Heathrow Airport says Samsung went off course with rebranding statements
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Last week Samsung issued a press release indicating they were “taking over” Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport. The branding campaign supposedly included special signage promoting the Samsung Galaxy S 5 that would appear in place of current signage, wayfinding, website and digital screens in the terminal for a two week period. Heathrow officials have issued a clarification of the campaign in response to complaints of possible confusion indicating the campaign is not as extensive as Samsung made it sound. A Heathrow spokesperson says, “Heathrow Terminal 5′s signage and passenger wayfinding has not changed. Samsung have rented advertising space in Terminal 5 with a …

Chrome Web Store now has an interface for mobile devices
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
It may not be fully functional, but it now exists. A user of Google+ discovered that the Chrome Web Store has an interface built specifically for mobile devices. The mobile interface shows details about the app or extension along with the gallery. Right now, everything is basic and categories do not yet exist. In fact, a homepage isn’t even there. Instead, you have to be redirected to the Chrome Web Store to see information regarding a specific app or extension. This means that Google is presumably working on making a fully working mobile site for the Chrome Web Store. Give it a try and let us know what you think. Bike routes in Google Maps get elevation profiles
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
This past week saw Google implement a few updates to their Google Maps platform, including Quick facts for some locations and extensive transportation data for public transportation options in the U.K. One more addition that has been added to Google Maps, at least on the desktop interface, is elevation profile data for bike routes. The elevation information is available for almost all bike routes in the countries where Google makes bike routes available. The only exception appears to be those routes that are virtually flat. Besides the graphical representation of the route, Google will display the total elevation change going up and going down. Oddly enough, Google …

iPhone user sues Apple over vanishing texts after iPhones swapped
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
An ex-iPhone user is suing Apple, claiming Apple’s messaging system interfered with the delivery of text messages after she switched from an iPhone to an Android device. According to Adrienne Moore, Apple’s iMessage retains SMS messages sent from other Apple users, and will not deliver them to her Samsung device. Moore says that people who switch from an iPhone to a non-Apple device are “penalized and unable to obtain the full benefits of their wireless-service contracts.” The lawsuit claims that Apple failed to disclose that switching to a non-Apple device would result in the interference. LG is inching closer to making a big splash with the G3. Will it make an impact? The Google Silver program might be launching sooner than we thought. Will we ever see a Nexus 6? Google has announced the schedule for next month’s Google I/O. Does it indicate a pending doom for Google+? Samsung is just about to announce another set of tablets, but does anyone care? It’s time to get caught up and get ready for what is sure to be another exciting week in the world of Android. Gui…

Multi-angle press renders of the LG G3 in white, gold surface
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Leading up to its May 23 announcement, there has been no shortage of LG G3 leaks. This time around there are multi-angle shots of the device in white and again in gold. Nothing new to note except that the gold looks very, very shiny. The only big piece of the puzzle still missing is software. But we want some surprises when the handset is announced, right? While the HTC One Mini 2 name will not be going to Verizon, the HTC One Remix will. Verizon is giving it a name change and today we have the first leaked press render of this handset. In the image above, you see the little HTC device within a case. When Big Red intends on releasing this, we do not know. Although, Verizon has really picked up the pace when it comes to adding a smartphone to its lineup. Google releases Hangouts plugin for Microsoft Outlook
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Google may not want to give Windows Phone access to Google Apps, but they do want Outlook users to take care of business. A Hangouts plugin has been released for Outlook. From Outlook’s Mail or Calendar, users can have a Hangout without the need to switch over to another service. This is a big win for Chrome OS devices. If business users were using Outlook, they would be out of luck. But now Hangouts is available as a plugin and the mess is gone. So video chatting is as seamless as ever for Outlook and Hangouts users alike. LG among the first to be part of Android Silver, handset could have 64-bit processor
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
News regarding Android Silver keeps heating up. On Friday, we learned that the Nexus program (for smartphones) is presumably gone with the addition of Android Silver. And earlier today we found out that the new initiative would be launched in February 2015. Now we have some information regarding one of Android Silver’s initial devices. It will come from none other than Google’s good friend LG. On Twitter, @evleaks shed some light on the LG handset. Specifically, he said it is “running a Qualcomm MSM8994, to be among first Silver devices.” Additionally, he noted that it is expected to be available through Sprint in the United States. What is that Sprint processor? It lo…

Today 3 photos of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime were leaked. The device, which is supposed to be released next month and will be a premium version of the Galaxy S5, will include a 1440 x 2560 display. The Galaxy S5 Prime will also have other upgrades, such as a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, as well as an Adreno 420 GPU. It will also feature 3GB of RAM rather than the 2GB of RAM found on the Galaxy S5. Not only that, but the device is expected to have an aluminum body, which many were hoping would be shown on the standard Galaxy S5. HTC working on two entry-level smartphones to join the Desire family
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The HTC One (M8) is a very well-respected device due to its premium build quality, but that doesn’t mean HTC will not target the entry-level market anyways. The company just announced the HTC One Mini 2 and the Desire 610 is on the way. However, that is not anywhere near entry-level. A new leak claims that the company is working on two handsets that would join the Desire family. This is HTC’s line that has decent specifications, but clearly not anywhere near the One (M8). The two handsets are still being developed and the codenames are A1 and V2. That is all of the information we have at the moment, but we will surely learn more about these two over time. HTC has…

Original HTC One (M7) Developer Edition/unlocked models receiving update
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies
Good news for HTC One (M7) owners — you might have thought with the release of the M8, HTC forgot about you. But now we’re receiving news that the developer edition and unlocked models of the phone are receiving a pretty large update (667 MB), including Sense 6. However, because of the device’s hardware limitations, motion gestures and the advanced DuoCamera effects like UFocus, Foregrounder, Seasons and Dimensions Plus are not included in the update. This was expected though, because the M7 only has a single camera on the back, and does not feature a depth sensor like the M8 currently does. Let us know if you receive an update and how it goes. Android Silver slated for February 2015 arrival
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
It looks like we have about nine months to go before Android Silver absorbs the Nexus program. Google is expected to launch Android Silver in February of next year. This news comes just one day after we learned that the Nexus 6 does not exist and the Nexus program is done for. The Nexus program was originally targeted at developers, but seems to move on to a more mainstream audience over time. Android Silver would be an initiative that has Google partnering with manufacturers to release devices that run stock Android. Google would even handle some advertising, something that a Google Play Edition device has never seen. Nexus devices get advertised, but nowhere near the…

Quest Visual, the makers of Word Lens, an application which uses your device’s camera to translate words on signs/books/manuals (pretty much whatever) into English, or even other languages, has been acquired by Google. We can only imagine that Google hopes to make use of the patents and technology that Quest Visual has in order to improve their Google Translate product and perhaps even implement some of this technology into other Google apps as well. Hit the break below to see the app in use. Click here to view the embedded video. More to come soon. Design aficionado Ivy Ross to head Google Glass team May 19
by Guest Harrison Kaminsky- 0 replies

Google will be bringing in a new mind to head the Glass team, and she might not be what you would have expected. Ivy Ross, who previously worked with major companies involved in design and self-branding (Calvin Klein, Swatch, Coach, Mattel, Bausch & Lomb, Gap and Art.com) will be leading the project come this Monday. She certainly brings a different angle to the project, and many would argue it’s exactly what Google needs. The search giant needs to find a way to make Glass “cool,” and Ross might be the perfect person to do that. You can expect lots of future partnerships between Google and major fashion/accessory companies, much like what we’ve seen from the par…

Apple reaches a major patent truce with Google… but it’s still going to keep suing Samsung
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
The great mobile patent wars are finally coming to an end, at least as far as battles between Google and Apple are concerned. Per The Wall Street Journal, the two companies announced on Friday night that they were dropping all remaining patent suits that they have against one another and will instead work to push for reforms in United States patent law. The new patent truce doesn't mean the two companies will start licensing one another's patents, however, and Apple says that the truce won't change anything when it comes to its ongoing lawsuits against Samsung even though its last effort at squeezing money from the Korean smartphone titan was not nearly as successful as i…

Nexus 6 said to be nonexistent, Android Silver hinted as replacement
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
We have been hearing about Android Silver for some time, an initiative that would effectively replace the Nexus program. Simply put, Android Silver would have Google partnering with manufacturers to produce high-end devices that run stock Android. Today, it seems that the Nexus 5 could be the final smartphone from the program. On Twitter, @evleaks noted that a Nexus 6 does not exist and said “Farewell, Nexus.” After that, he did say a silver lining can be found. If you are not catching on, that presumably means the Android Silver initiative does exist and will be given some light soon. Will we hear about it at Google I/O in June? There is a very good chance. There…

Updated LG home screen leaks, could be used for G Pad Series tablets
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
An image of an updated LG user interface, specifically the home screen, leaked yesterday. Originally, it was deemed as belonging to the upcoming LG G3; however, the image was shortly pulled after. The questionable part comes in because QPair’s presence. That is an application that allows calls from an LG phone to be taken with an LG tablet. So this could actually be a leaked screenshot from the upcoming LG G Pad Series tablets. That is merely an assumption. Or it could all be a mistake and this belongs to nothing. If this does indeed belong to an LG device, we are looking at the addition of a dedicated multitasking button. To the right of that is a button for pulling d…

With Google I/O getting closer and closer many are getting very excited for the event. Today Google released its full schedule for the event, showing us exactly what we should expect. First off we can see that Google will continue the trend of only giving one keynote address, and this year it will only be two hours. Next, we can see that Google will be hosting a “What’s New in Android” event, suggesting that a new version of Android will be revealed. Another important area to focus on seems to include Android Wear. Motorola and Apple settle smartphone patent litigation
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Apple and Motorola Mobility today agreed to settle all patent litigation, ending one of the higher profile lawsuits in tech. In a joint statement Apple and Motorola mentioned that the settlement does not include a cross license to their patents. The statement also mentioned that Apple and Google has agreed to work together towards some areas of patent reform. Apple and a number of companies that use Android have filed countless lawsuits against each other, with Apple arguing that Android phones copy their iPhones. The companies informed the court that the cases should be dismissed. Despite this the deal does not apply to the Apple-Samsung litigation. The lawsui…

New campaign aims to make surfing the web miserably slow for FCC employees
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

If there's one good thing that's come from the Federal Communications Commission's hugely controversial to allow for Internet "fast lanes," it's that it's inspired several brilliant high-profile pranks aimed at giving the FCC a taste of its own medicine. Wired now reports that Portland-based software developer Kyle Drake has created code that people can put on their websites that will detect whenever someone with an FCC-associated IP address is trying to access their page and then slow down their loading times to dial-up speeds. When the FCC employees try logging onto one of the websites that has added the code, they will be given a message telling them that they will onl…

More key LG G3 features revealed in new leaks
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
LG is getting ready to launch its next flagship handset, the LG G3, this month, much earlier than initially expected. The company is apparently trying to both better compete against the recently released Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8), and also to avoid direct competition with the iPhone 6 that will launch next quarter, which is when the G3 was expected to hit stores. Thus, it’s not surprising to see more key details revealed about the handset, with just over a week to go until the G3 media event kicks off. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Cable companies just had their best quarter since 2011
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies

Cable companies are losing cable subscribers who have decided to cut the cord, but it now appears they are losing these customers at a much slower rate. According to IHS, cable companies lost 132,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2014, which marks the least number of customers cable has shed since the first quarter of 2011. That figure was also down from the 265,000 subscribers pay TV companies lost in the first quarter last year. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
