Paranoid Android’s Peek app now available to purchase in the Play Store
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Paranoid Android’s Peek function is one of the coolest and most popular features of the ROM. It was so popular, in fact, that the functionality was ported into an app for any device on Android 4.4 to use. The only downside was that the app had to be sideloaded instead of being installed through the Play Store, so keeping it up to date would be a major headache. Skip ahead a couple of weeks, and Peek has jumped onto the Play Store with some refreshing improvements and extra functionality. Navigating and setting up the app looks much, much better than the sideloaded version, and there a few new features like blacklisting specific apps. The whole experience is improved…

Congresswoman says Google and Netflix are the real broadband moochers
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
People generally like Google and Netflix and they generally really, really hate their ISP. However, The Hill reports that Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) would like to correct your thinking: You see, it's broadband companies such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable who are the real innovative producers out there while the content-producing companies are "free-riding" moochers. Insider Sonny Dickson, who has provided accurate reports on unreleased iOS devices in the past, has compared an iPhone 6 mockup – similar to all the mockups seen in many pictures and videos posted online in the last few weeks – to all the iPhones released to date, showing how the device that changed the mobile landscape has evolved over the years. It looks like Apple might actually make Liquidmetal devices some day
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
About four years ago, Apple signed an agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies that gave it exclusive rights to the company's unique metal alloy material for use in consumer electronics products. To date, Apple has used the exciting new material to create exactly one thing that we know about: a SIM ejector tool. Apple hasn't given up on the material though, as a recent SEC filing reveals that Apple and Liquidmetal have extended their exclusive agreement for another year. Continue reading... Reports of the Surface mini’s death have been greatly exaggerated
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
The Surface mini project isn’t as dead as you might think, Neowin says, reporting that the device is real and may still launch in the future. The publication has confirmed that the mini tablet was excluded from the official Surface Pro 3 announcement following an “eleventh hour” decision – which apparently means as late as two days before the keynote – although it’s not clear whether or not Stephen Elop is to blame. However, it looks like Windows is waiting for one key feature to resurrect the Surface mini. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

What's better than a nice paid Android app? A nice free Android app. And what's better than a nice free Android app? Getting paid to download a free Android app. Amazon on Thursday announced a special Memorial Day promotion unlike like any we've seen in the past. Rather than simply offering a few nice paid apps for free like most app sales do, Amazon is offering to pay customers to download five specific free apps from the Amazon Appstore. Continue reading... The design is getting adjusted to match a users preferences. On the music front, Shazam will continuously push new content to the user, music videos and interviews included. by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Experiencing some excessive battery drain? Hangouts may be the culprit. With the 2.1 version of Hangouts, users have been noticing the app is really punishing battery life. On the Google Product Forums, people have started chatting about it and Google is listening. The engineers reportedly found a potential fix for the bug. When any fix will be issued, no one knows. But hopefully they do so before mass riots ensue. Damn you, Hangouts. Refreshed Fitbit Force may have leaked, plenty of displayable info included
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
At the beginning of the year, the Fitbit Force fitness tracker was causing an allergic reaction with some of its owners. In response to this, the product was recalled and has not returned since. A fresh leak shows just how hard Fitbit plans on working to make sure the refreshed wearable is. Keep in mind that the image does recognize this as a concept; therefore, take this (as any leak) with a grain of salt. Like all of Fitbit’s wearable products, this one will be a fitness tracker that tracks steps and distance traveled in addition to some deeper metrics. Also like before, this product can be a silent arm that wakes you and only you. A bit more information can be provi…

Hands-on videos of upcoming Galaxy S5 Active leak online
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
Now while we can’t promise that these leaked videos of the upcoming Galaxy S5 Active will stay online forever, they’re at least here for now. (We suggest you watch them while you still can before Samsung does something about it.) We showed you some leaks on Tuesday, but these are even better. The videos you’ll find after the break go into detail regarding the phone’s hardware and software. The first two videos offer a complete hands on of the phone (part 1 and 2), the third video shows off the phone’s OIS camera, the fourth demonstrates the exclusive applications that will come with the phone, and the fifth video compares the S5 Active with the S5. Motorola plays down rumored $249 price for Moto 360 on Google+, could still hold true
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
While we had originally heard that the Moto 360 would cost €249 (around $340 USD), it’s looking more and more that the number associated with the euros (249) is actually how much the smartwatch will cost in USD. Straight from Motorola’s watch-face design competition’s rules, we saw yesterday that the “average retail value” for the phone will be $249. However, Motorola spoke up today after Moto 360 fan Michal Tajchert commented on the rumored price on Google+. “According to new +Motorola Mobility contest terms moto 360 will cost 249$ (probably without taxes). That is a nice price! #moto360 #androidWear” But then Motorola Mobility’s Google+ account had somethin…

Oh no: Google wants to put ads on our thermostats, refrigerators and other appliances

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/38d86bcf1cbbaaeed0e1408282ee0713.jpg Motorola on Wednesday kicked off an interesting Moto 360 watchface design contest, which has as the main prize the company’s first Android Wear smartwatch. The contest rules also include the value of the device – listed at $249, which is in line with the European pricing for the device mentioned earlier this week – but the company has denied it on Google+. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/f8db6a2ae68be0dd0165837a5cfd17d5.jpg A Google SEC filing revealed that the company plans to deliver ads to more devices, including thermostats, refrigerators and other appliances, suggesting that Google’s Nest could soon show commercial to product buyers, even though the company pledged not to display ads on its products in the future, following the Google purchase. After ad-related details about Google’s SEC document were published, Nest’s co-founder said that the Nest thermostat will not get ads, just as previously stated, Re/code reports. Continue reading... Apple’s iMessage problem is worse than we thought
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple has a lot of very unhappy former iPhone users on its hands and it doesn't look like the problem is getting fixed anytime soon. For those of you who haven't heard, there's a major bug in Apple's iMessage software that will prevent you from receiving text messages from other iPhone users if you've switched to a phone that runs on a rival operating system. The problem arises when people switch from the iPhone to Android or Windows Phone without changing their phone number — apparently, Apple keeps that number in its data base and still has it marked as belonging to an iPhone user. This means that any text messages sent through iPhones to that number get stuck in Apple'…

Yet another hugely important reason Google Fiber is better than your broadband service
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Say what you want about Google being "evil" — I, for one, love how evil Google is — but the company has repeatedly shown us that its high-speed Internet service, Google Fiber, is quite possibly the least "evil" option in the country. In the two markets with access to Google Fiber, Google offers three tiers of home broadband service: 5Mbps/1Mbps service for free (that's right, free Internet), 1Gbps service for $70 per month, and 1Gbps service with 150 TV channels for $120 per month. Compared to widely available packages from leading ISPs and pay TV companies, those rates are amazing. And now, in light of the net neutrality issues that have reemerged in recent months, we…

Nest permanently eliminates wave to silence as part of recall
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Last month Nest Labs halted sales of their Nest Protect Smoke + CO alarms after testing indicated it may be possible the units could inadvertently be silenced via the “Nest Wave” feature. The Nest Wave feature was a way for users to wave their arm near the unit to temporarily silence the alarm rather than having to physically touch the unit. Nest’s testing indicated it was possible the units could misinterpret movements as attempts to silence the unit. The company, after working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has decided to proceed with a “recall” of all units. The recall does not require consumers to return their units. Instead, a “software remedy” …

Google Glass use has been linked to eye strain and fatigue
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Google Glass is a pretty weird piece of technology when you consider how it’s supposed to be used. The device sits just above your direct line of site, so actually using it involves adjusting your eyes upwards, which can be a little unnatural for most people. Well, now that Glass is available to the public, Google has spent a bit of money researching if there are any types of health or medical problems that are associated with using the smart glasses. This shouldn’t surprise anyone, but yes, initially Google Glass can cause some eye strain and fatigue. Dr. Eli Peli, the Harvard trained optometrist that Google hired to look into the effects of Glass on the human eye,…

Samsung boss Shin: The Galaxy S5 is innovative ‘despite the lack of any eye-popping technology’
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Samsung definitely wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel with the Galaxy S5 but Samsung's mobile boss J.K. Shin still thinks that you're not giving it nearly enough credit for being innovative. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Shin said that "despite the lack of any eye-popping technology," the Galaxy S5 delivers new features that its core customers want and love. Apple yanks top weed game from App Store as sleaze app popularity surges
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies

Over the past month, one obvious trend has taken the App Store by storm: sleaze apps. Make It Rain hit the top of the iPhone download chart in early may with gameplay features such as bribing federal judges. Toilet Time became the No. 2 app (so to speak) in mid-May by promising to let players to "use your pee to clean dirt from the toilet." And of course, there was the king of all sleaze apps: Weed Firm, a marijuana business simulator that was populated by such memorable characters as "a horny dancer." Continue reading... Samsung phones nobody wants to buy anymore are still banned in one country
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Even though Apple has beaten Samsung twice in the U.S. so far, it failed to obtain the significant win it needed to really deliver a big hit to its archenemy. In fact, Apple has also been found to infringe a Samsung patent in the second U.S. lawsuit between the two giants, which is apparently an asset for the Android maker in its reportedly renewed settlement negotiations. Some reports based on recent legal documents from the two companies' legal teams suggest that a settlement is still unlikely, however. Meanwhile, Apple has scored another minor victory against Samsung in Europe, where a Dutch court upheld a ban against older Samsung Android handsets. Continue read…
