Samsung Galaxy Gear finally gets updated to Tizen
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Samsung promised to update the original Galaxy Gear to Tizen to bring it in line with the Gear 2, and it looks like the update is finally ready. The 2.2.0 version update will completely replace Android with Samsung’s in-house OS, Tizen, and bring a few extra features like better battery life and the ability to store music on the Gear locally. Most features on the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo that didn’t need specialized hardware (like the heart rate monitor) have been backported to the Galaxy Gear. The downside to the update, however, is that it’s going to wipe everything off of the Gear. Shouldn’t surprise anyone, though, considering this is a switch from one operating sy…

Motorola factory in Texas to close by the end of this year
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The Moto X was widely praised by critics. Did that same feedback nudge consumers to buy? Apparently not. Motorola will be closing its Texas factory, used to assemble the Moto X with Moto Maker, to do low sales and the cost of running the operation. Basically, the Texas factory was bleeding money for the company and now it will be closing by the end of this year. This comes just a year after the factory opened in May 2013. This comes as Lenovo is set to takeover Motorola at in the near future. The Chinese giant would not answer questions regarding its plans on what they would do with the United States assembly strategy, but now they will not have to worry at all. It se…

Apple’s smart home initiative could be awesome – even if it sounds boring at first
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Apple will reportedly unveil its own smart home plans at WWDC next week, but users shouldn’t expect any new Apple products or amazing software features for the home just yet, a GigaOm report seems to suggest. Apparently the company will not introduce any major products for the home, and will instead simply try to connect more home appliances and devices made by others to iOS products through its "Made for iPhone" (MFi) certification program. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/a1b8da99651b5434548fac3614c80f09.jpg One of the great things about Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak is that he'll almost always give you his honest take on something, even if it involves bashing Apple and its current product lineup. So when Woz tells us that he's a fan of Apple's decision to buy Beats for $3 billion, he's not just towing a company line — he's being completely sincere. Continue reading... Unnamed sources tell GigaOM that Google plans to launch a new platform called Android TV at its Google I/O developers conference in June and that it will place a heavy emphasis on both television and gaming. by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

The Moto 360 and LG's G Watch won’t be the only Android Wear devices coming out this year, as more gadget makers are apparently going to release Android-powered smartwatches. Of those, HTC is now said to have an Android Wear smartwatch in the works, expected to launch later this summer. The news comes from TK Tech News, the same source that posted extensive Galaxy S5 Prime and Active hands-on videos ahead of the latter’s official launch. Continue reading... Microsoft readying cross-platform capable smartwatch
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

Yet another company appears to be working on a smartwatch type wearables device and this time it is none other than Microsoft. Yes, the stalwart of the corporate world that has missed every stage of the evolution of smartphones is working on an initiative to get into the exploding wearables market that has been dominated by Samsung and Apple thus far. The market is young still, so it is not inconceivable someone could come along and take over the top spot. Microsoft’s effort appears to incorporate a few twists that could give it the competitive edge needed to unseat the market leaders. The biggest factor could be the fact that the device will supposedly be cross-platfo…

AT&T officially announces the Samsung Galaxy S 5 Active
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The Galaxy S 5 Active is finally here. The very durable handset from Samsung is available first on AT&T. If Titanium Gray isn’t really your color, you can choose from Camo Green and Ruby Red. Like the flagship Galaxy S 5, the GS5 Active has a 5.1-inch display with a 1080p resolution. Inside is once again Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz. Since everything is pretty much the same, what’s the difference here? The Galaxy S 5 Active has shock resistance in addition to the water and dust resistance that the Galaxy S 5 has. Samsung has thrown in a convenience key on the side of the device that, upon pressing it, launches applications that will be u…

Google clarifies UFOs were not seen in Kentucky, merely a Project Loon balloon
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
For now on, second guess yourself if you saw an unidentified flying object (as if you don’t already). Over in Pike County, Kentucky in 2012, residents believed they saw some UFOs soaring in the sky. Those residents were wrong. A year after the alleged sightings, Google has stepped forward to claim the blame. A Project Loon balloon that was launched in California somehow made its way eastward to Kentucky. Something went wrong with the controls and Google had no chance to recover the it. Despite Google providing an explanation saying that it was a prototype with a lengthier body, some of Pike County’s residents still believe they saw something much different than a ballo…

Is this Motorola’s next flagship Android phone?
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Motorola so far launched only low-end devices this year, including the Moto E and the Moto G 4G LTE, but the company is working on a Moto X+1 version, a Moto X successor that was already confirmed on the company’s website. The device, expected to offer user Moto X-like customization options and sell for around $400 should hit all major U.S. carriers later this year. While it’s not clear when the phone will launch, a couple of purported Moto X+1 images showing the handset have hit the web. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Why you might actually care about Microsoft’s smartwatch
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/ef522f0fca668c8c45a3282de80f763f.jpg Ugh, not another smartwatch. But wait — Microsoft thinks it knows how to make you care about it. According to Forbes, Microsoft is working hard to release a smartwatch this summer that will be the first smartwatch to be compatible with iOS, Android and Windows Phone. This means that, unlike with the Samsung smartwatches released so far, you won't need to own a phone from a particular brand to make the watch at all useful. Continue reading... UH OH... Apple just hired a Chinese task force to stop iPhone 6 leaks
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

There has been no shortage of iPhone leaks leading up to the highly anticipated launch of Apple's next-generation iPhone lineup. Well-known insider Ming-Chi Kuo seemingly outed all of the key details surrounding Apple's completely redesigned iPhone 6 and iPhone phablet back in April. Beyond that, we've seen dozens of mockups based on what are claimed to be schematics of Apple's new iPhones that leaked from Foxconn. But iPhone 6 leaks may soon be harder to come by — Apple has reportedly assembled a task force that will look to put an end to iPhone 6 leaks. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

CNET reports that at Re/code's conference this week, Son once again laid into America's ISPs and wondered why we bothered putting up with them and their pricey, subpar services. Continue reading... Google’s Video Quality Report monitors ISP quality and suggests solutions
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
There is nothing worse than having poor video streaming quality. Issues can be blamed on the device being used, the router, or the internet service provider (ISP). Google has a solution to find a solution for folks in the United States: the Video Quality Report. While it was previously available in Canada, it is now available here as well. The Video Quality Report is primarily meant to help with YouTube streaming, but users can use it as an indicator for anything else. Here are the different levels of quality: HD Verified: If your provider can consistently deliver HD video, a resolution of at least 720p, without buffering or interruptions–it’s HD Verified. Stand…

Amazon preparing to release music streaming service for Prime customers
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

Amazon is reportedly planning on releasing an on-demand music streaming service for customers of Amazon Prime. This will put Amazon, who is currently focusing on music sales rather than streaming, in competition with the likes of Beats and Spotify. The service will, however, have a number of limitations. For example, new releases won’t be available to stream. The service will only be serving music that is at least 6 months old. The amount of music will also be smaller than other streaming services. HTC to offer Amber Gold HTC One (M8) for $99 on-contract for one day
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
When HTC first introduced the HTC One (M8), some carriers offered two-for-one deals making the effective price of the device only $99. The caveat was you had to be willing to spring for two along with two-year contracts for each device. If you only needed one phone for yourself though, you were out of luck as far as deals went. HTC is going to give those buyers who only needed one device an opportunity to get similar pricing, but only if they are willing to buy the Amber Gold version of the phone. On Friday, May 30th, HTC will be selling the HTC One (M8) for $99 on-contract, which is half of the regular on-contract price. The sale starts at 12:01 am Central time and ca…
