John Oliver’s successful net neutrality appeal broke the FCC
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Net Neutrality is one of the hottest tech- and Internet-related topics right now, as the FCC’s proposed regulations could have a negative impact on the way Internet companies work, and ultimately, on the pocket of regular Internet users. But because the matter seems complex, and awfully boring in some cases, not many people take a stance against the FCC’s proposals. That has been the argument of comedian John Oliver’s appeal to Internet trolls. And not only that — during his Sunday HBO show “Last week Tonight” he called upon trolls to tell the FCC how they feel about its proposal. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Star Wars-like 3D projectors may be coming to smartphones sooner than you think
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
Earlier this year, we revealed that Amazon is working on a phone that uses multiple cameras to make its screen look 3D. While this may sound like something that will bring us one step closer to Star Wars–esque holograms, it will be much different because the 3D image would clearly be under the phone’s display. However, one company from California is working to go a step further, and according to a profile by the Wall Street Journal, we may see its 3D projector that can fit into smartphones and living rooms as soon as the end of next year. by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

As Google continues the slow march towards making Google Glass a viable consumer product, one of the issues they are addressing is the fashion statement the devices make. They have announced some new offerings to help potential fashion conscious users of Google Glass with five new frames and eight shades from designer Diane von Furstenberg. Dubbed the DVF | Made for Glass collection, the new choices will be available starting June 23rd through the Google Glass store and Net-A-Porter, an on-line luxury fashion retailer. Google already has a line of frames and shades available known as the Titanium collection. To help promote sales of that collection, they are expanding…

LG’s G3 does indeed contain metal — some metal, at least
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
Plastic or metal? Metal or plastic? There’s been an ongoing debate on whether LG’s upcoming G3 contains any metal in its body, or whether it’s only a plastic device. Well LG has confirmed today that there actually is some metal materials in the body, but unfortunately it’s on the inside, so you can’t see it. In other words, it’s not part of the exterior, opposite of what we see on the HTC One M8. Most of the back cover is made of polycarbonate (the long-rumored matte finish that will keep fingerprints away from the G3′s exterior) but it does have a very thin film of real metal below the polycarbonate. It’s not much news, but it does clear up some of the rumo…

Microsoft Office Touch will likely be released on Android before Windows 8
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Microsoft release a touch-friendly version of Office apps (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) to iOS devices earlier this year, while making the bundled Office Suite a free download for Android users. There have been rumors floating around about when Microsoft would finally break down and release their office apps on another platform, especially on the Android side of the fence, but after the earlier announcement Android users were still left wondering when or if it would ever happen. The newest rumors point towards something pretty odd, though. Microsoft may actually release touch-friendly versions of their office apps for Android before they see a launch on Windows 8 device…

Here’s the wildest Google Maps Easter Egg yet
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Google is hides all sorts of neat tricks in its products, aptly referred to as Easter Eggs, and the company has included one such software trick in its popular Google Maps product. Users looking for directions from Snowdon to Brecon Beacons (in the U.K.) will be happy to hear they’ll be able to choose between more means of transportation than usual. In addition to driving, transit, biking and cycling directions, users will also get the option to get directions they can follow while riding a dragon — likely a Welsh one. Continue reading... Not even the world’s best Android phone could save HTC in May
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies
HTC has faced many setbacks, disasters and bitter disappointments since its handset unit performance started missing projections around Christmas 2011. But May 2014 might have been the most devastating blow yet. That is because HTC had supposedly reacted to miserable sales declines in 2012 and 2013 by revamping its handset design and marketing strategies. Both the product and how it is sold were changed to finally staunch the bleeding by spring of 2014. Yet despite the new product and branding initiatives, May 2014 turns out to be a chilling omen of a summer of horror for the besieged Taiwanese vendor. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Why Samsung will keep killing other Android vendors unless Google intervenes
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

It isn't hard to feel for HTC. For two straight years, it's released hugely acclaimed Android phones that have been praised in the tech media as some of the best in the world. And for two straight years it's posted big year-over-year sales declines in May, just when sales from its newest flagship devices ought to be the strongest. Continue reading... That old Nokia phone in your attic might be worth $1,400
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies

There is now organized resistance against the modern smartphone. And it appears to be quite lucrative. A website called Vintage Mobile offers a wide array of defiantly dumb phones from the era when Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson ruled the global handset market and there was a wide range of different designs and form factors. Refurbished models on Vintage Mobile sell typically for between $100 and 200, but there are some gems that command four figures. Among European connoisseurs of the art of mobile handset, the Nokia 8800 Arte Carbon has achieved legendary status — and the price of a refurbished model in 2014 is nearly $1,400. Continue reading... The most hilarious thing you’ll see today: Teens react to 1990s Internet
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Last week, we showed you a hilarious video from the Fine Brothers that showed young kids reacting to an old computer. The funny clip showed several children trying to figure out how to use an old Apple II from the late 1970s. Of course, none of them could even figure out how to turn it on, though one child happily exclaimed that a game the Fine Brothers loaded up for her was at least "better than Flappy Bird!" Now, the Fines are back with another hilarious video that shows teens reacting to the Internet of the 1990s. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

OS X isn’t becoming more like iOS – they’re maturing, together
by Guest Darren Murph- 0 replies

Sighs generally signal one of two things. Oftentimes, sighs are exhaled with exasperation, highlighting frustration or disappointment. But every so often, on days like Monday, sighs of relief bubble up. For years now, I’ve relied on a MacBook of some description as my primary work machine. I typically have between 15 and 25 apps open, with many accomplishing something or another in the background. I know no foreign languages, but could probably quote at least four dozen OS X keyboard shortcuts on command. I’m the definition of a power user, and I was starting to think that Apple was hanging guys like me out to dry. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius …

According to design lead, a metal LG G3 would cost $300 more
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
The much anticipated LG G3 was officially unveiled last week, but despite rumors suggesting that the device would feature a metal body the device ended up being made of plastic. LG‘s Vice President of Mobile Design, Chul Bae Lee, recently spoke on the subject, saying there were a number of reasons for using plastic instead of the metal. The first of those reasons being that the device would cost $300 more. While we still don’t know the official price of the device, it has popped up on a number of pre-order sites with a price of £499. Other reasons for the device not including a metal body include the fact that the metal body would not meet certain design requir…

2013 Nexus 7 WiFi model Android 4.4.3 update rolling out OTA
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Yesterday Google finally started to roll out the Android 4.4.3 update for the 2013 version of the Nexus 7 tablet. However, the update is only available for the WiFi-only version of the tablet. The update is being rolled out as an over-the-air update. This comes after yesterday’s release of the images and binaries for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices. We expect it should be a short wait for owners of other versions of the Nexus 7 to start receiving an update. In the meantime, owners of the WiFi version will have to wait for the update to become available for them via Google’s phased rollout. If you just cannot stand to wait and want to give sideloading…

HTC officially takes the wraps off the HTC One (E8)
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
We already knew HTC has a plastic-bodied version of the HTC One (M8) ready to hit the market thanks to some information that went live on the HTC Chinese site late last week. In addition to the change in body material, the new HTC One (E8) comes with a regular, 13MP camera instead of HTC’s duo camera system. Some markets will also see a dual-SIM version of the device, including India and Hong Kong. It is unclear whether the HTC One (E8) will make it to the U.S. market. HTC has now issued an official press release to welcome the device to their portfolio. One of the big questions about the device has been pricing. When Apple released the iPhone 5S and 5C models last yea…

WatchESPN, MLS Matchday, Google+ Photos, and Crunchyroll support Chromecast
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Today, four new applications have added Chromecast support to their feature set. The WatchESPN app and Google+ Photos app are the two that users were demanding the most. WatchESPN lets users stream content from the ESPN family of networks. Live sports programming, such as the upcoming World Cup or NBA Finals, and studio programming like SportsCenter can all be watched through the WatchESPN app and casted over to the television. As for Google+ Photos, users can cast photographs from the Photos view of Google+. That easy. Another sports app adding Chromecast support is MLS Matchday. Unsurprisingly, users can watch games with Major League Soccer teams and even the United …

A surprising number of iPad and Mac users own Android phones
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple users have the reputation for being blindly loyal but a surprising number of them have crossed over to "the dark side" by buying an Android phone. According to a new survey of more than 3,800 people from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, roughly 35% of iPad owners and 28% of Mac owners have an Android smartphone. Even though a clear majority of iPad and Mac owners do own an iPhone, it's still somewhat surprising to see such a big chunk of users using both iOS and Android, especially given all of the comically whiny essays we're read from Apple diehards who couldn't even stand to use Android for a day.
