iOS 8′s new messaging features could scare your carrier to death
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies
This is not the first time Apple has sent a chill down the spines of mobile carrier executives. Years ago, the launch of the iMessage platform on iPhone was a quite obvious and direct attempt to undermine carriers' highly lucrative text-messaging business. Over the past couple of years, though, it hasn't been iMessage that has undermined SMS revenues around the world — it has been the cluster of cross-platform messaging apps like WhatsApp, LINE, Kakao, WeChat, etc. Continue reading... If there's a better way to start June than by downloading a handful of awesome paid iPhone apps for free, I don't know what it is. With WWDC 2014 about to get underway, many developers are celebrating by offering their apps for free for a limited time. As many of you are well aware, we here at BGR love sharing news of high-quality free apps that go on sale. Buying apps is important if you want to support developers and help ensure that they'll launch great new apps down the road, but who are we to complain if they're going to give the milk away for free every now and then? STOP THE MADNESS! Samsung just unveiled a smartphone that's bigger than some tablets
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Forget the Notes and the Megas, which are already extremely large Android handsets, because Samsung on Monday introduced a 7-inch smartphone, its biggest Android phone yet. Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy W, the phone isn’t a flagship device by any means. Instead, it's a 7-inch tab-phab-phoneblet that has the ability to make cellular calls. It will be available in South Korea later this month. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Spoiler pictures from the set of Star Wars Episode VII leak showing new alien creature
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
We learned about the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII in late April and now we're getting our first look right from the set. TMZ has obtained some leaked pictures that give us a closeup look at the set of the new film, including pictures of both a Tatooine marketplace and a gigantic hippopotamus-like creature that TMZ says takes five different men to operate. The new Star Wars movie is now being filmed in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, so it's not surprising that the pictures shown on TMZ's page all show a desert landscape. Continue reading... Excited for WWDC 2014? Watch Apple’s previous 10 WWDC keynotes while you wait
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Apple has been eerily quiet so far in 2014. So quiet, in fact, that it hasn't released a single new product in the past six months. While there aren't any blockbuster hardware announcements expected at WWDC 2014 — there should be one mysterious product announcement, though — Apple fans are finally in for something new as Apple shows off the next huge updates for its software platforms. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 during the opening keynote of this year’s WWDC edition, with The New York Times having already confirmed certain details about the company’s upcoming announcements that will cover, among other things, an iOS 8 health tracking app and Apple’s first smart home related efforts. Beyond those big announcements, The Wall Street Journal now says that the iPhone maker will also reveal more iBeacon-related plans during the conference. Continue reading... 7-inch Galaxy W makes debut in Korea
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies

With a 7-inch smart phone/tablet passing through the FCC last week, it was only a matter of time before we saw the release of this monstrosity. Well, it seems that today is the day as the Galaxy W smart tablet (phone?) made its debut in Korea. The Samsung device packs a 720p resolution, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Given that its running Touchwiz, you’ll probably only see about 9-10GB of that being usable. Luckily though the device packs a microSD card slot. It also has an 8MP rear shooter and a 2MP front camera. It comes with a large 3,200 mAh battery. Instead of Android 4.4 though, it comes with Jelly Bean (4.3). The devi…

Android 4.4.3 could start rolling today
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
We have been anticipating Android 4.4.3 for a while now, but today could finally be the day that it starts rolling. We have no idea if it’s premature or not, but T-Mobile says the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) are going to get the update starting today. The builds are KTU84M (Nexus 5) and KTU84L (Nexus 7 2013) and include many bug fixes. The changelog isn’t posted, but we suspect that it will include fixes to the camera, Wi-Fi issues, and numerous other annoying bugs. Let’s not forget, this very same thing happened a little over a month ago when Sprint posted that the Nexus 5 would receive Android 4.4.3, but was later pulled. Will this be the real deal? We certai…

With Computex 2014 in full swing, ASUS has taken to announcing three new tablet devices, all three of which, are running 64-bit processors. These devices include the Fonepad 8, MeMO Pad 7 and MeMO Pad 8. The Fonepad runs on an Intel Atom Z3560 quad-core processor running at 1.8GHz. It comes with dual front-facing speakers and an 8-inch IPS display at 1280×800. It boasts a 72.2 percent screen-to-body ratio, letting it have as ASUS puts it, “the largest viewing area of any 8-inch phablet on the market.” The MeMO Pad 8, or the “world’s lightest 8-inch LTE tablet,” sports an 8-inch 1080p display and a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz. The ASUS Transformer Book V is the first 5-in-1 Android / Windows device
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Back at CES, ASUS showed off the Transformer Book Duet (TD300), which was later cancelled. Since it was a Windows and Android device, it was believed the reason was because of pressure from Google. Apparently that wasn’t the case as today at Computex, ASUS unveiled something very similar in the Transformer Book V. The Transformer Book Duet was a 4-in-1 device, but the Transformer Book V takes it one step further making it a 5-in-1 device. Just like the Duet, it’s a Windows laptop, Windows tablet, Android laptop, and Android tablet, but the V adds PadFone capabilities by adding a standalone phone that can be docked. Our understanding on how it works is this….…

Asus still wants to marry Android to Windows
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Remember the Asus Transformer Book Duet? Asus imagined a dual-booting Android/Windows tablet/laptop that would offer users four independent modes, and switch between the two operating systems in just four seconds, and demoed the concept at CES 2014. However, following pressure from both Google and Windows, the device never saw the light of day. Both companies reportedly insisted that their partners do not release such dual-booting devices, but it looks like Asus is not ready to give up. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Google will spend more than $1 billion on deploying its first Internet-beaming satellite fleet, The Wall Street Journal has learned, with the company expected to start its Internet program with 180 small satellites that will be orbiting the earth at lower altitudes than traditional satellites, and which would help Google bring the Internet to remote locations where other means of connecting the population to the Internet aren’t practical. Samsung is now living the dream: It's built a smartphone that it can lard up with as much bloatware as it likes and there's nothing Google can do about it. Samsung on Monday took the wraps off the Samsung Z, its first-ever smartphone that runs on its own native Tizen operating system. The new device features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, a fingerprint scanner, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 2600mAh battery and Tizen 2.2.1. by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

A Reddit user with a throwaway account has posted a series of images showing various OS X 10.10 features. This is “the new OS X,” he wrote, adding that he took the photos himself at Apple in California. While the user has since removed the images from Reddit and deleted his account, the pictures have apparently been verified by one of Reddit’s mods, and also by MacRumors' sources. Google rumored to be implementing hands-free searching across all Android devices
by Guest Brendan Lynch- 0 replies
Google has been consistently expanding its Search application since the introduction of Google Now. It seems as though the company is interested in implementing an “always on” listening mode so that users can access relevant information without looking at or touching his or her device, being referred to as Android Eyes Free, internally. We have seen this type of functionality before in the Moto X and Verizon’s DROID line. However, Motorola’s implementation is only accessible via the command “OK Google Now”. Google is likely to take this a step further, allowing users to use a gesture or Bluetooth connected device to launch searches. This would be perfect for in-car s…

Google will invest over 1 billion dollars into satellites that spread internet access
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
As we’ve seen with Google’s Project Loon, the search giant is willing to throw money at strange flying objects to get more people connected to the internet. The latest project is going to be a bit more advanced than internet-dispensing balloons, however; this time, Google is using satellites. Google is planning on dumping $1 billion into a fleet of 180 small satellites that will orbit the earth, connecting tons of people to the internet. This works pretty similarly to Project Loon, but the low altitude satellites will be able to reach many more people than a hot air balloon. According to sources close to the project, however, the cost of this project could rise to a…

OnePlus shows off several accessories for the OnePlus One
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

For many people, a smartphone is only as good as its accessories. If you fall into that category and were wondering what’s going to be available for the OnePlus One, you can finally get a sneak peek at what’s going to be available for the budget-priced flagship device later this year. On the OnePlus forums, several pictures were posted of some accessories for the One, including the wall charger, a clear case, a bright yellow case, and some flip covers. All of the accessories look pretty well designed, and it looks like you can expect a few different color options, whether you want a more traditional case or one of the flip covers. We’ll keep you updated on any…

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 getting Galaxy S 5 features in latest update, including Kids Mode and...
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 3 is getting a small update that patches in a few really useful features from the new Galaxy S 5. The update includes Download Booster, the controversial feature that allows users to download files over both WiFi and 3G/4G simultaneously, and Kids Mode, which sets up a safe environment for kids to play around with on a device. It’s pretty crazy that T-Mobile and Samsung have backported Download Booster, a Galaxy S 5 feature, to the Note 3, when other carrier-branded Galaxy S 5s still don’t have Download Booster. Way to go, T-Mobile. T-Mobile doesn’t have a changelog up for the update just yet, but keep checking your notifications and let us kn…

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 press render leaks
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Just one day after seeing what the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 will look like, we have a press render of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 from Samsung. Like the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, this 8.4-inch tablet borrows the design language of the Galaxy S 5. This leak offers us all sorts of angles, too. The button layout is identical to the GS5 as Samsung is pushing this tablet in portrait mode compared to the landscape mode found on the Galaxy Tab S 10.5. And don’t forget, Samsung will be implementing its fingerprint sensor here as well. Moto X+1 not expected to arrive until very end of summer
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Moto X+1? You might want to take a look at another device. While we were fully expecting Motorola to announce its next flagship sometime this summer, it may be at the very end of the season. According to @evleaks, we should “not expect a Moto X+1 release until the literal end of summer — the last days of September.” Not exactly as near as anyone had thought. Last year’s Moto X was announced in early August and released later that month. So if late September is for the end of that month, an announcement would likely come in late August or early the following month. Again, not what anyone had in mind. At least this time around, Motorol…

Well the LG G3 dominated the news once again, but this time it was actually unveiled for real. It sure seems like an awesome phone, but does it have a chance to steal some of Samsung’s customers? HTC is said to be dropping development on the HTC One (M8) Prime, but it appears they still have a few more variants in the pipeline. What will the next flagship phone be? It appears Motorola is next in line with the Moto X+1. Android TV is oh so close, but will the failure of Google TV taint it in anyway? It’s time to get caught up and get ready for what is sure to be another exciting week in the world of Android. Accessories Sony launches wireless charging plate and cover…
