Jeff Bezos gives insight behind the Fire Phone, admits to having used a Samsung smartphone
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
As to whether or not Amazon needed to make a smartphone of its own, that is for CEO Jeff Bezos to decide. In an interview with Bits, Bezos explains why Amazon opted to manufacturer its own smartphone and enter into a crowded, cutthroat market. He wanted to produce a device that was differentiated from today’s offerings, but wanted differentiation that mattered. When pushed on the fact that the company may have waited to long, Bezos said “I don’t want to judge before all the facts are in, but I think this wireless thing is going to be big.” He then recalls five years ago when Nokia and BlackBerry were massive players in the wireless industry. Bezos clearly shows no sign…

Deezer gets Chromecast support
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
As of right now, you count on one hand how many music apps that support the Chromecast. Why? We don’t know, but there is a new one on the block and that is Deezer. What’s unique about this one is the implementation. Multiple Deezer users will be able to control the app on one TV simultaneously, so friends can collaborate on a playlist. This is exactly what we have been waiting for. Hopefully Play Music will implement something similar. Now the bad news!! You will need to be a subscriber to Deezer Premium+, but they are offering a special right now. The normal cost is £9.99 per month, but you can get it for £4.99 per month. The update that includes this Chromecast sup…

Nokia X2 from Microsoft with Android announced today
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Nokia, recently purchased by Microsoft, has announced the Nokia X2 smartphone, a successor to their Android powered Nokia X. Like the older version, the Nokia X2 is aimed at the lower end of the market as a budget smartphone, so the differences in this newer version are not major. In terms of hardware, the screen has grown slightly to 4.3-inches, RAM has been pushed up to 1GB, and the processor is just a little bit faster at 1.2GHz. The Nokia X2 comes with 4GB of memory on board with up to 32GB additional space available via microSD. Nothing earth-shattering there, but this should help improve the overall experience a little bit. Nokia also added a Home button to the d…

New leak reveals Motorola Victara coming to Verizon
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Yesterday a press render leaked that was believed to show an encased Motorola Moto X+1. A new image has leaked today that appears to show the same device headed for Verizon, but going by the name Motorola Victara. In the past we learned that the codename for the Moto X+1 was “Victara” or at least that is what was believed. This newest image is part of an ad for a Verizon accessory, a case to be specific, for the Motorola Victara. As was noted in yesterday’s leaked image, this new device that is surfacing does not appear to have a front facing camera which makes it unlikely for a flagship device. However, the dimensions for the case are listed at 5.25-inches by 2.77-in…

Building an arsenal: Samsung filed 3 times more smartphone patents than Apple in 2013
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Samsung has apparently had enough of being bullied by Apple in the global smartphone patent war, and it has no intentions of taking the matter sitting down. According to Thomson Reuters' 2014 State of Innovation Report, Samsung filed a whopping 2,179 smartphone patents last year, including 1,362 related to semiconductor materials and processes. That staggering figure is more than three times the 647 mobile telephony patents Apple filed in 2013. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

The publication has learned from people familiar with the matter that the two iPhone 6 models will have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, and could both be released in September. Continue reading... One of the best free Android launchers on the planet is now available to everyone
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Back in mid-February — on Valentine's Day, in fact — I included Aviate in a collection of 5 great Android apps that can do amazing things the iPhone cannot. The app was using a queue system for new users, and it often took more than a week for new accounts to be activated. Receiving an invite from an existing Aviate user would bypass the queue and give users instant access, and I mentioned in my coverage that I had a few invites left. Four months later, people still contact me almost every day looking for invites — that's how hot Aviate is among Android users. And now, Yahoo-owned Aviate has finally opened up the app so that anyone can begin using it as soon as they do…

HTC takes a shot at Galaxy S 5′s Band-Aid design
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
If you thought companies were done slamming Samsung over the Galaxy S 5′s design, you don’t have to look any farther than HTC’s latest tweeted image. The graphic shows three Band-Aids that just so happen to share the colors of Samsung’s latest flagship, followed by the sleek HTC One. The image was captioned “One of these things is not like the other.” HTC isn’t the first company to attack Samsung, and they certainly won’t be the last. None of HTC’s recent marketing tactics have put too much of a dent in the smartphone market, but that isn’t going to stop them from trying. source: HTC Come comment on this article: HTC takes a shot at Galaxy S 5′s Band-Ai…

Is there an industry Google will not get involved with? Say hello to Google Domains. This one makes sense, though, considering Google is a internet and search powerhouse. Right now Google Domains is in invite-only beta; however, you can request an invitation very quickly. As to what nets you an invite, we are not quite sure just yet. No additional cost for private registration, branded emails for the domain, domain forwarding, sub-domains, Google’s infrastructure, easy domain management, integration with site builder…

Verizon cuts off free data for Chromebook Pixel (LTE) owners one year early
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Nothing quite like a broken promise. When the Chromebook Pixel with LTE launched, with a mighty $1450 price tag, buyers were given two years data at 100MB per month with Verizon for free. If more data was needed, the buyer could just buy more. But just one year later, Verizon has pulled the plug on this free data. The only option left is to pay for any and all data used. Verizon is telling owners of the Chromebook Pixel with LTE that the data was free for one year, not two. After some digging around, JR Raphael of Computerworld found that a Google press release that remains posted actually says that the free data is for three years. Not even the expected two! Now both …

OnLive is now working with WikiPad to bring cloud based PC games playable via WikiPad. OnLive is a cloud gaming service that allows users to play games by streaming them to compatible devices, and they have already brought the same games to a number of other controllers. Users of OnLive can play games in two different ways. Microsoft’s OneDrive is now one of the best cloud storage bargains
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
As cloud storage services become increasingly competitive, users will reap the benefits. Microsoft announced on Monday that OneDrive's free storage will be growing from 7GB to 15GB for individuals. This puts OneDrive on par with Google Drive in terms of free storage capacity. Even better, Office 365 subscribers will receive a far more substantial upgrade from Microsoft, boosting their storage from 20GB to 1TB. This comes shortly after business customers were bumped up to 1TB of storage in April. If you need more space for your files but don't want to subscribe to Office 365, monthly storage prices have gone down to $1.99 for 100 GB (previously $7.49), and $3.99 for 200 GB…

‘Heads Up’ notification mode from Android added to CyanogenMod
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
The CyanogenMod team has added a new feature to its latest nightly build, and it’s a feature that’s been hidden inside the code of stock Android for some time now. It’s called “Heads Up,” and its a notification mode that allows users to interact with floating alerts that are overlaid over what users are doing. Google hasn’t yet activated the system in stock Android, but many users think it’s much more useful than Android’s default alert system. Basically, there’s a little box that’s displayed at the top of the screen above whatever you’re doing. We don’t know why Google has not activated Heads Up, or even if it ever will be activated. To download and install the l…

Alleged encased Motorola Moto X+1 press render leaks
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
So far we have only seen very sketchy leaks involving the Moto X+1. Now, though, we have a clear pictured of the alleged upcoming Motorola flagship. The image above was posted earlier this evening and shows the handset within a rubber case. So what are some noteworthy things about this? It certainly seems that front-facing speakers will be utilized, much like HTC, since there is no cutout on this case for speakers on the rear. There are only three cutouts and two of them, not the massive camera slot, are likely for microphones. What is also interesting is the lack of transparent status/notification bars and the same goes for the navigation keys. This is typically what …

Samsung may post a weak Q2 due to slower device sales
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
It looks like Samsung’s Q2 earnings may not be quite as great as the company originally anticipated. Early reports are saying that Samsung’s market share and device sales have dipped a considerable amount thanks to heated competition from other manufacturers like Apple and LG. Samsung’s market share in the smartphone market is predicted to drop to about 30 percent, and operating profits are expected to be around $7.74 billion. Those are still very impressive numbers, but for a company that’s on top like Samsung, shareholders want things to continually improve, not stagnate. Samsung has reportedly sold about 15 million Galaxy S 5 smartphones, down from the originally…

Google Play Games service getting improvements, including quest notifications and snapshots
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Google’s gaming service, Google Play Games, is going to be getting a few improvements in the near future that should help developers bake more functionality in their games. Currently, the Play Games service manages things like achievements and leaderboards, but Google is working on more improvements to the system. The first major improvement is the addition of notifications for quests in a game. These notifications would alert the player whenever a game had available quests, send notifications letting them know a quest started, and send a heads up when the quest was completed. Not a huge addition, but a nice visual feedback tweak that should improve the way games pl…

Sprint finds itself a step behind T-Mobile… again
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

There are times when you have to wonder whether Sprint chairman Masayoshi Son doesn't wish that he just bought T-Mobile and left Sprint to its own devices. Sprint on Monday announced that it's once again going to follow one of T-Mobile's latest "Uncarrier" initiatives by offering a 30-day trial to new customers who are interested in trying its service starting on June 27th. To be fair, this free trial is much longer than the 7-day trial that T-Mobile is offering, but given that Sprint made this announcement one week after T-Mobile first launched its own Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
