http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/fbc881cc833028881c1d4261d97b9d78.png Congratulations, OnePlus: You've managed to create a marketing stunt for your phone that's even worse than HTC's ill-advised $1 billion Robert Downey, Jr. campaign and your own "smash your phone" campaign. OnePlus on Tuesday took the wraps off of a new promotional contest called "Ladies First" that invites female OnePlus fans to "draw a OnePlus logo on a piece of paper or your hand/face/wherever" and then to post it to a thread on OnePlus's website. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/a0608a27563a52f8dc8d87da423b061f.jpg Om One is the name of a new speaker that offers an amazing and rather unexpected feature: Levitation. The Om One is an orb that plays music while floating atop of its base. The device is currently seeking funding on its own website, hoping to raise $100,000. With 49 days left in this self-hosted crowd-funding campaign, the Om One has already convinced 213 backers to pledge almost $37,000 . The Om One speaker costs $179 during this fundraising campaign, or $20 off its future commercial price, and it should ship to backers by Christmas. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/f779a87b1b26988940193db645944fda.jpg Even though rumors detailing an HTC One (M8) Prime phablet were quickly shot down earlier this year, HTC may have such a device in the works after all, TKTechNews has learned. Unsurprisingly, the device will be part of the One Max phablet family, although, unlike its predecessor, the handset should come with high-end specs on board. Gmail will henceforward reject suspicious combinations of Unicode characters that could be misleading for regular users and fool them into clicking on links to sites they think they know, only to end up on a malicious page. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/a025e041c0654e37dbf57076267b0dfb.jpg Just because T-Mobile claimed the top spot in the prepaid market doesn’t mean they’re going to back off on their competitive pricing. The carrier’s newly announced Pay As You Go plans offer extremely low, flat-rate costs for customers that are both extremely cheap and simple to keep up with. You’ll be able to talk and text on T-Mobile’s network for just $0.10 per minute or text message, which is easily the lowest price you’ll find on a prepaid carrier. There’s only a $3 monthly minimum to keep the account active, so there’s no fear of the account closing and having to jump th…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/da1a86170cd1b1aac67f29ab621b0135.jpg Samsung has had tremendous success during the last couple of years, but due to changes in the global smartphone market, Samsung is going to have to “tighten the belt.” Samsung’s operating profit dropped to the lowest point in two years, which is a whopping 25 percent swing. Analysts believe that Samsung will need to starting trimming some of the fat. This could very well likely result in employee cuts. According to industry sources, they could cut 20 percent of its executives. Another area could be travel expenses. Recently, Samsung held meetings with 26 global airlines in an effo…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/c1b1ab5bedb3ee6db2c7037a6261315a.jpg The HTC J Butterfly was recently unveiled Japan with KDDI, but it could be landing in other destinations soon. The Butterfly hasn’t made it’s way out of Japan ever since the first iteration. In fact, it winded up being a Verizon DROID-branded product, the DROID DNA, at that time. Now, however, a leaked press image of the HTC Butterfly 2 seems to indicate it’s destined for Europe and/or the U.S. The HTC Butterfly 2 will be essentially the same phone as the One (M8), but it will be made from plastic. That’s not necessarily a bad thing since it will also be waterproof. Another major cha…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/e2398b63a5cf22f1017292c7d7f58d10.jpg Comcast really, really doesn't like it when you talk about the enormous piles of cash it's burning to jam its proposed merger with Time Warner Cable through the regulatory process. Comcast was not at all happy when we wrote about its decision to invite an attorney at the Department of Justice’s antitrust division to a Winter Olympics kickoff party less than a month before it announced its plan to merge with TWC, for instance. And now Politico reports that Comcast again finds itself in the midst of controversy after it recently revealed that it will be paying $110,000 to sponsor a dinner hono…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/4440982a4e858139273aa45bba522803.jpg Siri was incredibly cool when it first came on the iPhone 4s out back in 2011 but times have changed and our expectations are much higher for what a digital personal assistant can do for us. Wired has a huge in-depth new report on a startup called Viv Labs, which was cofounded by three engineers who originally worked on Siri and who are now building a "radical new AI" that will make Siri look positively primitive by comparison. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/3f933edb69daa1e4752fa3ba734a5ba2.jpg Facebook has recently decided to force all its mobile users to install its Facebook Messenger application for messaging purposes rather than letting them chat via the official Facebook mobile app. The move wasn’t received well at all by Facebook users and Android users in particular have been wondering why the Messenger app needs so much access to various phone resources in order to offer messaging features. To put their concerns to rest, Facebook explained on a new support page why Messenger needs so many permissions. Continue reading... http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/c8a…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/3a0e41de133b4930fa456ca50ff5a785.jpg The month of September is shaping up to be a big one for Motorola (and maybe some others). The Moto X+1, Moto 360, and Moto G2 are all expected in September. The first two are expected at the tail end of the month, but the Moto G2 could be coming much earlier. Through a retailer that received information from a Motorola representative, GSMArena is reporting that the Moto G2 will ship on September 20. Select retailers will receive units even before August ends, but they are likely being told to hold them for one big release date. Overseas, the price is said to be €250 (or $334). The i…

Gartner says by 2017 those numbers will triple to 14.4 million units. Meanwhile, Gartner says buyer demographics are changing. As recently as 2013, the vast majority of Chromebooks were being purchased in the education sector that accounted for 85 percent of sales. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/d239b6160e5fe0027bf9f63615efd44b.png NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 has been making some noise lately while being featured in the Shield Tablet and Acer’s new Chromebook 13, but it’s so yesterday since it’s only 32-bit. Today, NVIDIA announced the 64-bit version at the Hot Chips Conference, which makes it the world’s first 64-bit ARM processor for Android. This chip sports the same 192-core Keplar architecture-based GPU, but it’s paired with NVIDIA’s own 64-bit, dual core “Project Denver” CPU. It’s fully ARMv8 architecture compatible and it’s pin compatible with the 32-bit Tegra K1, which should allow it to hit devices sooner rather…

We reported on a plastic surgeon using Glass with patients last time, and this time we have a doctor in Kansas City who is using Glass to complement computer monitors in the operating room. During facial reconstruction surgeries, Dr. Jeff Colyer wears Glass to view x-ray images without having to look up at the monitors that would typically display the images. By doing this, he is able to see exactly what he’s working on without having to look away from the patient. …

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/fb91b75eba81808ec9bd534ad9d77e35.jpg We think sometime this week Samsung is going to officially take the wraps off their new Samsung Galaxy Alpha smartphone, their attempt at producing a metal-bodied device. Over the weekend images surfaced showing Samsung was involved in a Russian yachting event that included some significant Galaxy Alpha advertising materials. Signage and banners were present and it even appears Samsung paid to have the event name include their latest device. At least one of the photos shows some of the attendees posing with what is presumably the Galaxy Alpha. Although Samsung seems to be testing the w…
