Samsung announces the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, Tizen-powered smartwatches
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
That was quick. Right after the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo leaked this morning (and tonight), Samsung has made both smartwatches official in Barcelona. While they look strikingly similar to the original Galaxy Gear, there have been some changes inside and out. But the biggest change is that Android is no longer under the hood. Samsung’s very own Tizen is. What does this mean for device compatibility? Well, Samsung says that it will work with various Galaxy devices right away. Despite not running Android, Samsung has announced CNN, Weather Channel, and Garmin among others have created an app for their Tizen-powered smartwatches. A dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz is running …

by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

Qualcomm Technologies announced the Snapdragon 802 chip targeted at Smart TVs last month during CES 2014. Just over a month later, citing weak demand, the company has announced it is killing off the chip. When announced, Qualcomm noted that the processor was uniquely designed to power Smart TVs running Ultra HD resolutions as well as smart set top boxes. The Snapdragon 802 was powered by a Krait CPU running at 1.8GHz, an Adreno 330 gpu, and came with Qualcomm’s Hollywood Quality Video processing engine on board. Qualcomm also packed in a Hexagon DSP for sound processing duties and hardware for dual-band 802.11ac support. The Snapdragon 802 was not expected to be ava…

Google decides it won’t ruin searches with annoying banner ads
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Good news, everyone: You'll be able to keep searching through Google without the specter of annoying banner ads hanging over you. Marketing Land brings us word that Google search boss Amit Singhal said this week that the Google had cancelled its experimental program to introduce banner ads into searches that it played around with last fall. Under that program, people who searched for company names would be served an enormous banner ad that would be placed at the top of search results. Such giant ads would have run counter to Google’s statement back in 2005 when it said that “there will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages” and that there “wi…

by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Plenty of the apps on our smartphones provide us with entertainment and information, but how many protect us from the dangers of the world around us? As far I know, there aren't many, but the upcoming Android app Audio Aware from the developers at One Llama could do just that. According to MIT Technology Review, Audio Aware will be capable of comprehending noises in the environment that could signal danger, alerting "hard-of-hearing smartphone users and distracted walkers" to an oncoming emergency vehicle or the sound of tires screeching on the pavement. If you happen to be wearing headphones when the background app picks up a distressing noise, it could pause your music …

Even though Samsung is not yet ready to say how much the Galaxy S5 will cost, the company seems extremely interested in convincing as many people as possible to buy the handset by offering them free apps and bonus content. Reports suggest that the South Korean giant wants to price the S5 lower than its predecessor, but carriers and retailers that have the handset up for pre-order suggest the phone will have a regular high-end price. Samsung has listed a variety of “gifts” on its website which amount to $575 in free content, however, suggesting that even priced in line with other flagship phones, the Galaxy S5 will offer owners a tremendous value. The folks over at Fireproof Games are back with another edition of the “The Room” game. New image of HTC Desire 8 suggests announcement next week
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
A few days ago an image leaked of a new HTC device called the HTC Desire 8. The large smartphone is supposed to be HTC’s answer for the mid-range market. Although specs have not yet leaked for the device, it appears to have a 5.5-inch display, a 13MP camera, and will be dual-sim capable. Maybe the most interesting bit gleaned from the leaks so far is that HTC is planning to use on-screen buttons for the new device. A couple new images related to the device surfaced on Chinese site Weibo thanks to none other than HTC’s official account on the service. The first image seems to confirm the HTC Desire 8 name and includes the rendering that was spotted earlier. The second i…

Apple is getting ready to launch a major refresh of its Apple TV set-top box in April but it looks like Amazon is going to steal some of Apple's thunder with a set-top box of its own. Re/code reports that Amazon will unveil its own homemade set-top box in March that will be powered by a forked version of Google's Android operating system that's similar to the one used for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets. Re/code says that most of the details it's heard about the set-top box are widely expected and that it hasn't been able to confirm whether the box will also double as a gaming hub. Amazon has also been rumored to be creating an Android-based gaming console although that seem…
