This key iOS 8 feature will change how you use your iPhone
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
Apple announced many exciting new features for iOS and OS X last week at its annual World Wide Developers Conference, but the feature that will do the most to change how we use iOS is called Extensions. As the name suggests, extensions allow apps to extend their functionality to other apps. But Apple being Apple, these extensions still face many restrictions in order to maintain long battery life and to keep apps secure. To understand Extensions, Ars Technica dug deep into the developer docs and the WWDC session videos and has provided the most detailed look into how Extensions will work. Continue reading... Hidden iOS 8 code confirms split-screen multitasking really is coming to iOS
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple didn't show off split-screen multitasking features during its big iOS 8 presentation at WWDC 2014 last week but new code found in the iOS 8 version of SpringBoard shows that this key feature really is coming to your iPad soon. Developer Steven Troughton-Smith writes on his Twitter account that SpringBoard has code that will let you run two apps side-by-side at two different sizes: A fourth of full size, a half of full size and three-fourths of full size. iOS 8's Control Center could be getting some awesome -- and MUCH NEEDED -- new features
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
One of the problems iOS users have with the Control Center feature introduced in iOS 7 is that it can’t be customized by users to better suit their needs, unless the device is jailbroken. The settings shortcuts placed inside Control Center offer fast access to some toggles for turning on and off certain features, but the user is limited to only some predefined actions. However, that may change in the future, iDownloadBlog reports, as Apple could allow iPhone and iPad owners to customize their Control Centers. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

It has been a long time coming, and now it has finally happened: Microsoft's Internet Explorer is no longer the most widely used web browser in the United States. According to the latest Adobe Digital Index for the month of April, Google's Chrome browser has unseated Internet Explorer in the U.S., accounting for 31.8% of all web browser usage during the month. Adobe's data shows that Internet Explorer's browser share was 30.9% in April. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

We’ll be live from Sony’s E3 press conference today at 9:00PM!
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Closing out the day, Sony is going to do everything in its power to retain the huge lead its been given early in this new console generation. With a $100 price advantage over the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 quickly established itself as the console to own in late 2013, which carried over into the new year supported by the PS4's slightly more powerful hardware and an arguably better lineup of exclusives. Now that Microsoft has ditched Kinect to reach the $399 price tag, added its own offering of free monthly titles and fixed many of the software issues that plagued the Xbox One at launch, there's only one weapon Sony has left in its arsenal: a lineup of great games. With T…

EU “right to be forgotten” results may be flagged on Google search page
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Since a European Union court ruled last month that people in their jurisdiction have a “right to be forgotten” everyone has been watching how Google will respond to the court’s requirement that history be censored. Other search engines are impacted by the same ruling, but thus far Google is the only one that has made any move publicly with regard to the ruling. At the end of May Google launched a new online form for people to submit their requests to have results suppressed. Now it appears Google is considering adding language to their search results page to alert users to the fact that the results have been censored in accordance with the European Court’s ruling. The lan…

Boost Mobile adds the waterproof Kyocera Hydro Icon to its lineup
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Some people just don’t want or need that expensive smartphone. Sometimes they just want durability. So Boost Mobile customers can now take a look at the Hydro Icon. This Kyocera device, carrying a differently branded name, brings mid-range specifications to Boost Mobile customers for $149.99 without a contract. To protect it, Kyocera made sure it had IP57 certification. This means it can be submerged in up to 1m of water for 30 minutes. The Hydro Icon can absorb shock from drops and falls thanks to its Military Standard 810G design. Interestingly enough, the device supports wireless charging right out of the box (PMA standard). The 4.5-inch display has a qHD resolution…

HTC updates HTC Gallery app to enhance UFocus blur function, other tweaks
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
HTC has updated their HTC Gallery app to add user adjustability for the UFocus Blur effect. Owners of the HTC One (M8) with HTC’s new Duo Camera know they can just tap on an image to change the focal point. By changing that focal point, the rest of the image is blurred to create a bokeh effect. The new feature adds a slider so that users can customize not only the location of the focal point, but the level of blur that is applied to the rest of the image. Users can now increase the level of blur even more than what the HTC thinks the default should be or decrease it so no additional digital blur is added. If you have a device with HTC’s Sense 6 interface, the new Galle…

LG releases new videos showcasing features of the LG G3
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

After Samsung and HTC had big flagship device reveals earlier this year that included quick, if not immediate, availability of their devices, smartphone buyers hoping to get an LG G3 continue to wait for word on when the device will actually be available. Perhaps to appease the masses, LG has released a whole series of videos highlighting some of the features they are bringing to the market with the LG G3. Like other manufacturers, LG recognizes there are a lot of consumers out there that want to both protect their device’s screen and access information quickly. LG’s answer to this is the QuickCircle function that works with the QuickCircle Case, so one of the videos h…

You won't just be able to play all of the early classic Halo games on the Xbox One — you'll get a brand new one as well. Microsoft on Monday revealed that it's going to a release a beta version of Halo 5: Guardians' multiplayer features this December, or a little less than a year before the full game launches in the fall of 2015. Halo, of course, is the Xbox's most popular exclusive franchise and its next chapter figures to be one of 2015's most anticipated titles. The multiplayer beta will start on December 27th this year and last through January 17th of 2015. Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Netflix explains why it’s trying to shame Verizon into improving its network
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Netflix might stop trashing Verizon's network next week... or it might not. Netflix on Monday posted an explanation on its blog explaining why it started telling its customers to blame Verizon's network for slow streaming. The company says that these network-trashing messages are part of a trial program that's slated to end on June 16th, although it says it might expand on the program in the future. Continue reading... IPHONE USERS, BEWARE: Yet another flaw in iOS 7 and iOS 7.1 lets anyone bypass lock screen...
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/dedf628c00773e3909ce063f8abf78aa.jpg We have seen several security flaws discovered in iOS in the past that let people bypass a user's lock screen by using a convoluted sequence of taps and swipes. The good news is by the time enough people learn about these vulnerabilities for them to pose a serious threat, they're often already addressed in an update from Apple. Since so many people update to the latest versions of Apple's iOS software so quickly, threats are often minimized. The bad news, however, is that each time one hole is plugged, a new one is discovered. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

For a while now, we've wondered whether Microsoft had a plan to really differentiate Windows Phone from iOS and Android and make it more than just another mobile platform. The Verge's Tom Warren reports that Microsoft is working on integrating its Kinect motion detection software into Windows Phone in a big way that could really give Microsoft a way to draw a lot more people to use its platform. Galaxy F makes multiple appearances over the weekend
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
The premium version of the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy F, has made an appearance much akin to a celebrity baby sighting. Today we’re seeing a leak over at phoneArena regarding the potential premium device showing it in the outside world. The phone in question is a preproduction model of the device sporting a Snapdragon 801 although it’s said that this will change to the 805 when it reaches full production. According to the tipster, the phone is slightly smaller than the S5 and will have thinner bezels as well. It will come with the IP 67 certification meaning that it will have the same protection against dust and water as the Galaxy S 5 has. That aside, we ca…

M7 builds of CyanogenMod now available

While many folks use the nightly builds of CyanogenMod there are a select few who prefer a more stable release, myself included. Those few will be happy to know that CyanogenMod has released M7 build of CM 11. The monthly snapshot — said to be more stable than the nightly builds — is derived from the May 22 nightly branch as opposed to the newer May 31 branch. This snapshot includes the following fixes: * Common: Theme Chooser UI Overhaul * Common: Calculator app redesign (courtesy Xlythe) * Common: Performance Profiles * Common: Improved theming performance on low memory devices (~512MB RAM or less) * Trebuchet: Move settings to new slide-out panel * Trebu…

Microsoft’s Surface Smartwatch gets a test drive, shows several hardware sensors and multiple...
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

Over the weekend, a report surfaced about someone using Microsoft’s upcoming smartwatch in the wild. Fortunately for us, that means we get to know a little more about the details of the watch and whether or not it’ll still be available for our Android devices. The report went into detail about the hardware of the Surface Smartwatch and mentioned that it has a rectangle screen, similar to the Gear Fit, instead of the square design like Android Wear devices. It also has enough sensors to cover just about everything you could imagine using it for, including a heart rate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS. Outside of the sensors, though, the hardware seemed a li…

WakeUp allows you to turn your screen on without the power button
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies

Have you ever just wanted to turn on your screen without having to hit the power button? Well now you can. A new app in the Play Store by XDA senior member cb56, known as WakeUp allows you to do just that. The app recognizes when you pick up your phone and tilt it toward you and the screen comes on. You’ll be greeted with a fair amount of customization options such as haptic feedback, tilt sensitivity, and app timeout periods. I haven’t used the app so I can’t say if it has any negative effect on the battery but the app does come with this little warning: The application uses a little battery while monitoring because it prevents the device from going to sl…

Google Glass coming to AT&T stores
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Google Glass purchases were recently opened up to anyone in the U.S., but the big question has always been…When will it actually be available at the retail level? Well that day might be coming real soon, and AT&T is likely to one such place that you will be able to go and grab one. Unfortunately no other retailers were mentioned, but what we do know is that AT&T will be “one of the first locations,” which implies that they won’t be the only place. However, they could get exclusivity for a limited time. As to when you will be able to walk into your local AT&T store and grab one is anyone’s guess, but I would expect an announcement at Google I/O regarding t…

In Phone Arena’s G3 battery life tests, the handset came on top of the competition, beating every top Android handset released this year, including the Galaxy S5. Continue reading... 5 things you need to know about Apple’s big stock split
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Apple shares will open under $100 for the first time in years on Monday, but don't panic. As the company announced alongside its fiscal second-quarter earnings back in April, Apple is splitting its stock for the fourth time in the company's history. The huge 7-for-1 split is obviously quite atypical and it will bring Apple's share price from the $640-range down to the $90-range. But there's plenty more to this story, and the Associated Press has put together a simple list containing 5 key things you need to know about Apple's split. Continue reading... Apple Maps is still too much of a mess to even get mentioned at WWDC
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

If you were hoping that Apple would announce big improvements to its Maps application on iOS 8 last week, you came away sorely disappointed since Apple barely bothered to mention the oft ridiculed mapping application at all. Now TechCrunch's sources inform us that there was a reason for that: Apple Maps is apparently still too much of a mess to even warrant a mention at Apple's big developers conference.
