AT&T finally pencils in a release date for the ASUS PadFone X
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The day has finally come folks. An ASUS PadFone will actually be available at a U.S. carrier. It was announced back at CES that AT&T would carry it, but we wondered if they would actually ever release it. AT&T finally put our worries to sleep by announcing that it will be available starting June 6. You will be able to get it on AT&T Next 18 for $22.92 per month, Next 12 for $29.80 per month, or on a two-year contract for $199. They are also offering a $50 discount on the purchase of the blue or white ASUS two-pack tablet cover and Wireless Charging Folio and Duracell Wireless Charging Mat. That deal will end July 24. You can see a few quick videos along wi…

Official HTC One (M8) Ace specifications appear
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

The longer it takes for HTC to announce the One (M8) Ace, the more leaks that will surface. However, this one could render all others useless. What seems to be promotional material for the device to be put on a website has leaked. We’re looking at a device very similar to the HTC One (M8), but there are of course some differences. On the outside, HTC kept the Boomsound stereo speakers. The construction of the One (M8) Ace, though, is a plastic unibody rather than aluminum. On the inside is, again, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz. Since HTC did not include Duo Camera system, the back camera has been bumped up to 13MP. The front facing camera remain…

Possible unannounced Motorola flagship with 5-inch+ display spotted in the wild
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Are we looking at the Moto X+1 or some other Motorola device? The image above was obtained by @evleaks thanks to a tip and shows an alleged Motorola handset roaming around in Chicago (where the company is based). The user is seemingly running stock Android and Google+ is the app running here. The description for the device’s display was 5 inches or more. If more, there is a chance this is that 6.3-inch Motorola device. But right now, all signs point to the Moto X+1 having the company’s focus. Motorola used last summer to launch the Moto X, and they are doing the same this year. Source: @evleaks (Official site) Come comment on this article: Possible unannounced …

New app brings turbocharged ‘Find My iPhone’ features to Android and iPhone
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

According to the mobile security experts at Lookout, more than 1 in 10 smartphone owners in America have had a handset stolen at some point. Of them, 68% were unable to recover their stolen devices. The issue of smartphone theft is clearly a serious one. In fact, the NYPD recently stated that thefts of Apple's iPhone and iPad were to blame for the increased crime rate in New York City last year. Thieves aren't going to stop stealing smartphones anytime soon, so it's time to take theft prevention and recovery systems more seriously. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

This is the cheapest 3D printer money can buy
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Following the success of the $199 Micro 3D printer on Kickstarter – the project topped its $50,000 funding goal by $3,351,000 – a new, even more affordable 3D printer project has just started raising money on Indiegogo. Called the New Matter MOD-t, the 3D printer costs just $149 for the first 500 buyers, which is $100 less than its future commercial price, and will ship in April 2015, assuming the company can raise the $375,000 it needs to build it. The FTC wants to put online privacy back in your hands
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

When it comes to the Internet, your eyeballs are worth more than you know. Online advertising is a massive multi-billion dollar industry and the companies dominating the industry — Google and Facebook, for example — are the companies in possession of the most private data. This data is used to target ads at consumers based on their history and preferences, and the better a company can target ads, the more it can charge advertisers to display those ads. It looks like the Federal Trade Commission is finally starting to realize that some companies go too far when collecting data and building a profile of Internet users to be sold to marketers, and consumers deserve to hav…

Samsung beats Apple to the punch, announces its own fitness platform
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

You won't be able to accuse Samsung of copying Apple this time! Per Business Insider, Samsung on Wednesday unveiled a new open platform called Samsung Architecture Multimedia Interactions (SAMI) that's designed to serve as a bridge between vital sensors that track your fitness activity and other devices such as smartphones and computers. Since the platform will be free to use, Samsung is clearly hoping to get it embedded into as many gadgets and sensors as possible, much as Google did with Android years ago. Apple is widely expected to announce its own fitness platform as part of its iOS 8 announcements at the Worldwide Developers Conference next week. Via BRG - Bo…

Speaking at Re/code’s conference in California, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella assured gamers that the company doesn’t plan to sell its Xbox division, despite what many people advise Microsoft to do. Furthermore, he said that the company doesn’t plan to sell its Bing search business either. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Apple is expected to announce its Beats acquisition this week, the New York Post has learned, and the iPhone maker will apparently acquire Dr. Dre’s company for less than initially expected. Apparently leaks in the press – not related to Dre’s acknowledgement of the deal recorded on video – convinced Apple lawyers to re-evaluate the purchase, and offer Beats “just” $3 billion, down $200 million from the previous offer. by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Apple still hasn't responded publicly to reports that hackers have breached Apple's iCloud system and hacked it in order to unlock stolen iPhones. While that doesn't bode well, the company did at least respond to a more recent series of reports of another iCloud breach that allowed hackers to digitally hijack iPhones and hold them hostage for a ransom. LG’s Quick Circle cover is a smart case for the G3 that allows you to interact with your device without actually flipping the cover open. We’ve got a hands on video showing the different clock faces, the quick camera shortcuts, the health and fitness integration, and the quick music player, among other things. Hit the break to see it in action. Click here to view the embedded video. Come comment on this article: Hands on with Quick Circle on t…

See LG’s “Simple is The New Smart” ad for the G3
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
If you watched the live stream of LG’s G3 announcement today, you likely heard how often they referred to the device as “simple.” The marketing slogan LG is going for with their new device is “Simple is The New Smart,” and it’s apparent when you look at things like the slimmed down camera interface and features like Smart Notice on the G3. Of course, creating these buzzwords isn’t going to sell many devices without some marketing behind it, so LG has released their first full-length ad for the G3, showing off just how simple and smart the device is. The video’s pretty slick and really sums up everything that’s great about the G3. You can watch the ad below. Wh…

Google bans external Chrome extension installations for Windows browser
by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies
Google’s been threatening it for some time now, but it’s finally happened. Windows users can no longer download and install third-party extensions that don’t come from the Web Store. Users of the stable Chrome build will now see that the browser won’t allow you to install those extensions. This probably won’t impact most people, but developers and experimenters will be disappointed to hear this news. If you’ve already side-loaded extensions, those will automatically become disabled today. If you want to continue using these, you must download the dev-channel of the browser. This news only impacts Windows users – Mac and Linux users can curiously continue side-loading a…

Another Flounder spotting hints at 64-bit Nexus 8 tablet
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Earlier this month some references to a Google device codenamed “Flounder” surfaced and added to the mounting evidence that Google was working on a successor to the Nexus 7 tablet. That information, since scrubbed from the source by Google, pointed to an HTC produced device. Now, some new references to Flounder hint at a 64-bit device. The discussion amongst developers that has surfaced mentions both the Flounder codename and the “Volantis” codename which was used in conjunction with Flounder on the previous occasion. In addition to references to a 64-bit ARM processor, one of the entries also mentions NVIDIA’s Tegra specifically. All of this suggests quite strongly th…

Samsung has found something even worse than talking to your watch to control it
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/b63444686cb88d45bd17cd6c934262a2.jpg As smartwatches struggle to find their place in a saturated device market, vendors are looking for new ways to attract potential customers. Even executives are willing to admit that the current lineup hasn't done much to impress consumers. The latest patent from Samsung imagines a new method of gesture controls for future smartwatches, using a built-in camera to track a user's hand motions. These touchless gesture controls would allow users to point at and capture an image of an object, unlock the device or even to power it down. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Why it’s impossible to make an NSA-proof computer
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
The past year has not been a great one for computer security. Last summer, Edward Snowden revealed how the NSA has been exploiting vulnerabilities to spy on people, Target suffered a massive security breach that exposed the credit card information for as much as a third of the American population, the Heartbleed bug was a major vulnerability found in the Internet’s most common encryption standard, and eBay just asked all 145 million of its customers to change their passwords after a security breach. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Interest in 3D food printing seems to be crashing pretty spectacularly
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies
The 3D printing market has seen an explosion of creativity in recent months and it's hard to say whether this stems from healthy demand or from a tech industry bubble that's still inflating at a frightening pace. Either way, the latest bloom of innovation comes from Oxford-based company called Dovetailed and it has just launched a 3D printer that "extends a molecular-gastronomy technique called spherification." To put it bluntly, the machine creates spherical blobs of jelly that adhere together forming raspberry-shaped delicacies. The company calls these concoctions "fresh and organic 3D fruits on demand," although they do sound a lot like plain old jellies. Continue …

Windows XP users can hack their registry to get updates, but Microsoft warns them not to
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
According to industry monitor Net Applications, Windows XP is still being used on 26.29% of all computers globally. As such, it stands to reason that people would look for workarounds now that Microsoft has stopped supporting the aged operating system, and will no longer issue security updates. It turns out that a simple tweak of Windows XP's registry allows XP users to continue getting security updates through 2019, as noted in a recent report from Betanews. Microsoft, however, has issued a statement warning users not to perform the "hack." Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
