This spectacular ad shows why Samsung is crushing every other Android vendor
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Samsung on Tuesday released a new ad that’s part of its football-themed #Galaxy11 series of commercials that feature well-known football stars, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others, for the purpose of promoting some of its recently launched Galaxy-branded devices. After a long hiatus since its last #Galaxy11 ad, Samsung has released a four-minute video in which it shows the selected football players in training modes, preparing for the ultimate confrontation with an alien race that invaded Earth. The video is quite fun to watch, as the chosen players prove why they have been selected to defend our planet from the football-loving alien species. But de…

Apple has a lot of work to do if it hopes to turn Beats Music into a music streaming powerhouse in the same league as Pandora or Spotify. The Guardian reports that newly leaked documents show that Beats Music had only 111,000 paying subscribers at the end of March, which needless to say puts it far, far, far behind other popular music streaming services. Spotify, in contrast, has 6 million paying subscribers and 24 million monthly active users while a survey conducted earlier this year showed that Pandora is still by far the most used music streaming service on the web. Obviously, integrating Beats Music into Apple’s iTunes Store and giving it a default app on the iPhone …

This is how much time the average gamer spends playing games every week
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Now that anyone with a smartphone and a commute could be considered a gamer, it’s harder than ever to separate the casual players from the die-hard loyalists. In its latest report, The NPD Group describes “core gamers” as any individuals who spend more than five hours a week playing games on a home console (such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), a Windows PC or a Mac. By these standards, there are currently over 34 million core gamers in the United States, and they are playing video games for an average of 22 hours every week. That sounds like a lot, but keep in mind, gaming can be a diet… of sorts! “Core gamers are really the lifeblood of the industry, spending trem…

Anyone in the U.S. can now buy Google Glass (but it’s still in beta and still $1,500)
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

After offering its Google Glass wearable to just about anyone in the U.S. for one day only last month, Google seems ready to sell the $1,500 gadget to more people in the region. However, the Google Glass product is still in beta, and it’s still as expensive as before. Furthermore, while Google is extending the Google Glass purchase program, the device will still be available only to U.S. buyers. “Last week we told you we’d be trying out new ways to find Explorers,” Google wrote on the Google Glass Google+ page. “Well, we weren’t kidding. We learned a lot when we opened our site a few weeks ago, so we’ve decided to move to a more open beta. We’re still in the Explorer P…

Motorola has released a new app to the Google Play store that is intended specifically for their devices. Motorola Alert lets users set up a contact list of specific individuals to be contacted in case of an emergency. When the app is triggered, it will start to send out periodic notifications to the emergency contacts. The notifications will include location information, so those receiving the messages will not only know the user needs help, they can find them. On a less urgent level, Motorola Alert will also let users set locations like Home, Work or School. Whenever you arrive or leave one of these pre-defined locations, the app will send a notification. Public transportation in the UK just got a whole lot easier thanks to Google Maps’ latest update. In an impressive move, the app now can access all times and routes for every train, bus, tram and ferry in the region — almost 17,000 different routes. Google Maps’ project manager, David Tattersall, said, “You’ll now know when the next trip is departing, how many stops and how far your walk is between each station. You can also pick your preferred method of travel and whether you’d rather walk less or make fewer transfers, so you can compare and choose the best option for you.” Source: Pocket Link Come comment on this article: Google Maps receives update in UK,…

LG gives us our first official look at the G3 in a slick new teaser video
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

We’ve seen a lot of the LG G3 through leaked pictures but now LG is ready to give us our first official glimpse of the device. LG on Tuesday posted a teaser video that shows off the G3′s metallic frame, its revamped rear buttons, its new camera and what look to be some of the slimmest side bezels we’ve yet seen in a smartphone. LG is launching the G3 at a special event in London on May 27th and all the leaks we’ve seen of the device indicate that LG has really upped its game to compete with Samsung and HTC after disappointing us last year with the LG G2. Reported specs for the device include a 5.5-inch quad-HD display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, 2GB of RAM, 3…

Galaxy S5 Prime release date reportedly set for the middle of June
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
It’s not often that electronics companies get a second chance at making a first impression, but that might be what Samsung is looking to do with the Galaxy S5 Prime later this summer. As expected, the Galaxy S5 launched to positive reviews and impressive sales numbers, but unlike previous years, no one seemed to be going out of their way to shout the praises of Samsung’s latest flagship. From a few questionable design choices to the relatively tame specifications, the S5 just couldn’t wow Android users as Galaxy phones had in years past. Samsung could change all of that with an upgraded device, which is why the S5 Prime is such an intriguing proposition. South Korean s…

Here’s what HBO’s Game of Thrones would look like inside Super Mario World
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Three years ago, Game of Thrones blew away viewers with what immediately became one of the most iconic openings in television history. Paired with an epic score, the introduction to Westeros was both informative and imaginative, spanning continents while focusing in on some of the key locations of the story. The opening matched the tone of HBO’s show flawlessly, which makes even more delectable. With the help of an 8-bit remix of the ubiquitous theme, NicksplosionFX has recreated the opening scene inside of the Super Nintendo classic, Super Mario World. From Yoshi’s Island to Bowser’s Castle, the Mushroom Kingdom isn’t quite as vast as Westeros, but the parody is spot …

Counterfeit iPad chargers are cheap for a reason
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
Apple is often criticized for selling its chargers at a high profit margin, especially when you can easily find an incredibly cheap version on eBay. Well, it turns out there’s a reason these counterfeiters can make such cheap chargers. Engineer Ken Shirriff tore down an Apple-branded iPad charger and a counterfeit version, and he found that the counterfeit version skimps on power quality, construction, and safety. The counterfeit charger, which advertised itself as a 10W charger, was in fact just a 5W charger. Shirriff explains how chargers work in incredible detail and accompanies his teardown with pictures that show the generally lower-quality production value of the…

NSA reportedly implants backdoors into U.S.-made servers and routers for foreign markets
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
A new report from The Guardian reveals that NSA has allegedly been tampering with U.S.-made electronic equipment including servers, routers and other network devices that are exported to foreign markets in order to insert backdoor surveillance malware, which can be later activated to spy on networks. “The agency then implants backdoor surveillance tools, repackages the devices with a factory seal and sends them on,” The Guardian writes. “The NSA thus gains access to entire networks and all their users. The [NSA leaked] document gleefully observes that some “SIGINT [short for signal intelligence] tradecraft … is very hands-on (literally!)”.” The publication obtained …

AT&T’s LTE with an equipped General Motors vehicle will cost $10 per month
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Putting a car with your AT&T Mobile Share Value plan. It is possible. For the same price that it costs to add a tablet, AT&T will let you add your General Motors vehicle. To start, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu will be the vehicle to get if you want AT&T’s LTE on the road. By the end of this year, though, General Motors plans on having more than 30 cars capable of having an LTE connection across its subdivisions. The amount of data you get varies, but OnStar subscribers get a little bit of a discount. OnStar subscribers can get 200MB of data per month for $5 or 1GB for $15. Don’t have OnStar? Those plans will cost $10 and $20, respectively. There are also 3GB a…

Gmail app first to make the 1 billion installs plateau on Google Play
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Last fall Google announced their Android platform had broken through the one billion activations mark. With some applications that tend to be on every Android smartphone shipped around the world, it was only a matter of time before an app achieved the same feat and hit the 1 billion installs level. It appears this month that Google’s own Gmail app has reached that lofty goal as the entry in Google Play now lists the number of installs as somewhere between 1 billion and 5 billion. According to AppBrain, this occurred on May 6th. Although Gmail has reached the 1 billion mark in terms of installs, it should be noted that Gmail is usually installed by default on most Andro…

Samsung external battery pack raises the design bar for accessories
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
When Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 last year, one of the new design cues was the faux leather and stitching treatment for the back cover. We have since seen that same design extended to other devices. Samsung has now released an accessory, at least in India, that uses this same faux leather look. A new external battery pack available from Samsung’s online store for India uses the faux leather to go with a couple other nice enhancements. The battery itself is a whopping 6000mAh which should provide plenty of juice to help get a user through a day or two of use with their device. Samsung has also figured out how to include a built-in charging cable so users …

Nexus 6 and Nexus 8 mentioned in latest Chromium code
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Only a week after the Nexus 8 codename “Flounder” was found in the Chromium source code, we now also have reference to the Nexus 6. The code can still be seen on the Code Review page under the new code section. The Nexus 8 has been the subject of rumors before, and is expected to be made by HTC and have an 8″ screen, hence the “8″. Apart from this, not too much is known about the device. Almost nothing is known about the Nexus 6. If the pattern of the Nexus 4 and 5 remains, then the Nexus 6 will likely be based on the next LG flagship device. The LG G3 is expected to be announced later this year and have a 5.5″ display, so it may be based on that. Despite this, si…

Google Glass available for anyone in the US for $1500
by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies

When Google opened up Google Glass for anyone who wanted a paid a few weeks ago for one day only, they sold like hotcakes. If you missed out on their limited supply, you’re in luck. Google announced today via their Google+ profile that they “decided to move to a more open beta,” opening sales of the Glass headset to anyone in the US who has $1500 to spare. An “open beta” seems to mean that Glass is on its way to a full consumer release, although the headset is clearly still in beta. Small steps. Although we don’t know exactly when Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Prime will release, we at least have a sweet new concept video that will whet our appetite for the rumored metal version of Samsung’s flagship phone. The new concept, designed by My Gadgetic, imagines a new device that delivers the best of both worlds: Samsung’s beautiful displays matched with the HTC One (M8)’s incredible build quality. In fact, stylistically the concept borrows so much from HTC’s latest flagship phone that we get the feeling HTC would rush to phone up its lawyers if Samsung ever released anything like it. Not only does the concept use the two major grey and silver colors we see in the One (M8) b…
