YouTube app now includes 480p and 1080p streaming quality options
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Need to boost your streaming quality when using the YouTube application? Or even lower the streaming quality? Now you can. The YouTube app now lets you choose exactly what resolution to stream content in. From the start, all devices are set to ‘Auto’ with other options sitting behind the scenes (or the cog within the app). There were a few options already but it topped out at 720p. YouTube has raised the maximum to 1080p and added a low 480p as an additional option. The new streaming quality options do not seem to be through an update in the Play Store. Instead, it could be something YouTube hit the switch on. If it is from an update, we have the download links after t…

Twitter may be changing appearance of linked tweets
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Reports have surfaced indicating Twitter may be in the process of either testing or rolling out a new method for displaying embedded tweets in your timeline on mobile devices, including Android powered devices. Apparently when linking to another tweet, the mobile interface will display a linked tweet in its entirety with the posters name, Twitter handle and avatar. It is unclear how Twitter would use this feature, although it would appear to eliminate the need to manually retweet items to add your thoughts. If just retweeting something with no additional comment, followers would apparently see more information about the account you are retweeting. Twitter has not co…

T-Mobile’s Un-carrier 5.0 strategy to entail simplified, tax-included pricing
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Everyone hates taxes. They are just about everywhere and the consumer has to always take into account this extra expense. And more often than not, taxes still surprise the consumer when making a purchase. With T-Mobile’s next Un-carrier 5.0 phase, that is all going to change. At the June 18 event, which moved from Los Angeles to Seattle, T-Mobile is going to be unveiling simplified pricing. The carrier is going to be altering all post-paid customers bills to represent a price that includes all taxes and fees. Carrier bills are a complete mess right now and T-Mobile is aiming to clean it up. Source: Phone Arena Come comment on this article: T-Mobile’s Un-carrier…

LG G Watch with built-in SIM card slot possibly being released only in Korea
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
At the end of last month, a report appeared that made it seem like the LG G Watch would have a cellular connection thanks to a built-in SIM card slot. And a few weeks ago we the leaked G Watch system dump highlighted a cellular connection option. In the United States, though, you may have to keep waiting to get your hands on a smartwatch with its own data connection. Instead, it now seems that the LG smartwatch with a cellular connection, LG-W105S, will be heading to Korea only. This one never came up in an FCC filing; therefore, it does not look like the United States will have the G Watch with a built-in SIM card slot. Source: Naver, RRA Via: 9to5Google Come co…

Google Play Fitness to be backed by Play Services, organizes fitness data in one place
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
With Apple unveiling HealthKit at WWDC a few weeks ago, Google is readying a fitness solution of its own to introduce at Google I/O at the end of this month. We recently heard about Google Fit, a place for an organized pool of data regarding your health. It will actually be called Google Play Fitness, according to Android Police. Like Google Play Games, it will be backed by Google Play Service. This would ensure deep integration with your entire Google profile while running in the background from its syncing within Google Play Services. Google Play Fitness would not be a very bold, in-your-face app. It would sit in the background and quietly collect all our your fitnes…

Sprint could disappear after merging with T-Mobile, pay $2 billion if deal falls through
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The merger between Sprint and T-Mobile could leave us with only one of the two brands existing. Who will it be? According to CNBC’s David Faber, T-Mobile and its name will be left standing. The Sprint brand, however, would disappear with John Legere’s beast leading the way. In fact, Faber confirmed a that John Legere would remain in charge of the merged company. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has already made it clear he has no problem fading away. The rising success of T-Mobile would be the reason for sticking around. Within the last few years, Sprint has gained negative press for its poor network and high costs. T-Mobile, as we all know, is all about calling out competitors and s…

Samsung to update Galaxy S 5 to Android 4.4.3 this month, Galaxy S 4 next month
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Last month, Samsung was in the ‘integrating’ phase of pushing Android 4.4.3 to the Galaxy S 5 and Galaxy S 4. An alleged status report from June 10 shows that testing has been completed for the Galaxy S 5. The Galaxy S 4, though, is still in the ‘final testing’ phase. For this year’s Samsung flagship, the Android 4.4.3 update is expected to arrive sometime this month. Last year’s device is slated to get the latest version of Android in July. Being that this is just an alleged status report, do not hold anything to it. Also, carriers in the United States tend to take a bit longer to push these updates to their devices. So sit tight and enjoy the weather. Source: Andr…

by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Microsoft has a new virtual personal assistant, Cortana, that is part of the Windows Phone 8.1 developer’s preview and is scheduled to formally launch later this year in the U.S., the U.K. and China. Currently, Cortana can be used by anyone willing to set their device to U.S. settings, an action that has proven to be popular in China. Microsoft does not seem to be content to making Cortana available in different geographic regions – they are also discussing making Cortana available on other platforms, including Android. In recent statements, Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone Group Program Manager, said, We want to scale Cortana internationally and across devices. The Andr…

Samsung Galaxy F in Perfect Golden color leaks
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
The newest leak of Samsung’s rumored Galaxy F shows the top half of a press render of the device in a “Perfect Golden” color. The wallpaper of the device matches what we’ve previously seen, and the back of the device definitely looks like brushed metal, which actually looks pretty similar to the HTC One. Aside from that, we can see the heart rate monitor is still present next to the camera flash. Still no word on exactly when we’re going to see this device become official, but we can enjoy the steady stream of leaks until then. source: evleaks Come comment on this article: Samsung Galaxy F in Perfect Golden color leaks Visit TalkAndroid for Android …

Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G review: Extra large and light on the wallet
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Huawei (pronounced Wah-Way) isn’t the most well known name, at least in the U.S., but that hasn’t stopped them from becoming one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world. They might not be in the same ballpark as Samsung and Apple, but they do sit in the 3rd spot with just under 5% of the global market share. Now Huawei has set their sights on Samsung. That is lofty to say the least, but one thing is for sure, you can’t be number one without a presence in the U.S. So Huawei has made the Ascend Mate2 4G available for purchase now. Unfortunately, it’s not available at a carrier store, which is where most consumers feel comfortable buying a phone. However, if yo…

How to change or clear default app settings in Android
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
Ever browsed through your Twitter feed on your device, tapped on a link, and been directed to the page via your ‘non-preferred’ browser? Have you ever wanted to snap a picture using the hardware camera button on your device, but it keeps opening your default camera app, rather than the brand new Google Camera app you downloaded, or perhaps another third-party camera app? There are plenty of apps in the Play Store that can be used to “replace” functions already on your device. In order to use them properly and set them as the “default” app for the specific function they fulfill on your device, you’ll have to do some tinkering. It isn’t tough, but some Android use…

Portland takes a huge step toward getting Google Fiber
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Although Portland, Ore. is known as the city that's perpetually stuck in the early 1990s, it might be about to get a fiber network that's very 21st century. The Oregonian reports that Portland's city council has voted unanimously to approve Google Fiber's franchise agreement with the city, which paves the way for Google's high-speed fiber network to set up shop in the northwest for the first time. Qualcomm announces new chip that will help in-home 4G LTE coverage
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Cell phone users are all too familiar with the impact being inside a building, like their own home, has on their ability to get service. This was true with the 3G networks when cellular providers would deploy femto cells to try to address holes in coverage. The problem is no less true for the new 4G LTE networks being deployed. To help combat this latest version of the problem, Qualcomm has introduced the FSM90xx low-cost chip. Qualcomm believes that by using this new chip, device makers could include them in cheap consumer grade WiFi access points. Wireless operators could effectively deploy mini 4G LTE cells that cover an individual home and not much else. For users…

Project Athena clues in Chromium point to touch interface for Chrome OS
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Some recent forays into the code for Chromium reveal a project called Athena that could be a new touch-optimized interface for Chrome OS. While Google could just be working on a major facelift to their Ash interface that has been used for a couple years now, it does appear Athena could open the door to Chrome OS being deployed on a smartphone or tablet. Some of the issues that developers are working on as part of Athena include: a touchscreen or virtual keyboard; a card-based interface for some items; a system to incorporate extensions to Athena; an initiative called Ares that “will be the home/launcher screen in Athena as well as the launcher for Ash.” Som…

Google Maps becomes Google’s second 1 billion-download hit
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
When we saw that Gmail last month became the first Android app to reach 1 billion downloads, we just knew Google Maps couldn't be that far behind. And sure enough, Android Police points out that Google Maps has recently crossed the 1 billion download threshold, making it the second Android app in history to reach this milestone. Of course, like Gmail, Google Maps comes preinstalled on most Android phones, so it shouldn't surprise us that it reached 1 billion downloads at around the same time as Gmail. Nonetheless, it's an extremely impressive milestone for both apps and a reminder of just how much Google's apps and services have been conquering the world, even among peopl…

One big driver for wearable computers is that they'll supposedly give us improved health and fitness data, but what about computers that you can eat and drink from? Mark One has just taken the wraps off its Vessyl, a new 13-ounce "smart cup" that will not only be able to detect and breakdown what you're pouting into your cup but also give you nutritional information on it such as how many calories it has as well as how much sugar, fat and caffeine it contains. You can view data on your drunks either on the side of the cup itself or through the official Vessyl iOS app. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
