Google talks developer tools during keynote session
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
During Google’s keynote session that got Google I/O 2014 off to a roaring start, the attention grabbing news for many people was the preview of the L Developer Edition or the release of new wearable devices or maybe even the announcement of Android Auto. For developers though, some key bits of information came later during the session when Google introduced some new tools that would help those developers generate a positive revenue stream. Speaking of that, Google indicated developers have been paid over $5 Billion since last year’s Google I/O, which was 2.5 times the amount from the prior year. One of the “tools” Google is making available for developers is actually a…

Google Search gets system-wide hotword detection and audio history in latest update
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Google talked a lot about using Google Now in different products at their keynote earlier today, but they didn’t mention the newest update to Google Search that’s rolling out on Android devices. The latest update ramps up the capabilities of the “OK Google” hotword detection by setting it up to work anywhere on your phone instead of just on the home screen or in the search app. Now you’ll be able to tell Google to do anything from your text messages app, Angry Birds, or anywhere else on your device. There were some rumors that this would be coming to Search earlier this year, and it’s finally been implemented. Aside from the better hotword recognition, there’s also …

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

To actually allow your device to work with a good portion of today’s announcements, an update to Google Play Services is required. This is what runs quietly in the background, ensuring your Android can be updated as quickly as possible. For many users, they may never notice Google Play Services. We do and probably you too. The main additions include Android Wear support, Play Games services, and updates on the back-end to Google Cast, Drive, and Wallet. The 5.0 update will rollout to everyone over the course of the next few days. The announcement of Android L this afternoon opened some eyes as it is quite an ambitious update to the Android operating system. The obvious…

by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

Today at Google I/O, one of the major takeaways from the event was that Google wants to bring Android to every screen you own. Android is already prominent on smartphones and tablets, but there’s plenty of room to grow. Google announced Android TV for your television, Android wear for your wrist, and Android Auto for your car. To show all of this in action, Google has released a short clip demonstrating Android on every major screen you see during the day. It’s only about 2 minutes long and really is a great way to see Google’s vision for Android in the near future. You can check it out after the break, and view the rest of our I/O 2014 coverage here. Late summer and early fall this year are going to be huge for Apple. After months without any new products, the company is expected to launch a flurry of new devices beginning with two completely redesigned iPhone 6 models, one with a 4.7-inch display and one with an even bigger 5.5-inch screen. Also expected are a new 12-inch Retina MacBook Air, a new Apple TV, an iWatch, a refreshed iPad mini and a sixth-generation full-size iPad, currently referred to as the "iPad Air 2." Now, a mockup believed to be an accurate representation of Apple's next-gen iPad Air has been shown on video and compared to the current iPad Air model. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy …

Our society’s view on commuting (and telecommuting) is still painfully warped
by Guest Darren Murph- 0 replies

A Google employee peers down at an Android Wear , and notices that — based on real-time traffic information — it would take him 55 minutes to get to work. “Commute’s not looking too bad!,” he exclaims, before swiping to the next card on the demo. How severely damaged must our society’s state of mind be to make such a comment? Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Google’s major hardware mystery

I was pretty excited for Google I/O coming into Wednesday but after watching the company's rambling keynote presentation that never seemed to end, I have to admit I'm confused. Or rather, it's Google that seems confused, or at the very least going through a transition of some kind. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Messaging mania has shocked tech leaders twice – in 1994 and again now
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies
One of the most unanticipated developments surrounding mobile phones is the fact that people don't really want to use them to talk to each other. They want to use them to send messages. This phenomenon was so counterintuitive that it has now disrupted the entire tech industry twice — first in 1994 and later in 2012. It was messaging that turned Nokia into king of the mobile phone market in 1990s and then WhatsApp into one of the most successful startups in the history as Facebook was forced to pay $19 billion for a tiny company that was just five years old. The astonishing popularity of text-messaging on phones has now blindsided two generations of tech leaders. It goe…

Now that the full features of Android Wear have been officially unveiled at Google I/O 2014, Google thought it was time to let us know when some of the first Android Wear devices will be available to the public. And you won’t have to wait — at all. We thought the LG G Watch would be the first wearable with Android Wear loaded up on it — we weren’t wrong, but it appears it’ll be joined by another device, the Samsung Gear Live. Today. Yes, today. You’ll be able to purchase both devices on the Play Store in just a bit. While pricing is not yet known, we do know that these Android Wear devices will help ring in a new type of consumer electronics, hopefully for the …

by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

Google has finally taken the wraps off of what’s new in their Android L preview. You’ll see a new Material Design language that they’ve been hinting at with app releases over the past few weeks and other under-the-hood tweaks, including better graphics and battery performance, security enhancements, and ART becoming the standard runtime moving forward. This new preview comes with 5,000 new APIs for developers, full 64-bit support, and some new tools for web developers, to boot. The new Material Design takes some cues from Google Now’s card aesthetics, but goes a bit further with great new animations and fluidity. Some major components of the new design include eleva…

Google shared new information and a demonstration of their new Android Auto framework intended to bring the power of Android to motor vehicles. Besides putting Android, and by extension Google services, in front of even more people, the new Android Auto initiative is part of an effort to improve safety by making it easier for users to access information and services without resorting to looking at their smartphones. For the demonstration, Google showed an auto interior where the user has connected their Android powered smartphone to an auto that has Android Auto loaded up. Once connected, users will be able to access all of the information on their smartphones via an i…

Android Wear gets detailed, full SDK available today
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Android Wear has finally been demoed in front of a live audience. With people checking their phones 125 times per day according to Google, a quicker solution is vital. Google is delivering a powerful platform that works right on your wrist or, later, in other form factors. The platform features multiple watch faces when users press and hold on the display. This allows for familiarity with Android by providing some personalization rather than having all users remain the same. Android Wear even acts like Google Now by dismissing cards left or right with a swiping gesture. Android Wear works directly with other Android devices to sync and keep everything update…

Chromecast to receive major update
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

Google revealed at Google I/O 2014 today that their Chromecast devices will be getting a major update over the coming months. The new features come on the heels of a 40% increase in usage and an explosion in the number of apps, now numbering at least 6,000 which can be discovered via chromecast.com/apps. One of the big changes that owners of Chromecast devices will notice is the ability to cast without being on the same WiFi network. To accomplish this, authentication will now be handled out in the cloud. Users will still be able to control who is allowed to connect in this manner. This new feature will rollout later this summer. Once a Chromecast is fired up and displ…

This is hands down the craziest Google rumor we’ve ever heard
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

It's always smart to expect the unexpected with Google, but a new report from Seth Weintraub at 9to5Google is the most unexpected Google I/O rumor we've ever heard. One of Weintraub's sources, who apparently tipped him off to Google's Glass skydiving stunt two years ago, says that there's a chance that Google will take the wraps off of "some cutting-edge micro bots that can detect things like certain kinds of cancer" at I/O this year, although the source cautions that these nanobots are at least two years away from being ready to launch onto the market.
