http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/25eb31a1d723d925ceb8b5516fc44f95.png A lot of people we talk with who only follow consumer electronics news are always surprised to learn that Microsoft is still a gigantically profitable company. After all, they reckon, Windows 8 is hugely polarizing, Windows Phone is nowhere, the Surface is a money-losing flop and even the Xbox One has been running a distant second in console sales compared to Sony's PlayStation 4. Given all these high-profile stumbles, it is fair to ask: Just why isn't Microsoft falling apart at the seams? Windows Phone Central has obtained photos of what appears to be the Lumia 730, or the 'selfie' phone, which is reportedly going to be the follow-up to last year's Lumia 720. It has been said that the standout feature of the new phone will be its 5-megapixel front-facing camera for taking some of the highest quality selfies on any Windows Phone device to date. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/e2d2f52bd444c01483a5e4d040f84850.jpg Nintendo has survived as long as it has, through thick and thin, on the strength of its characters — a group of plumbers, princesses, puffballs and emotive animals who have persisted from console generation to console generation since the 1980s. In all this time, you think we'd know all there was to know about Mario and his friends, but the Mushroom Kingdom holds many secrets, as Console Wars author Blake J. Harris has recently uncovered. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/95726e0d31ab1878e271bdbd29b406cc.png EA shocked everyone last week with the introduction of EA Access, a subscription service for Xbox One that offers discounts on EA games, early access to unreleased titles and a selection of free games for members. It all seemed to good to be true, especially coming from the company that unleashed the nightmarish Dungeon Keeper and the similarly awful Sim City relaunch onto the world, but as EA shares more details about the new service, it just keeps sounding better. For those who don’t know, sapphire displays have made waves in the media for their strength and ability to take a beating. The company is also looking to expand its E-commerce business in hopes of opening new channels for that avenue. That aside, the company will increase brand awareness but rather than…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/ff43f1593b9e4917c02fea2326ce18b7.pngIt appears that Sony Mobile is looking to add a new Xperia tablet to the family, following a post on an Indonesian site showing a new tablet with a model number of SGP621. The model number suggests that the tablet will sport LTE and continue the line of Xperia Z tablets with the LTE Z2 and the Tablet Z sporting model numbers of SGP521 and SGP321 respectively. Other rumors have Sony readying a smaller tablet and this could possibly be that said tablet. Given the timing of the post, there’s a chance that we’ll see the device debut at IFA this year. The conference starts on Wednesday, Sept. …

The update really only adds one new feature, the ability for someone who has found a smartphone with the ability to call the owner. The lockscreen implemented with this change will display a big green button for the finder to use to “Call Owner.” The number to be called, as well as a personal message that can be configured to display on the lockscreen, can be configured by the smartphone owner ahead of time. This can be done on the device or via the web interface. At…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/d9bd00464c788b87856818cd9162a6d6.jpg Although AT&T is still probably T-Mobile's favorite target, the scrappy "Uncarrier" also can't resist taking shots at rival Sprint, particularly after Sprint unleashed its widely panned "Framily" ad campaign onto the world. And on Thursday, T-Mobile found a brand-new way to beat up its dilapidated rival: By crowing that it now boasted more prepaid wireless subscribers than its former would-be merger partner. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/4d4f8d76bc3c803e427322225edaba71.png When Apple first introduced the front-facing camera on the iPhone, it attempted to do so as elegantly as possible, but one patent hints at a future hardware revision which could hide the camera from view entirely. First noticed by AppleInsider, a patent published on Thursday for an "Electronic Device With Camera Flash Structures" seems to indicate that Apple might place the FaceTime camera inside the speaker port at the top of the phone and add a camera flash. Hours after Claure was officially announced as Sprint's new CEO, T-Mobile CEO John Legere decided to greet him using the same tactics that he's used to become close friends with Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. The company is said to have placed iPhone 6 orders amounting to 80 million units for 2014, which would make the iPhone 6’s launch the biggest in Apple history so far. A new report from Digitimes seems to indicate that the iPhone maker plans to sell a large number of handsets in the second half of the year, as the Taiwanese publication reveals that Apple suppliers in the region are doing quite well financially. Motorola has you covered with a great sale on Moto Maker where you’ll be able to pick up an off-contract Moto X for $299. That’s just the 16 GB, but if you need more space, the 32 GB is only $324 and the 64 GB is $374. This deal will run through tomorrow, and you’ll still get all of the great customization options that Moto Maker offers. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/fe6eb3aabdca9f5f6fca2abe7c2072e1.jpg Google is pushing out updates to a few of its apps, including Hangouts, YouTube, and Play Music. None of the updates are huge, but they bring a few extra features that are definitely worth having. Hangouts is the most minor update of the three, bringing no noticeable changes in features. This one is likely just a bugfix update, so your app should crash less, perform better, etc. Nothing to get overly excited about. The YouTube update brings some small changes, including a View All button in the slide out menu that takes you to all of your YouTube playlists, and playlist…

Google Search updated to version 3.6 with new app deep linking and hints of a hands free mode

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/04a6db676b76f0ee2a83b870a7726a0c.png Google is pushing out an update to Google Search, bringing the app to version 3.6. This is a really minor update with the only visible change being the ability for developers to deep link app information through Android’s linking API. This basically means you’ll be able to be linked directly to content in another app, if you have it installed and the developer has implemented it within their own application. Aside from the deep linking stuff, there are more hints of the hands free mode that Google is rumored to be working on. Activating hands free mode still doesn’t work wit…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/e67b34a43b8e6b2a249bfcc49e20b4cd.jpg Google latest acquisition is the instant messaging company, Emu, that left beta status earlier this year. Emu set itself apart from other messaging services by allowing users to use voice controls to do things like set calendar appointments and other tasks, not unlike a Google Now or Siri. Not only that, but Emu used contextual information from the conversations you were having to make recommendations on things like restaurants or places of interest that you might enjoy. With all of the nifty information-aware stuff that Emu did, it’s no surprise that Google wanted the compa…

Apple and Samsung, the two leaders, are the only of the top five manufacturers to see growth. LG, Motorola, and HTC all saw very small changes that went south; however, none of the declines were more than -0.6%. Also, those three companies combined have yet to near Samsung’s 28.6% market share in the United States. On the overall software front, Android still leads iOS by an amount nearing 10%. Ever since Apple launched the iPad in 2010, schools all over the country have experimented with placing them in classrooms or giving them to students to bring home with them. The Atlantic reports that although many institutions were initially satisfied with the results, many are now beginning to see the potential upshot of affordable laptops over expensive tablets.
