Details leak about upcoming Samsung Galaxy S 5 Prime, Galaxy S 5 Mini, and next-gen Galaxy Mega
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
A leak from a source that’s working on the Kids Mode on upcoming Samsung smartphones has given some insight into what Samsung is planning on doing with the screen sizes of their upcoming products, which confirms what we’re going to see on the Galaxy S 5 Prime, Galaxy S 5 Mini, and a new Galaxy Mega. The S 5 Prime (which will probably adopt a different name) is arguably one of the most anticipated devices that everyone expects Samsung to release. It’s rumored to have slightly better specs than the S 5, but more importantly, it will supposedly be made from premium materials, unlike nearly every other plastic Samsung phone that’s released. This leak doesn’t shed much l…

Latest rumor suggests Google Now launcher changes could be tied to stock Android interface
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
One of the things that has set Google’s Android operating system apart from other smartphone interfaces have been some of the unique features and stylistic cues that Google brought to the screen. With Google I/O coming up in a few weeks and rumors swirling of a pending release of another significant update to Android, likely 4.5, we have suggestions that an overhaul of the home screen and notifications menu may be in the cards. Speaking of cards, they continue to play a big role in the interface according to this latest rumor. Originally part of the Google Now model, the card metaphor has been spreading throughout the Google ecosystem and is even getting copied by thir…

Google’s “Flounder” codename surfaces in Android 4.4.3 changelog
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Earlier this week we reported on the codename “Flounder” surfacing in a Chromium issue tracker entry. The rumor was that this pointed to the release of an HTC produced Nexus tablet from Google. The recent release of a detailed changelog for Android 4.4.3 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) seems to confirm the connection between HTC and the “Flounder” device as seen in the changelog entry. In the previous Flounder spotting, it was part of an apparent new build of Android, possibly 4.5. With the inclusion of the reference in the Android 4.4.3 changelog, this may point to the device being released initially on that version of Android. An upgrade to Android 4.5, ass…

This iPhone app could be the Instagram of 3D images
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
On its face, Seene looks like another Instagram clone that gives you an easy way to share your pictures. But Seene is one of the more interesting photo apps we’ve seen in a while and what makes it special is that it can actually take the pictures you upload onto it and render them as 3D model. The way it works is pretty simple: The app uses the camera to capture the object from various angles to construct the 3D model. The model usually isn’t perfect, but it does a pretty good job of showing the depth of the scene. In the app, viewers can rotate their iPhone to see the image from different angles just as though it’s a real object sitting in front of you. The “Seenes” c…

More consumers are trading in old phones for a Galaxy S5 than an iPhone 5s
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Following the release of the Galaxy S5, we explored the electronic device trade-in market as it related to Samsung’s new phone and the iPhone 5s. Although Gazelle concluded that iPhone owners were content with their purchases, U.K.-based trade-in site CompareMyMobile found that the largest group of converts were in fact Apple faithful. From the unveiling of the Galaxy S5 up to its release, nearly 40% of consumers planning to trade in their devices for the Samsung flagship were iPhone owners. Nearly a month after the Galaxy S5′s release, it’s still attracting more trade-ins than the iPhone 5s. According to the latest data provided to BGR, 21% of people trading in their …

Dish Network is looking to pick up T-Mobile if the Sprint merger fails
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Although Dish Network is not interested in entering an bidding war for potential suitors, the satellite television company is primed and ready to snag T-Mobile if the Sprint merger falls apart this summer. Bloomberg reports that Dish has been eyeing both DirecTV and T-Mobile in recent months, but as DirecTV shares have risen amid talk of an AT&T acquisition, the rival provider has become too expensive to chase. “We don’t have the kind of money to go outbid Sprint for T-Mobile or outbid AT&T for DirecTV,” said Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen. “So we have to be well positioned so no matter what happens it’s all good for us, and I think we’re there.” Ergen recomme…

A sign of things to come: Check out this old video of Steve Jobs talking with Dr. Dre
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/9479a8c674a3fb7dbdcf8eef252dcc35.jpg 10 years before he drunkenly celebrated his company’s acquisition by Apple for a reported $3.2 billion, Dr. Dre actually popped up via iChat at one of Apple’s events and congratulated Steve Jobs on the success of both the iPod and the iTunes Store. A video of the event, flagged by 9to5Mac, shows a decidedly more sober Dre telling Jobs that he’s happy that the iPod has been such a success because it means “no more carrying big duffle bags full of CDs.” 9to5Mac notes that Dre was actually instrumental in convincing artists such as Eminem to allow Apple sell their music over the web on the iTun…

Make It Rain: The Love of Money is the latest addictive iOS game that has gone viral in the App Store, Re/code reports, having been downloaded 1.6 million times and raking in $50,000 per day from in-app purchases and ads. The game lets users make money on their smartphones – lots of cash – but there’s a catch: It’s only virtual cash they can spend in the game. Users have to swipe as fast as they can to pile up money “hundreds, then thousands, then millions, then billions, then kill-billies, mega-billies, and beyond.” Once enough money is gathered, users can purchase various things like a clown college business, make political investments, or pay off an FBI agent or two…

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

A few weeks ago we learned that Netflix would be implementing a price hike for new subscribers. Today, Netflix has explained just who will be faced with the price hike, when, and how much. The account holder in my household received the email above and states that the $7.99 monthly charge will get raised to $8.99; however, current customers are protected for two years. All new members will have to pay $8.99 from the start. Overseas, Netflix subscribers will incur an additional £1 in the United Kingdom and €1 for the rest of Europe. This will allow the company to cover the rising cost for streaming rights and capture new deals. When the price changes, will you b…

Budget waterproof smartphones said to be the target for 2015
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Water and your devices. They just do not go hand and hand. In 2013, Samsung realized that they could serve a consumer that wanted durability and released the Galaxy S 4 Active. And this year Samsung and others, like Sony, made their flagship smartphones water and dust resistant. Durability is something becoming expected and now other manufacturers will take this concept to another market for 2015. Sources say the entry-level and mid-range smartphones will be the target for waterproofing next year. Right now, the cost of a waterproof smartphone is way too high. So releasing a handset below $300 without a contract that is waterproof is the goal. Getting to that price whi…

Oracle wins Java copyright ruling against Google’s Android
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Oracle Corp today won a key legal battle over Google when the U.S. appeals court decided that Oracle could copyright certain part of the Java programming, used by Google to design Android. Oracle originally sued Google in 2010, claiming that they had improperly used Java in Android. Because of that they are seeking around $1 billion in damages on the copyright claims. A San Francisco judge had ruled that Oracle could not claim copyright protection on parts of Java, but today that ruling was reversed by a 3 part panel. Oracle said that they were “extremely pleased” with the decision, and Google had no immediate comment. Source: Oracle Come comment on this …

After it was uncovered that Snapchat was being dishonest about to their users about privacy, they have now entered into a consent decree with the FTC addressing concerns over the companies privacy policy. Snapchat went through a huge data breach last year exposing 4.6 million phone numbers and user names. According to the FTC, the data breach contradicted promises made by Snapchat concerning security. Evan Spiegal, a co-founder of Snapchat has also tried to be upfront about the fact that Snapchat pictures are rather easy to capture and save, however the companies privacy policy did not necessarily make that clear. Samsung won’t use the May 28 health care tech event to launch a new product
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

A number of people assumed that because Samsung sent out invitations to the May 28 health care tech event, that they would use the event to launch a new health-care product. This is not true. Samsung VP Stefan Heuser told Re/Code that Samsung would not be using the event as a product announcement. Samsung’s electronics unit is in fact split into 2 parts, the part that makes devices like TV’s, smartphones, and so on, and the part that makes components, like chips and displays. The part of the company that is holding the health-care event is in fact the latter part. Source: Re/code Come comment on this article: Samsung won’t use the May 28 health care tech event …

The FCC can’t handle all the net neutrality calls it’s getting, urges people to write emails...
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

The Federal Communications Commission would rather read your thoughts about net neutrality than hear about them. Columbia Law School professor and leading net neutrality activist Tim Wu points out that calling the FCC’s main consumer hotline will give you a message that asks you to write an email to the commission if you’re calling about FCC chairman Tom Wheeler’s controversial net neutrality plans. This seemingly indicates that either the FCC is being flooded with calls about net neutrality that its operators can’t handle them all or it just is tired of hearing everyone call about net neutrality and would like to see them send emails instead. Either way, it looks as thou…

Amazon bans seller that threatened to sue customer over negative review
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Remember the Amazon shopper that was suddenly faced with the threat of a lawsuit after posting a negative review for a router? That shopper was vindicated on Thursday, shortly after the story of his predicament began to spread, as Amazon removed all Mediabridge products from their online store in response to the company’s explosive reaction to the review. Ars Technica updated its story, pointing to a lengthy Facebook post from Mediabridge defending the company’s actions. The post has since been deleted, but Ars Technica managed to gather some of the highlights beforehand. In the eyes of Mediabridge, the 1-star review included “libelous statements,” which have now been …

Scientists actually find one health benefit to playing video games… sort of
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Have you ever gotten so addicted to a video game (I’m looking at you, Civilization!) that you’ve foregone eating and not felt hungry until after you’ve stopped playing? Well it turns out that there’s a scientific explanation for this phenomenon. Researchers at Plymouth University’s Cognition Institute in the United Kingdom have found that playing Tetris for a certain period of time actually seems to reduce natural cravings such as hunger. Essentially, the researchers claim that having an interactive visual stimulus such as Tetris or other video games in front of you can replace your cravings for a little bit. The researchers conclude that “Tetris might be a useful task fo…

Retailers are already eager to sell you a Galaxy S5 Prime
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Samsung may still be in denial about the Galaxy S5 Prime, a superior Galaxy S5 version expected to launch next month, but it looks like one website from Hong Kong is already eager to sell the handset. Spotted by SammyToday on Price.com.hk, the Galaxy S5 SM-G906S is apparently a special upgraded version of the Galaxy S5 for South Korea. The SM-G906 model number has previously been spotted in Galaxy S5 Prime leaks, and it’s very close to the SM-G900, the model number of the Galaxy S5 family. According to the website, the SM-G906S will offer pack a 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 (Quad HD or 2K) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and run Android 4.4.3 KitKat o…

The silliest patent ever awarded may already be infringed by millions of people
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded Amazon what appears to be the silliest patent yet – detailed by Photography Bay, the patent describes ways of taking pictures of subjects or products on a white background – which could turn the company into the a giant patent troll, assuming it ever finds a way to enforce it. Titled “Studio arrangement,” the patent was awarded to Amazon on March 18. Images for most products conceivable by mankind show them against a white or otherwise colored background. Photographers everywhere have used the technique, and will keep using it in the future, for billions of pictures. However, the USPTO still decided the invention…

It looks like the Galaxy S 5 with a eye popping 2560×1440 display will be exclusive to Korean carriers. Three versions of the Samsung device with the model number SM-G906 appeared and belong to SK Telecom (SM-G906S), KT (SM-G906K), and LG Uplus (SM-G906L). In addition to a gorgeous display, it will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor because it allows for displays with such resolutions to be managed. LG Isai officially released in Japan but not an LG G3 preview
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
LG officially released the LG Isai via KDDI in Japan yesterday. The smartphone is supposed to be a KDDI exclusive for that market. Historically LG’s Japanese phone releases have been a precursor to the release of new flagship devices around the world. Many people are expecting that to be the case again and are looking at the LG Isai to be a good indication of what the LG G3 will look like and what hardware will be included when released. According to LG, the forthcoming LG G3 and the LG Isai are “completely different” products. Despite that claim, comparing images of the LG Isai to leaked images of the LG G3 reveal devices that appear to be very similar. That probably …
