Disney firmly denies digital theft of Pirates of the Caribbean 5
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Reports a few days ago said that hackers were able to steal a copy of one of Disney’s latest movies, and were holding it for ransom. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, in theaters this Friday, was suspected to be the title in question. Apparently, hackers demanded a huge ransom in order not to release the film online ahead of its theatrical debut. In an interview on Thursday, Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger firmly denied those reports, although he admitted that persons with malicious intentions did try to obtain a large payment from the company. WannaCry could just be the beginning of quick-spreading hack attacks
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
The WannaCry ransomware attack took the world by surprise a few weeks ago, spreading to more than 300,000 computer systems around the world in a matter of hours. The virus, believed to have been created by hackers with ties with North Korea, used a Windows vulnerability that was first devised by the NSA and made public after the agency suffered a digital breach. The US government cautions that a similar attack might be just around the corner, thanks to a different vulnerability. Continue reading... As the world keeps an eye trained on loose canons like North Korea, researchers from Princeton University say the threat from nuclear fallout from within our own borders is something that needs our attention. The researchers teamed up with the Union of Concerned Scientists to issue a warning, calling out the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for using faulty data and skewed analysis to downplay the potential impact of a nuclear disaster in the United States. You can get four of these best-selling home security cameras for the price of one Nest Cam
by Guest Maren Estrada- 0 replies
We love the Nest Cam, we really do. But as great as the quality is and as sleek as the interface is, $169 is a lot of money to spend on one camera. Actually, the Nest Cam is on sale for $165 on Amazon right now but it retails for $199, which is obviously an even more difficult pill to swallow. If you’ve got the means, the Nest Cam is a great option. If you’d rather get a comparable product for less than one-quarter of the cost of a Nest Cam (and that’s the sale price!), check out the YI Home Camera. People can’t stop raving about it, and we definitely recommend checking it out. Here are some key details from the product page: Records in 720p HD to capture clear ima…

This $300 Surface Pro clone might be better than the real thing
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro earlier this week, its fifth-generation tablet that’s no longer sold as a tablet or identified by a number. The Surface Pro is a compelling Windows 10 device though it does have at least one flaw you should be aware of, other than the price structure. Microsoft says that $799 will get you the most versatile laptop out there, but that’s the price you pay for the tablet part only. So if you’re looking for a more affordable Surface Pro alternative, there’s a clone from China that might meet your needs. Continue reading... Donald Trump only has one app on his iPhone, and you’ll never guess what it is
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Actually, that's false. Anyone who's witnessed one of the early-morning presidential tweetstorms will know exactly what Trump has installed. For Trump, Twitter is a gateway to the world that can help him express his views to his supporters. But Twitter isn’t exactly helping him during these perilous times. More often than not, his Twitter remarks have hurt his administration, and that’s why people close to him have been trying to limit his screen time. How much does Trump love Twitter? A new report reveals that it's actually the one and only app installed on his iPhone. Continue reading... Trending right now: T-Mobile is about to make its most exciting new se…

Why the iPhone 8’s $1,000 price tag won’t impact sales one bit
by Guest Yoni Heisler- 0 replies
Over the past few weeks, we've been inundated with somewhat conflicting information regarding how much the iPhone 8 is going to cost. While some analysts anticipate that Apple's next-gen iPhone will cost somewhere in the $870 to $1070 range, other analysts maintain that the entry-level 128GB iPhone 8 will retail for $1,000, with a more storage-friendly 256GB model set to retail for $1,099. As a point of reference, the 128GB iPhone 7 Plus currently sells for $869. No matter how Apple opts to price the iPhone 8, it's a safe bet that the device will easily be the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released. In turn, there has been some chatter that Apple may be doing it…

Working in a Tesla factory isn’t just hard, it’s dangerous
by Guest Chris Mills- 0 replies
A recent report from The Guardian confirmed that working in a Tesla factory is unpleasant. But a new report from Worksafe, a worker safety advocacy group, makes a strong case that Tesla's fancy robotic factory is plain old-fashioned dangerous. Worksafe analyzed the last three years of data from Tesla's OSHA 300 form, a federally-mandated log of workplace accidents. According to its analysis, Tesla's total injury rate was nearly a third higher than industry average, with nearly one in ten workers experiencing an injury in 2016. Continue reading... Samsung insists your Galaxy S8’s iris scanner can’t be hacked in real life
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Security researchers showed that the Galaxy S8’s iris scanner can be easily bypassed with the right tools. After the video had come out, Samsung issued a first response, reassuring customers that it’s aware of the issue, and that it’ll further study the matter. Since then, the company made other official comments on the hack, saying that it’s unlikely for it to work in real life use. Continue reading... Researchers want these robotic turtles to sweep for landmines in war zones
by Guest Mike Wehner- 0 replies

Landmines are extremely hazardous anywhere they're deployed, and oftentimes the dangerous weapons remain buried long after military conflicts are resolved or the front lines are pushed in a different direction. Minesweeping is, as you might expect, an deadly task as well, but researchers from Arizona State University think they might have a solution: turtle robots. Continue reading... Apple designer made a $12,000 hourglass that comes with an iPhone-worthy design story
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Design stories can be pretty silly, and that’s especially true for Samsung’s annoying smartphone design stories — here’s the most recent Galaxy S8 story. But Samsung designers aren’t the only ones that have exaggerated tales about their creations, and we’ve got one more such example for you. This time around, it comes from an Apple designer, although it doesn’t concern an Apple product. Continue reading... The original Apple iPad was the tablet that made tablets cool, launching us into an age where huge touchscreens are the norm and long flights are a bit more bearable because of it. If you're an Apple diehard and, for some reason, an iPad maniac, you can now own one of the rarest Apple tablets on the planet: an internal prototype of the very first iPad. Study finds Apple Watch, Fitbit and Microsoft Band are horrible calorie trackers
by Guest Mike Wehner- 0 replies

It seems like every wearable on the market has some kind of a calorie burn tracker these days, and while we're made to believe the numbers they give us are a good representation of how active we are, it turns out they're not particularly good at it. A new Stanford study put a whole bunch of different fitness bands and smart wearables to the test and found that calorie tracking is a real crapshoot. Continue reading... World’s thinnest iPhone 7 Plus hard case comes in six colors and costs $10 on Amazon
by Guest Maren Estrada- 0 replies
We love the iPhone 7 Plus but as anyone who as ever held one knows all too well, it’s a pretty gigantic phone. It’s also made out of the most slippery aluminum known to man, so you absolutely need a case to protect it from scuffs and scratches. Since the phone is already so large, it’s important to find something nice and thin so that you don’t add even more bulk. If you want something soft, we recommend the Tozo case that everyone knows and loves. If you’d prefer a hard case though, the Humixx Slimshell case is the thinnest hard case on the planet for the iPhone 7 Plus and it comes in six different colors. Here are some key details from the product page: Reinforce…
