Hilarious: John Oliver now wants FCC Chairman to prove he’s not a dingo
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
A few weeks ago, John Oliver’s net neutrality appeal during his HBO show went viral, convincing many Internet users to leave comments with the FCC about the its controversial proposal that would allow for Internet "fast lanes." In Oliver's original smackdown of the FCC, he said that having Wheeler run the Federal Communications Commission despite working previously as a cable company lobbyist was "the equivalent of needing a babysitter and hiring a dingo." Meanwhile,, on Friday Wheeler was asked whether he had heard Oliver’s remarks, and the chairman actually made a point of denying that he is a dingo. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

The single biggest reason Apple is still in a class of its own
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Apple haters may not want to admit it but Apple's business model is working out very well, and not just because it's helping Apple continue to post sky-high profits — it's also helping the company keep its customers fanatically loyal to the brand. The biggest reason Apple is able to do this, writes John Gruber, is that it controls every single aspect of its products, from the hardware to the software. Continue reading... iPhone and PS3 jailbreak extraordinaire releases new Android root app
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

iPhone and PlayStation 3 owners who looked for ways to jailbreak either device in the past probably know who Geohot is, and should be happy to hear he is still hacking devices. Geohot on Sunday released his own root tool on xda-developers that works on many Android handsets, including the Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S5 versions, which were harder to crack, at least so far. This might be Apple’s best bet for getting you hooked on Beats Music
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple is very late to the party when it comes to offering a music streaming service that's capable of taking on Spotify. However, Apple does have one advantage over Spotify that could really help it catch up in terms of subscriber numbers: It's got a ton of cash that it can throw at artists to produce exclusive content. Per The Verge, Beats Music this week is offering an exclusive remix of X Ambassadors and Jamie N Commons' hit song "Jungle" that features a guest appearance by Jay-Z. Continue reading... Galaxy Note 4 will definitely sport a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Now that Samsung’s Galaxy Premier event is over, it’s now time to pay a little attention to the upcoming Galaxy Note 4. With each edition of the Note, Samsung has increased the display size, but will they do that again with the Note 4? The answer appears to be no based on the fact that the AT&T version (SM-N910A) showed up in India for testing with a 5.7-inch display, the same size as the Note 3. However, it’s not all about the size right? This time around, the resolution is going to be much better. Previous reports pegged the resolution to be QHD (2560 x 1440), and that is now confirmed, thanks to a user agent profile on Samsung’s own site. The original Note …

How to get a OnePlus One without an invite
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
I have yet to play with a OnePlus One, but it seems like a lot of phone for $299. I know a lot of you agree as you hope and pray for an invite so you can just hand them your money. Based on the fact that production is limited, your chances of getting that coveted invite are slim, but there is another way to grab one. Yes, there are a couple of caveats like that it will cost you a little more, but not a whole lot more. Online retailer Oppomart.com actually has the OnePlus One in stock right now with the “Add to Cart” option just waiting for your click. Now like I said, there are a couple of caveats, but not too bad if you really want this phone. The first is that it w…

Samsung Galaxy S 5 with LTE-A headed to Korea in July
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Samsung is doing what Samsung does best and that is to offer more variants than anyone can keep track of. The latest is going to be an LTE-A (Advanced) version of the Galaxy S 5, which would be destined for only Korea. Now, unlike the report we saw over the weekend that LG has a G3 variant with a Snapdragon 805, this variant will most likely sport the 801, which is in the current GS5. Since LTE-A speeds can hit 225Mbps, it was believed that this phone might get the 805 wince the 801 can’t support anything higher than 150Mbps. However, SK Telecom has just confirmed that the device will be just like the present Galaxy S 5 in every way other than having LTE-A. The ph…

Chinese government discloses long list of patents Microsoft leverages over Android...
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

It’s no secret that Microsoft owns quite a few patents that they license out to anyone wanting to make an Android device. Microsoft has revealed a handful of these patents since they’ve begun filing lawsuits, but there’s no definitive list of just how many patents Microsoft uses in licensing negotiations. However, a Chinese government agency has cleared up some of the mystery surrounding Microsoft’s patent portfolio by publishing a very comprehensive list of 310 patents thanks to a Chinese antitrust review that Microsoft was going through. The list describes patents ranging from Microsoft’s in-house developments, as well as patents they acquired through the Rocksta…

Now, a handful of pictures coming from the Chinese social network “Weibo” shows the design of the device along with more specs. It sports a metal frame along with a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, right below where the camera is located. In addition, the source indicates that it sports a 5 inch full HD display powered by an 8-core Kirin 920 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz, 3GB of RAM, 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera. by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Microsoft's return to the mobile space following the epic downfall of Windows Mobile has been slow going so far. In fact, the company's Windows Phone operating system was first unveiled four years ago now, and Microsoft's share of the global smartphone market still sits in the low single digits. But despite the company's struggles to regain its footing in mobile, Microsoft continues to make billions from the smartphone and tablet markets. How? By using a list of patents it claims have been infringed by Android to pressure smartphone makers into licensing deals. And now, for the first time, that secret list is no longer a secret. From BlackBerry clone to iPhone clone to innovator: A visual history of Android
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

When the Android mobile operating system was first unveiled back in 2007, it was a sad-looking ripoff of the BlackBerry operating system. But when Apple launched the iPhone that year, Google immediately realised that it had seen the future of smartphones and it quickly went back to work in an effort to make its new mobile software more like the software on the iPhone. Fast-forward to 2014, and Google is the clear leader in terms of global market share, and its mobile software has grown by leaps and bounds. In fact, the tables have turned and it is now Apple that is copying features from Android with each new iOS update. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius R…

The most secure version of BBM ever is now available
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
BBM is still a hugely popular messaging app and now there's a new version of it that promises to be the most secure mobile messaging platform in the world. BlackBerry on Monday announced the availability of BBM Protected, which functions just as BBM does except it now has an added layer of encryption in the form of a unique encryption key that's shared exclusively between a message's sender and its recipient. Even more impressively, BlackBerry says that "each message uses a new random symmetric key for message encryption," so even if one key gets compromised it doesn't mean all your messages will also be exposed. T-Mobile Galaxy Avant may come preloaded with carrier-unlocking app
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
We’ve seen a few leaks of T-Mobile’s new Samsung Galaxy Avant, but it looks like it may play a role in the Uncarrier 5.0 event coming up. We know T-Mobile plans on simplifying carrier pricing, but they may begin pushing for an easy way to unlock devices, too. According to someone with an early Galaxy Avant unit, the device comes with an application from T-Mobile that puts the device through a carrier-unlocking process, then disappears on the next reboot. The tester tried out a Verizon sim card in the Avant, and it worked without a hitch. To top off the rumors, T-Mobile’s customer care are no longer taking unlock requests for devices. Funny coincidence, right? …

Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S 5 finally get root method
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Verizon and AT&T did an excellent job of locking down their version of the Galaxy S 5, preventing any type of root exploit on the device for several months after release. Tons of people put up money for a bounty to get their Galaxy S 5 unlocked, topping out at around $18,000, and today developer Geohot from XDA gets to claim that bounty. Geohot, known for tons of jailbreak exploits on Apple devices and the PS3, found a vulnerability in the Linux kernel that Android is based on to achieve root access on the GS 5. As a side effect to that exploit, the root method should work on most newer Android devices, including the previously unrootable Galaxy Note 3 and plent…

Here are the top functions and apps available on Android that are NOT on iOS
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies

Because there are so many different Android devices (and so many variants of those individual devices), developers tend to begin programming their apps on iOS before putting together the resources (and endless hours) to begin porting their creations to Android. Developing for Android is an arduous task, and Google knows it. That’s why the company will soon be making a concerted effort to streamline the development process. Google has also pushed manufacturers/carriers to stay as close to stock Android as possible by criticizing bloatware and OEM custom skins. But with different phones running different processors, having different amounts of RAM, different screen sizes…

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Experiencing problems with the Android 4.4.3 update on your Nexus device? You are not alone. While just about every Nexus device with the update is being affected by bugs, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 have apparently been hit the hardest. Issues being reported included WiFi connection drops and lagging within the Dialer app. The Nexus 4′s rebooting issue has even returned despite supposedly being fixed with the update. The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are also experiencing issues in the form of battery life and notification woes. Hopefully Google moves quickly and releases a patch or promises some changes with the next version of Android. That could be a long wait, though, as Googl…
