WWDC 2014 just got even more boring – iOS 8′s split-screen multitasking isn’t ready to demo yet
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Microsoft can keep making fun of the iPad for not letting you multitask for a little while longer. The New York Times' Brian X. Chen writes on Twitter that he's been told "that the split-screen feature for iOS 8 isn't ready yet and won't be shown at WWDC." Split-screen multitasking is one of the most anticipated features coming to iOS 8 and it's something iPad users have wanted to have for a while now. Chen says that the new feature is still "a work in progress" at this point and we can only hope that it will be ready for whenever iOS 8 actually comes out, which will likely be in the fall with the launch of the iPhone 6. No matter how you slice it, however, this doesn't s…

Does the Comcast-TWC merger hinge on Comcast’s empty promise?
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
One of the more dubious arguments that Comcast has made in selling us on its merger with Time Warner Cable has been that the deal will be particularly good for low-income Americans. Why would giving Comcast what it wants help poor people, you ask? According to Comcast, they'll benefit from the expansion of its Internet Essentials program that's designed to make broadband services more affordable to people who don't have a lot of money. However, some new numbers crunched by the Center for Public Integrity shows that Comcast's program has had little to no impact on closing the digital divide. Continue reading... by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Apple on Wednesday confirmed it plans to purchase Beats for $3 billion, just as rumored in previous weeks. But the deal isn’t necessarily good news for all music creators, Bloomberg reports, especially for smaller artists who fear that Apple’s music streaming service will negatively impact their earnings. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/5fe5eb86a59fce05f80d2644127b5ef8.jpg Apple finally announced yesterday that it is buying Beats for $3 billion. This is by far the largest acquisition Apple has made, but is representative of a recent uptick in purchases by Apple, and this can largely be attributed to a man by the name of Adrian Perica, the head of mergers and acquisitions at Apple. Benchmarks for the Huawei Mulan confirm 8-core Kirin CPU and 4.9 inch screen
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Huawei’s flagship device for 2014, code named “Mulan,” has shown up in the AnTuTu benchmark database. We’re getting a pretty good look at what’s going to power the device, and it looks like it’s going to be a pretty powerful phone. The benchmark confirms an octa-core Kirin processor, 3 GB of RAM, and a 4.9-inch 1080p screen, which is definitely on the same level as the devices that are currently being released. Thanks to the large amount of RAM and capable processor, the Huawei Mulan scored a 36182 in a benchmark rating, putting it just behind the typical Snapdragon 801 and 805 benchmarks, but still above the widely used Snapdragon 800 CPU. While benchmarks don’t ne…

Sunrise Calendar app now available for Android
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Android users looking for a calendar app may want to check out the newly released Sunrise Calendar. Sporting a fresh user interface, even though the app has been available for Apple devices, the influence of Google’s design cues are readily apparent. Along with basic calendar functionality like the ability to add contacts and locations to entries, the Android version of the app includes a widget for quick access. For Android users who probably don’t use iCloud, Sunrise Calendar will connect to your Google calendars. Unfortunately, they have not yet added support for Exchange connections, so corporate users may not find this suitable. The developers also indicate the ap…

HTC One (E8) is official: a plastic One (M8) with slight changes
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
What everyone believed was the HTC One (M8) Ace has turned out to be a device known as the HTC One (E8). As noted yesterday, the promotional material leaked yesterday does indeed belong to an HTC website. Today, that content has gone live on HTC’s Chinese site and confirms what we learned yesterday. The HTC One (E8) has a plastic unibody and dumps the Duo Camera setup in favor of a single 13MP camera. Dual LED flash is also gone. There are some specifications from the One (M8) that HTC decided to keep, though. For example, the Boomsound stereo speakers and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz are still here. Do not count on this handset to arrive in…

Space.com reports that two years ago, some residents in Pike County, Kentucky reported seeing what they thought were UFOs from outer space but that turned out to be some of Google's balloons that the company plans to use to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to rural parts of the world that lack Internet service. by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies

While Nest has made headlines for its smart thermostats and smoke detectors but it didn’t gain the traction it deserved until Google plunked down the few billion dollars it did for the company. However, the company isn’t just sticking to thermostats and smoke detectors as CEO Tony Fadell, a former iPod executive, says that it’s exploring a variety of other areas as well. In an interview at the Code Conference, Fadell mentioned that the company was looking into various things associated with the home including security and health. As he said in the interview: “I think there are a lot of unloved categories in the home. Like Elon [Musk] has done with Tesla, you…

T-Mobile’s campaign of redefining the carrier industry continues with Un-carrier 5.0 on June 18 in Los Angeles. What can T-Mobile possibly reveal at this event? The only clue we get from the invite is “We don’t play it safe and sound,” which can only mean that AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless will be watching and hoping that T-Mobile doesn’t force them to re-think what they are doing yet again. Keep hoping guys!! Come comment on this article: Un-carrier 5.0 slated for June 18 Visit TalkAndroid for Android news, Android guides, and much more! News via TalkAndroid

As we move closer to Google’s annual I/O conference, we’re going to see some of the things the search giant plans on showcasing at the event. Today we’re seeing a post on Google+ from the Android Developers account showcasing the notification system of Android Wear. Timothy Jordan shows us what to expect with the upcoming wearables OS. Apps that create notifications on your Android tablet or smartphone can extend to your Android Wear packing device, showing you notifications from there as well. By adding a few lines of code, Jordan says that developers can “deliver even richer experiences on the wearables by using stacks, pages, and voice replies.” To distingu…

Last week, Google brought elevation levels to the desktop version of Maps. Of course, it would make the most sense to have something like this on your phone, and that is exactly what Google did. Samsung SM-T2558 passes through FCC
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies

Earlier in the month, there was a leak that suggested that Samsung was toying with a smartphone that had a 7-inch screen. It was rumored to be the Galaxy Mega 2 in some areas, while other rumors have the device pegged as something new with a Galaxy W moniker. Coming with a model name SM-T2558, the device is pegged as being a tablet, but rather than looking like Samsung’s current line of tablets, the device looks to be a much larger smartphone. However, the T in the model name is usually pegged for tablets. The device will have a 720p display with a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, an 8MP camera in the back, a 2MP camera in the front, 8GB of internal memory th…

by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Google sat back for a short while and watched companies like Sony, Motorola and Samsung launch Android-based smartwatches that reminded us a lot of early Android tablets — they were half-baked and rushed to market. Then, Google decided to take matters into its own hands and build a special version of Android designed specifically for wearable devices. Android Wear already looks promising, thanks mostly to the gorgeous Moto 360 smartwatch set to launch in the coming months. We've had a few brief looks at the platform so far, and now a Google engineer has shared images of Android Wear's notifications system for the first time. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy …

Smartphones have been around for quite some time but truth be told, they weren't terribly smart until the advent of on-device app stores. Apps had existed before, of course, but finding them and installing them was a huge pain that involved dealing with awful sites like Handango and then transferring files from your PC to a phone, so most people didn't bother. App stores changed all that and turned smartphones into devices that are always morphing, gaining new functionality with each app we install. The capabilities we're now afforded are priceless — but they're even better when the price is free. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

As we've noted previously, Spencer has been known for his community interaction for years -- it's nice to see the trend continue, even days out from one of the industry's most important events.
