ISPs are shamelessly trying to scare you away from supporting net neutrality
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
It was all going so, so well for American ISPs. Not only did they have a former cable lobbyist as head of the Federal Communications Commission, but he was even planning to push through a new proposal that would have given them the power to create separate Internet fast lanes where they could charge more to Internet companies to ensure their traffic got delivered faster. And to top it all off, many of them were planning to engage in a huge wave of mergers that would give them even more power over the broadband and/or pay TV markets, from Comcast-Time Warner Cable to Sprint-T-Mobile to AT&T-DirecTV. But alas for them, it seems that America’s ISPs have finally overre…

Here’s the best Nexus 7 deal money can buy
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Google may be ready to roll out new Nexus hardware this year, but that doesn’t mean potential Android tablet buyers should forget last year’s models. In fact, Google and Asus are currently offering U.K. residents a very interesting Nexus 7 deal on the 16GB model: each purchase comes with a free £50 Google Play store credit, and is valid through June 1. Buyers who will purchase their 16GB Nexus 7 (2013) unit from either Asda, Carphone Warehouse, Currys or Tesco will then be able to apply online to get their gift card. The 16GB Nexus 7 (2013) model sells for £169 from Carphone Warehouse, with the retailer already listing the special Google Play Credit offer on its websit…

Guess which Android app just became the first to reach 1 billion downloads
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

As far as Google is concerned, Android exists in its current form for one reason and one reason alone: to put Google services in front of as many eyes as possible. The mobile platform has been remarkably efficient at achieving this goal, and now we have yet another example of just how efficient it is. Google’s Gmail application has just become the first app in the Google Play app store to reach the 1 billion download milestone. The Play app store displays a range of downloads for each Android app and Gmail recently became the first ever to cross into the 1,000,000,000 to 5,000,000,000 range. According to Android Police, app tracker AppBrain shows that the milestone …

First Titanfall DLC trailer shows off three killer new maps
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Respawn Entertainment took to YouTube on Monday to reveal the first official gameplay footage of the upcoming Expedition DLC for the enormous popular first-person shooter Titanfall. The first DLC pack will include three new multiplayer maps: Swampland, Runoff and Wargames. Swampland appears to offer more verticality than the standard maps, filled with talls trees to jump between while evading Titan fire. Runoff features a more traditional layout, separated by buildings, walkways and trenches. Wargames is the most interesting of the three, drawing inspiration from the initial training simulation that players are presented with at the start of the game. Expedition is …

Google’s Nexus 6 phone and Nexus 8 tablet have been confirmed
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Each year Android fans start wondering what Google’s next Nexus devices will be called, and whether Google will correlate naming schemes to display size or not. This year, Google was expected to launch an 8.9-inch high-end tablet that will either be called Nexus 8 or Nexus 9, and a Nexus 6 smartphone likely based on the LG G3. Apparently two of these three product names have been confirmed in Chromium Code Review. SmartDroid.de reports that Florian Kiersch and Carsten Knobloch have found the Nexus 8 and Nexus 6 mentioned in Chromium Code Review, although other details are not available for these devices yet. These mentions can always be faked, but they could also indic…

Here’s why Apple needs the iPhone 6 to be more curved than square
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
While iPhone fans trying to guess what Apple is working on for the next iPhone have posted many wild concepts online showing iPhone 6 designs that featured curved, flexible or wraparound displays (such as the one above), it looks like the iPhone maker is actively studying such a possibility for future models. AppleInsider has discovered an Apple patent that details a wraparound display for future iPhone models, which would help Apple replace the physical mute and volume buttons found on the left side of the iPhone with a touchscreen that would offer multi-purpose buttons, as well as tactile feedback to the user. Filed in late September 2011 and titled “Electronic devic…

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s: Design, size and color options extensively compared in new video
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
In addition to comparing the iPhone 6 dummy units obtained from Sonny Dickson to current Android flagship devices, including the HTC One (M8) and the Galaxy S5, 9to5Mac has also posted a second video in which it shows the differences between the mockups and the iPhone 5s when it comes to design, size and color options. The publication has taken an extensive look at the Space Gray and Gold iPhone 6 dummy units, comparing them to the latest iPhone as well as the fifth-generation iPod touch, in order to highlight the huge design changes Apple is apparently working on for its next-gen iPhones. The dummy units are consistent with other similar non-functional devices spot…

Good work, Microsoft: You’ve finally sold me on the Xbox One
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
At this time last year, I was practically a guaranteed Xbox One customer. I’ve loved my Xbox 360 for years and I just couldn’t imagine making the switch to a rival platform, especially since I always thought that the Xbox 360 had better exclusives than the PlayStation 3, lead by the highly acclaimed Halo series. But then Microsoft made a truly bizarre set of public relations mistakes that made me seriously question whether or not I wanted to spend $499 on its newest console. The most obvious blunders came when Microsoft revealed restrictive new online connectivity requirements and DRM policies for disc-based games without explaining why it needed to implement them to m…

New leak offers surprising details about Windows’ future
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Microsoft may already be working on quite a few different Windows-related products and some of them are pretty surprising. Myce rdirects our attention to a leaked image posted by a well-known Chinese leaker on Neowin showing that Microsoft is already working on several Windows 9 builds including a mobile Windows Phone 9 version, and could soon launch a cloud-based operating system dubbed Windows 365, a name that’s similar to its Office 365 subscription-based productivity suite. In addition to Windows 9 and Windows 365 mentions, the leak lists current products, including Office 2013 and Windows 8.1, but also upcoming updates, such as Windows 8.1 Update 2 and Office 2015…

Is today the end of the flip phone and feature phone? Motorola seems to think so with the introduction of the Moto E, which is made to last and priced for all. Priced at $129 / £89 off contract, this could change the game. LG will launch Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate earphones on May 18th
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
LG’s answer to the growing popularity of fitness trackers like the Gear Fit and the Fitbit is their Lifeband Touch, which they announced back at CES. It still has the OLED touch screen for checking notifications and answering calls, and it’ll use vibrations to alert you to text messages, emails, etc. It can track your fitness records with MyFitnessPal or Runkeeper, but LG is launching their own fitness app, too. Alongside the Lifeband Touch, LG will also be launching Heart Rate headphones. These wireless Bluetooth headphones will function like normal headphones, but they’ll also be able to check your heart rate based on blood flow in your ear, and, if combined with …

Samsung’s ‘Glass Gear’ could be unveiled in September, run Tizen
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Samsung has always been known to have its presence felt in many categories. One that it has yet to enter is smart glasses. Right now, there are really no standouts until Google finally releases the consumer version of Glass. Everyone isn’t just going to sit and wait. It looks like Samsung’s could be announced later this year. Like we previously heard, it sounds like the wearable will be announced at IFA 2014 in September. This is the same event that Samsung used to announce the Galaxy Note 3. The device would be known as Samsung Glass Gear and it would not run Android Wear. Instead, Samsung would be putting Tizen to work. This should be of no surprise as Samsung’s Gear…

Galaxy S 5 Prime may retail for $880 at launch
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
The Galaxy S 5 Prime is one of the most anticipated devices this year, and although we’ve heard a ton of rumors about specs, build materials, and even the launch date, we haven’t really heard much about pricing. Well, according to the latest leak, Samsung is planning on launching the S 5 Prime exclusively in Korea (at first) for KRW 900,000, which converts to about $880 in American money. Unlocked smartphones are typically expensive, but even compared to other devices, that’s pricey. Obviously, the device will drop in cost as it becomes more widely available, but if you want to get one of these right at launch, you’re going to pay quite a bit of money for the device…

How Apple blew its shot to rule the cloud
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/6c5b1774ccaaa45786ac907876d872aa.jpg Although “Apple is doomed” stories are overblown and ridiculous, that doesn’t mean there aren’t areas where Apple has significantly fallen behind the competition. One of these areas is in the realm of online services, where Apple has failed to develop anything close in scope or quality to Microsoft’s Office 365 or Google’s Google Maps. ZDNet’s Ed Bott shows us that it didn’t have to be this way — in 2010, then-Apple CEO Steve Jobs sent out an email explaining how significant cloud computing would become in the coming years and urged Apple to get out in front of this trend to “further lock…

This is the cheapest true Android handset money can buy
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Nokia has launched some more than affordable Android handsets at MWC 2014 in February, but they’re not exactly running an operating system that’s infused with all the Google services Android users expect to find on board. That’s why the Moto E can be considered the cheapest true Android handset, now that it’s official. Motorola on Tuesday took the wraps of its newest addition to the Moto family of Android smartphones, the Moto E, which was already seen in various reports preceding the event. The Moto E is also the first handset announced after Google sold Motorola to Lenovo. The phone isn’t a flagship device, and it’s not a mid-range device either. But it’s a handse…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/f06511c9479c64c3c62363b2ae0948a2.jpg In addition to unveiling its most affordable Android smartphone yet, Motorola on Tuesday also announced a new Moto G model, the Moto G 4G LTE, which will offer users faster data speeds. The LTE version of the Moto G does not have any other new features, except for 4G and microSD support. As expected, the Moto G 4G LTE model is more expensive than the 3G-only version, and will cost $219 without a contract. Unfortunately for users who want more built-in storage, the Moto G 4G LTE will only be available with 8GB of memory, although unlike the 3G model, the 4G model does have microSD support.…

Microsoft to reportedly let Xbox users watch Netflix without a Live Gold subscription
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
It looks like Microsoft is about to make another very welcome change to the Xbox One. Unnamed sources tell Ars Technica that Microsoft is planning to drop its requirement that Xbox users have a paid Live Gold subscription to access Netflix and Hulu on their consoles. That said, Ars’s sources say that Microsoft is considering putting other services behind its paywall to make up for the loss of Netflix and Hulu as major incentives for users to sign up for Live Gold. Microsoft has come under pressure to lift the paywall for popular video streaming apps since rival Sony doesn’t require any subscriptions for users to watch them on the PS4 and other set-top boxes such as …

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/6f6a76ed9f0d8841f5a6fe0e47586289.jpg Following the countless leaks showing images of iPhone 6 dummy units, 9to5Mac has obtained two such mockups with the help of Sonny Dickson, a source of accurate Apple leaks in the past, and compared them on video to two of the best Android smartphones currently available in stores, the HTC One (M8) and the Galaxy S5. Just like other dummy iPhone 6 units that were recently photographed in China, the mockups 9to5Mac got feature bigger displays and a thinner profile than the iPhone 5s. These non-functional iPhone 6 units resemble the iPod touch’s design more so than the iPhone 5s, including …

Moto X+1 coming to Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T with leather backs
by Guest Brendan Lynch- 0 replies
It seems as though we just got a little more information regarding the specifics for Motorola’s upcoming Moto X+1. Tucked inside the XML files on Motorola’s website were lines of code that revealed the upcoming device will sport optional leather backs and will be coming to Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. Last week, a page went live (and later taken down) on Motorola’s website with a very clear mention of the Moto X+1 on AT&T. Additionally, the page include the title “FLEXR2”, a logical name as the original Moto X was internally referred to as “FLEXR1”. Later that week, we also got word confirming that the already existing back materials and colors of the Moto X will a…

by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

The Verizon variant of the Galaxy S4 finally received KitKat last month, and no it looks like it’s the Note 3‘s turn. Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are reporting that the update is available through Samsung Kies and through the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant. While it is good that the device is finally getting the update, it’s a little unfortunate that it’s only available if you plug your device into your computer. AT&T readying $50 billion purchase for DirecTV, could be announced next week
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Thought the possible Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger was big? AT&T is reportedly readying a $50 billion check to acquire DirecTV. That is $5 billion more than the aforementioned merger. The deal would be an absolute win for AT&T and forge its way into new territory. Adding DirecTV to its portfolio would move the company higher up in the ranks of bundling TV, phone, and internet services. While AT&T does have U-Verse for TV, it is nothing compared to DirecTV’s offering to more than 30 million subscribers. Verizon, AT&T’s main wireless competitor, has FiOS expanding across the country. In a way, Sprint almost got involved with TV when Dish Network active…

by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/47c1ce78cd86aa7dd135861de3db4bda.jpg People buy smartphones for all different reasons but it seems that having a strong battery has become the top reason for many buyers. IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo has posted a chart from a recent IDC survey showing that 56% of Android buyers, 49% of iPhone buyers and 53% of Windows Phone buyers said that battery life was a key reason they bought their particular device. In this way, battery life trumped even ease of use, which 33% of Android users, 39% of iPhone users and 38% of Windows Phone users said was a key factor in choosing their smartphone. Interestingly, just 25% of Android users…
