportedly show the iPhone 6 in its retail packaging. However real the images may appear to be, and it looks like they have not been doctored, chances are they’re not showing the real deal just yet. Are dual-boot phones the most useless innovation ever?
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Now that we know both Microsoft and Google are working to stop OEMs from releasing dual-boot devices that combine Windows Phone and Android, maybe we should thank them. Ars Technica's Peter Bright makes a compelling case that while it may sound cool to have two platforms running on one mobile device, in the real world such devices are a complete mess that will only frustrate and confound most users. Here are 6 photos of Google chairman Eric Schmidt's new $22 MILLION Hollywood mansion
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has a whoooole lot of money. And when people with a whooooole lot of money get bored, they buy new houses. The latest addition to Schmidt's growing collection is the $22 million beauty pictured above, and Forbes dug through the MLS website to pull out the few available photos of the Hollywood home. Schmidt's new 1.3-acre property is conveniently located mere steps away from Hugh Hefner’s famed Playboy Mansion, and the Google chairman can also now count Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine and Petra Ecclestone, current owner of the Aaron Spelling Manor, as neighbors. Schmidt is currently No. 49 on the Forbes 400 with a net worth of approxima…

At long last, someone has released a real ‘iPad killer’… and it’s Apple
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

http://cdn.bgr.com/2014/10/ipad-air-2-21.jpg?w=581 There was never any doubt that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus would be two of the best selling phones of the year, but Apple might have to grapple with an unintended side effect of the success of its latest flagships devices. According to the latest data from Compare My Mobile, 12% of pre-2014 model iPad owners traded in their tablet for an iPhone 6 and 8% downsized to an iPhone 6 Plus, reports PhoneArena. You might be helping Google make a fortune without even knowing it
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
A lot of you out there are helping Google rake in cash without even realizing it. Econsultancy draws our attention to a new study from UX firm Bunnyfoot that shows only 36% of users understand that Google Adwords are actually paid advertisements and not organic search results, even though Google clearly marks them as ads. This is actually an improvement from last year, when Bunnyfoot found that 81% of Google users clicked on Google Adwords and fully 41% of all users didn't know that they were ads. While Google obviously doesn't mind that so many people are unwittingly giving ads their clicks, it also means that the company is in a somewhat precarious position: If more and…

Dayframe 2.1 brings back Chromecast support
by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies
Last week, we reported that cloud.tv removed Chromecast compatibility from its Dayframe app upon Google’s request. The reason behind this is that developers weren’t allowed to release any Chromecast compatible app until the updated version (4.2) of Google Play Services app had been released. Fortunately, Google yesterday announced that the rollout is complete and that the Google Play Services 4.2 SDK is now available. As a result, Dayframe developers were quick to release version 2.1 of the app which brings back Chromecast support. This is a good news for folks who’ve been waiting eagerly for the Chromecast support to be added again. However, you can get the Chromec…

Google adds indicator for In-App purchases to its Play Store website
by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies
Following the changes made to the Google Play Store app last year, Google has also made a little change to its web version of the Play Store as well. The Play Store will now indicate, below the ‘Install’ button, whether an application includes in-app purchases (IAP) as well . Google added an indicator for in-app purchases to its Play Store app last December, and it’s good to see that it has ported the change to its web version as well. This is useful to decide whether an app is worth the try or not. However, it’s quite difficult to determine whether the app is a freemium model and is completely based on in-app purchases or it only includes a few in-app purchases to re…

T-Mobile is changing its JUMP! plan to allow unlimited upgrades and include tablets as well
by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies
A few days ago, we reported that T-Mobile would be changing its JUMP! plan to include tablets and unlimited upgrades. The rumor turned out to be true as T-Mobile officially announced that the change will take place starting on February 23. After the change, JUMP will no longer restrict customers to 2 upgrades per year. Instead of requiring customers to wait up to six months before upgrading their phone, they can now upgrade whenever they want without any restriction. However, they will have to pay off at least 50% of the cost of the device to be eligible for an upgrade. In addition, customers can now purchase tablets with a JUMP plan. This means that if you frequent…

Google Glass banned at San Francisco bar, etiquette for wearables continues to develop
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
California establishments seemed to have been the most lenient when it comes to Google Glass policies, but recent news from a San Francisco bar would prove otherwise. In a somewhat “techie” area of the city, a bar known as The Willows has banned customers from using Google Glass while in the restaurant. A sign has been placed outside, which states, “Our patrons have expressed concern with being recorded while enjoying themselves at The Willows.” An image of a pair of Google Glass is under the statement, with a large red circle and cross running through it. “Kindly remove before entering,” is printed below the image. Because “the customer is always right,” it makes…

However, the publication only saw a non-working prototype, though it was the final design version of the smartwatch. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

O2 Germany teases Samsung Galaxy S5
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Wireless carrier O2 Germany has added a new page to their web site teasing the Samsung Galaxy S5. The page gives potential buyers the opportunity to sign up to receive updates on the availability of Samsung’s forthcoming smartphone. The only clue about timing is an indication that consumers can learn more by the end of February. That is not surprising since the device appears to be scheduled for release at the company’s Unpacked 5 event on February 24th in conjunction with MWC 2014. Some sources have noted the web page uses an image of a smartphone dunked in water which could be an indication the new Galaxy S5 may be water resistant or even waterproof. source: O2 Ge…

Gionee ready to claim world’s thinnest smartphone title with Elife S5.5
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
A new champ in terms of thinness for smartphones is ready to step into the ring as Gionee’s Elife S5.5 3G model is now available for pre-order in China. An LTE version is expected to be available in June. When the device starts to ship, it will eclipse the Vivo X3 which currently slides in at 5.75mm. For reference, an iPhone 5S is 7.6mm think. Although it is thin, Gionee says the device should be capable of going a whole day on a single charge thanks to a 2300mAh battery. The Elife S5.5 will come equipped with a 5-inch display, a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and Gionee’s own Amigo Android-based operating system. Gionee indicates the device will eventually …

Gox admitted on Friday that it had lost around 750,000 of its customers' Bitcoins along with 100,000 of its own Bitcoins, which the Journal estimates all have a combined worth of $473 million. by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

It really does bear repeating: Many businesses see the iPad as much more than "just a toy." AppleInsider draws our attention to the latest report from mobile enterprise software vendor Good Technology showing that the iPad accounted for 91.4% of all enterprise tablet activations in the fourth quarter of 2013 while Android tablets accounted for just 8.6% of all tablet activations. The industry that seems to like the iPad the most is the financial services industry, which Good says accounted for 46.8% of all iPad activations on the quarter. Other industries that activated a lot of iPads in Q4 included business and professional services (13.9%), manufacturing (9.4%) and gove…

How did Snowden swipe all those NSA documents? The answer is far less thrilling than you think
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

To some, he's a hero. To others, a treasonous saboteur. But of one thing, there is no doubt: former NSA contractor Edward Snowden changed the course of history by leaking a mountain of confidential documents detailing various NSA programs used to covertly monitor communications around the world. Whether or not you agree with what Snowden did, there has always been a bit of curiosity surrounding exactly how the huge NSA breach went down. As it turns out, reality is far less thrilling than you might imagine. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
