Samsung, LG reportedly working on Quantum Dot displays
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
A new report from Chinese news site ET News indicates both Samsung and LG are working to incorporate Quantum Dot technology into their displays, possibly as soon as this year. Unlike recent moves my manufacturers to increase the resolution of their displays to produce crisper images, QD technology is intended to improve the color range, brightness levels and power consumption attributes of LCD displays. The QD technology relies on an additional substrate material in the layers of a display screen. One of the hurdles to adoption of QD has been the cost and additional complexity involved in production. However, Amazon seems to have cracked that as the Kindle Fire HDX use…

ZTE eyes high-end market for future growth
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
ZTE, the world’s ninth-largest smartphone manufacturer, is looking to move into the high-end market in 2015 to help improve financial performance and improve their presence in markets like the U.S. ZTE, like other Chinese manufacturers, have tended to operate in the lower end of the market relying on sales quantity in markets like China to offset the razor-thin margins they achieve with their devices. Zeng Xuezong, ZTE’s executive vice-president, says “we will make more and more premium smartphones” joining Huawei and Lenovo as companies hoping to break out in coming years. Zeng thinks ZTE is in a good position to make a move now. Perhaps the biggest impetus is the int…

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

At major presentations, attendees are typically given some freebies. This year at Google I/O, the freebie will be something very interesting. According to Android Authority, the LG G Watch will be given away to everyone in attendance at Google I/O. Google has done this in the past with Google Glass and the Nexus Q. Both the G Watch and Moto 360 will be introduced to showcase Android Wear, but only LG’s smartwatch will be given away. In the same report, it is said that an additional manufacturer will be unveiling an Android Wear-powered device. It is currently unknown which company this will be. One name to throw into the arena is HTC as they are rumored to be prepping …

A great idea, ruined: Perpetual negativity is driving me away from social
by Guest Darren Murph- 0 replies
I’m spending far less time on social media these days than I once did. A combination of factors have led to this. First off, there’s the inherent risk of saying something that ends up crossing an esoteric line and gets you fired while you’re high above the Atlantic en route to Africa. Second, it’s simply too noisy to make sense of in any sane amount of time. And third, I’ve found that focusing more on my surroundings — things that I choose to take enjoyment in — leaves less time for negativity to find its way into my soul via someone else’s keystroke. The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday afternoon reported that Google has reached a deal that will see it acquire Skybox Imaging for $500 million. Discussions between the two companies had previously been reported by The Information. Skybox operates a number of satellites that it uses to capture ultra high-resolution photos of Earth, and it is believed that Google will use the satellites' capabilities to capture Google Earth imagery of areas that were previously not accessible. Is the Xbox One still paying for last year’s E3 PR blunders?

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/4c04c98751095884bc05a179e18d3261.jpg Let's be clear right off the bat: The Xbox One is an awesome console even if it is currently in second place behind the PS4 in terms of sales. All the same, sales do matter and shrewd Xbox fan Paul Thurrott notices that this year's Xbox One presentation at E3 marked a dramatic reversal from the presentation that Microsoft gave at E3 2013 where it went out of its way to tout all of the new console's home entertainment features. This year, however, it was all about the games and Thurrott thinks that a big reason for this is that Microsoft made a lot of major public relations mistakes with game…

Hey BlackBerry, 2011 called and it wants its Bold 9900 back
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 was the coolest cat in RIM’s yard back in 2011, but those days are long gone. Since then, the company has changed its name to BlackBerry and lost nearly all its smartphone market share, as consumers have moved to competing platforms including iOS, Android and Windows Phone. However, new CEO John Chen is not ready to throw in the towel, and has a new smartphone available for pre-order, the brand new… BlackBerry Bold 9900? Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Between Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and now Watch Dogs, Ubisoft has a stable of some of the most popular franchises on the market, and the company didn't disappoint with another huge showing at E3 this year. There weren't many surprises, but unlike some of the other conferences, many of the games Ubisoft presented will actually be on store shelves at some point this year. This isn't an outline of the new generation — these are games we'll all be playing in just a few months. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Secret new iOS 8 features let you do something Apple has never allowed before
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Apple's iOS platform and Google's Android software are quite similar in some ways, but there are a number of areas where these two leading mobile platforms differ dramatically. One such area pertains to user interface customization — Android's open nature has allowed for the creation of a wide range of third-party user interface tweaks that help people customize Android to better suit their needs. Apple might never open iOS up quite that much, but secret options in iOS 8 have been uncovered that let users make some big interface customizations for the first time. Continue reading... IPHONE 6 LEAK: iPhone 6, iPhone phablet release schedule seemingly revealed
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Once or twice a year, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White heads to the Far East to meet with his various unnamed supply chain contacts. Sometimes, he comes back with some real scores — White was among the first to suggest that Apple was working on an iPad mini ahead of its debut, and he was also the first to reveal that Apple intended to launch iPhones in new colors last year. Other times, he comes back with big misses. White has proven accurate at times in the past though, and now he's back with news pertaining to the launches of Apple's iPhone 6, iWatch and iPhone phablet. Continue reading... iOS 8 BETA REVIEW: A week with iOS 8
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
All things considered, the past year with my iPhone has been pretty boring. I have discussed the state of smartphones countless times here on BGR. For savvy power users like myself — and like millions of BGR readers out there — we’re in a bit of a lull right now. Put plainly, 2013 was a pretty boring year for smartphone fans. Innovation doesn’t grow on trees, and impressive progress has been made in the smartphone market over the past 18 months. Phones are thinner and sleeker than they ever have been before. Mobile operating systems like Android, iOS and Windows Phone have been updated with plenty of nifty new features. Has anything been introduced that might tru…

by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies

If you wanted a Leap Motion controller, you either need to buy the stand-alone sensor for $79, buy the HP Envy 17 Leap Motion Special Edition, or buy one of 11 other HP devices that came with a keyboard that have an embedded Leap Motion sensor. Now you can buy that keyboard as a stand-alone device for any computer for $99, Engadget was told at the Computex trade show. Of course, you’ll need to have the Leap Motion software installed, which can run on Windows 7 or 8 and Mac OS X 10.7 or higher. When Leap Motion was announced in 2012, we called it “one of the coolest pieces of technology we’ve seen in a while" and its gesture controls look like a vision of the future. Despi…

Everything you need to know about iOS 8′s TestFlight feature
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
One of the iOS 8 features Apple spoke about on stage last week is called TestFlight, and it’s aimed specifically at iOS developers who want to offer beta versions of their apps to iPhone and iPad users in a more friendly fashion. While developers were able to offer beta versions of their apps ahead a full-fledged launch, the process was rather tedious and annoying, both for the app developer and for the users looking for access. That’s all about to change starting with iOS 8, and iMore has taken an in-depth look at how TestFlight will work. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

LIVE COVERAGE: Streaming video and liveblogging from Sony's big E3 press conference!
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

It might not have been what we expected, but Sony is coming into E3 2014 as the console maker to beat. With more exclusives, better specs and a less imposing price tag, the PS4 won the first battle of the new generation. Now, Sony might have taken an early lead, but with all the recent changes over at the Xbox camp, the most popular video game console of the generation needs to keep getting better to stay on top. Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE rumored to be coming to T-Mobile
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

While the WiFi version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 was released in the U.S. back in February, we didn’t see the LTE version. It seems like that might change, with the device rumored to be coming to T-Mobile. The rumors suggest that the device will be coming to T-Mobile “later in the summer”. There’s no word yet on pricing, but we know it probably won’t be cheap. The LTE version of the device will allow users to make phone calls, but apart from that it likely won’t be too different from the WiFi version.
