Tech companies still hate the FCC’s net neutrality plan
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler kept insisting that people would be more open to his plan once they actually read it. However, now that it's been unveiled and made available to everyone, no one likes it any better. The Wall Street Journal notes that Amazon and Netflix have both released official statements reiterating their opposition to letting ISPs create "fast lanes" that would let them charge content providers more to ensure their data gets delivered more quickly. by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Living in the desert no longer has to mean being parched for drinking water. MIT has posted a video this month that shows how some researchers from its School of Engineering are working with researchers at the Pontificial University of Chile in Santiago to design a system for collecting fresh drinking water from fog that regularly rolls through Chile's otherwise arid coastal region. Samsung announces durable Galaxy Tab 4 Education built just for schools
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Another tablet from Samsung has emerged, but this one is not for everyone. This one is just for educational purposed. The Galaxy Tab 4 Education is a 10.1-inch tablet that is powered by Google Play for Education, so it is bundled with a ton of features to help students and teachers. This tablet is special, though, because it has a rugged construction since students are not exactly the most reliable people when it comes to handling electronic devices. Samsung is also using this tablet to launch Samsung School, a service that will let teachers monitor students’ usage and share their display on a larger one. Specifications are not really the crowned jewel here, but we hav…

Review: Seagate Backup Plus Slim and Fast mobile hard drives
by Guest Darren Murph- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/c5c9bdc4908586aa5d174e6752e0071d.jpg Fast. Fast and cheap. In a nutshell, that describes Seagate’s latest duo of mobile hard drives. In a world where SSDs are still (unfortunately) too pricey for most, mechanical hard drives are (mercifully) becoming increasingly affordable. The thought of carrying around 2TB of photos, videos, and love letters that you just can’t part with for under $120 would’ve been a pipe dream just a couple of years ago. As the latest race to the bottom plays out, Seagate’s 2TB Backup Plus Slim is a compelling option. It strips away practically everything except a USB 3.0 connector, but fancies itself u…

Microsoft sold 110,000 Xbox One units and 76,000 Xbox 360 units last month, a performance that wasn't strong enough to beat PS4 sales. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Looking for a reason why people hate their cable companies? Well, there are likely several reasons but one of them is undoubtedly the constant stream of price increases and fees that are taking out more and more of consumers' wallets every year. A major new study from the Federal Communications Commission has found that basic cable prices increased by 6.5% throughout 2012 while expanded basic cable prices rose by 5.1% over the same period. In contrast, the general rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index throughout 2012 was just 1.6%, meaning that basic cable prices rose at more than four times the rate of inflation in 2012 while expanded basic cable pric…

It is possible that both are variants of the same phone for different markets, however. The rumors and pictures of the red variant of the HTC One M8 have been plentiful over the past few days. It was all but confirmed, as we’ve seen 3D images, leaked photos, and more. Now, Jeff Gordon, head of communications at HTC, has announced the new color for the device via Twitter. The Galaxy S 5 Prime might have just been Bluetooth certified
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
While the Galaxy S 5 was the procedural next step in the S line, many folk thought that the phone was somewhat lackluster in terms of being an upgrade over last year’s model. Rumors had the device running at least a 2k display and a metal body. As rumors continued to surface, it was suggested that Samsung would be readying a new line of premium phones that would later be named the Galaxy F line. However, the announcement for the Galaxy S 5 came and went without mention of the Galaxy F series. However new rumors continued to arise that Samsung was readying a Galaxy S 5 Prime and as we continue along, we’re seeing more and more rumors pop up. According to Bluetooth…

Those in the NBA are big fans of the new tech that is Google Glass. The Sacramento Kings were the first of the NBA to incorporate the device. Well the Pacers are looking to incorporate the device while also looking to expand functionality of Glass during their games by expanding the amount of services that take advantage of it. Glass users will be able to view the game courtside regardless of where they sit. Texts can be sent to Glass users giving them directions and alerts letting them know when the team and this courtside experience is about to go live. Roy Hibbert has been the biggest supporter of Glass for the Pacers, but there are others that are embracing the tec…

Does Android crush iOS when it comes to usability? The answer may lie in a single screenshot
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously vowed to destroy Android because it is a stolen product. "I don't want your money," Jobs is said to have told Google's Eric Schmidt during a meeting. "If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all I want." Whether or not you agree with Jobs in a broad sense, there is simply no denying that these two mobile platforms are very different in a number of key areas. And according to one mobile expert, a single screenshot shows that Android is years ahead of the iPhone and iOS when it comes to usability. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Geniu…

Here’s why the OnePlus One only costs $300 despite having killer specs
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
How can OnePlus sell the 16GB version its OnePlus One flagship phone for just $300 off contract despite featuring killer specs that include a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM? Well, assuming that the phone exists and isn't just an empty cardboard box, it seems to be because OnePlus has decided to forgo both a big marketing budget and profitability for the time being. In an interview with TechRadar, OnePlus CEO Peter Lau said that his company is "selling the phone at cost" and is relying on word-of-mouth and interaction with its community of fans to help promote the device. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/f1e58526471a4634f689a99af8a4ea31.jpg In the early days of the Android platform, smartphones like the G1 were painfully slow and clunky. Handsets struggled to open apps, freezes were expected, and crashes were regular occurrences. Fast forward to 2014, and Android is an entirely different story. Google's code has enjoyed years of optimizations and processors and other components have improved dramatically. Even most low-end and mid-range Android phones run smoothly in most normal situations now. Sometimes, however, things slow down. It can be incredibly frustrating — even more so than it was back in Android's early days, beca…

You’ll soon be able to tell Google to forget the dirty secrets that were spilled online
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Google received a potentially devastating blow in Europe earlier this week, where a court ruled in favor of the individual’s right to protect his or her privacy, and the right to be forgotten on the Internet. Essentially, this ruling gives the power to any European Internet user to ask the search giant to remove links that point to websites that contain personal details. And it looks like hundreds of people are already demanding that certain links should be removed from the Google Search index. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Financial Times writer Simon Kuper has now proposed six ways that we can make using email a less miserable experience, although some of them will require changing the general etiquette for the medium in ways that will make it less time-consuming.
