Image of Moto E leaks in Facebook post
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
With only a few days to go until Motorola announces a new smartphone on May 13th, a new image has popped up that allegedly shows the Moto E, a device Motorola will be selling in developing markets. Last month we reported the Moto E would be heading to Mexico with other markets to follow, so it should not be a surprise that the leaked photo came from a Facebook user located in Mexico. The image posted on Facebook, since pulled, shows a white Moto E sitting next to a Moto G. There is a very minor size difference between the two and the Moto E appears to have some branding marks on the face of the device. Previous reports only hinted at a rear-facing camera and the poste…

Google Play Services 4.4 teardown reveals much more waiting in the wings
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Google started rolling out an update to Google Play Services earlier this week to take it up to version 4.4. Publicly, the update included the ability to embed Street View imagery in apps, some motion detectors, and tweaks to Mobile Ads, game services, and Google Wallet. Now that the update has started to reach actual users, a teardown of the APK has commenced revealing Google included a lot more in the file even if it has not been turned on yet. Anyone who has received the update is aware that there is a whole slew of new permissions that are requested. It appears that at least some of these new permissions may be laying the groundwork to control non-Google apps acces…

TSA’s new app could make dealing with airport security less of a nightmare

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/715ed72e06548221a4c2dda09f4c54fc.jpg The advent of the PreCheck program has made trips to the airport far less stressful, but how does the TSA keep the screening process secure and unpredictable? Bloomberg Businessweek reports that the TSA uses a “randomizer” app at around 100 airports to determine which passengers will go through the expedited screening process and which will go through standard screening. After passing the initial risk assessment, passengers are asked to step on to an electronic mat which randomly assigns them to a line. Not only does this method speed up the process, it also prevents accusations of racial…

New leak reveals that the iPhone 6 has a surprising design influence
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Have you gotten tired of iPhone 6 leaks this week? Well too bad because here’s another one. Italian website Macitynet.it is back with another collection of leaked pictures showing off an iPhone 6 mockup and this time it’s decided to show it side-by-side with the fifth-generation iPod touch. This is particularly interesting because the pictures show that while the iPhone 6 will big significantly larger than any iPhone ever released, it will also take certain design cues from the iPod touch such as rounder edges and a thinner frame. As you can see from the picture above, the iPhone 6 looks almost as thin as the fifth-generation iPod touch, even though its overall fra…

iPhone 4 vs. Galaxy S3: One of these phones can’t run the latest mobile OS
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Even though it’s almost four years old, and has hardware that can’t compete – at least on paper – with the 2012 Galaxy S3, the iPhone 4 can still run its the latest version of iOS. Sure, the iPhone 4 does not get all of Apple’s iOS 7 features, but it’s still packs most of them and is able to run rather well with Apple’s 2013 mobile OS release. Samsung, on the other hand, confirmed to SamMobile what many Galaxy S3 buyers feared — that one of the most popular Galaxy S3 versions will never get KitKat. After a leaked internal document revealed that the Galaxy S3 KitKat update for the GT-I9300 model that’s available in many markets has been suspended, Samsung confirmed that…

Leaked photos reveal Samsung’s most impressive tablet yet
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Samsung has a new tablet family in the works that will offer high-end features as the company moves to grab more and more tablet market share from Apple, and SamMobile has obtained the first images of the Galaxy Tab S. The tablet’s main feature appears to be the display, a high-resolution OLED screen that has been mentioned in numerous earlier leaks, even before it had a name. However, from the looks of it, the tablet still comes with the Magazine UX Samsung has developed for its Note Pro and Tab Pro tablets that were announced at CES and already launched in many markets. Furthermore, the Galaxy S5’s band-aid plastic case design will apparently be found on the back of …

New Surface Pro reportedly debuting alongside Surface mini
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Microsoft is widely expected to unveil a new smaller version of its Surface tablet during a press conference scheduled to take place later this month. According to several reports, the new “Surface mini” will likely feature a display that measures about 8 inches diagonally, and it will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows RT platform. An earlier report from Bloomberg noted that Microsoft plans to unveil multiple additional Surface tablets alongside the new Surface mini, and now another report has chimed in to state the same. According to unnamed sources speaking with CNET, Microsoft will unveil a new Intel-powered Surface tablet along with the other models set to be unvei…

Beats acquisition called Apple’s ‘best idea since the iPad’
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

When big news breaks, taking the contrarian viewpoint is an instant traffic magnet. And when it comes to Apple’s rumored upcoming acquisition of Beats Electronics, the contrarian viewpoint is beyond obvious — not a single respected industry watcher seems to be able to make any sense of the deal at all. Beats’ headphone lineup obviously has value and its steaming music product also obviously has value to Apple, but is the Beats brand really a good fit in Cupertino? Is Apple really going to manage another brand for the first time ever? Is Beats really so important to the future of Apple that it warrants becoming the company’s biggest ever acquisition at $3.2 billion? Mos…

Here’s what you need to do if you want to buy a OnePlus One
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
No matter how well received the OnePlus One has been so far, the company appears to be somewhat struggling to make enough units for all interested buyers, and the invite system that is currently the only way to score a handset isn’t exactly that appealing. The company is apparently aware of the confusion created and has further clarified the process by answering a series of questions buyers keep asking. To get an invites, users will have to wait for contests and raffles at first. After that, the people who actually buy the device will be able to invite friends to purchase their own phones. “The first real batch of invites roll out late May, and will be of the 64GB S…

IPHONE 6 LEAK: This is what the iPhone 6 will look like in all three colors - space gray, gold...
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Excitement for Apple’s next-generation iPhone 6 is really starting to build now, and new leaks are coming fast and furious. Supposed schematics for the iPhone 6 leaked from Apple’s manufacturing partners some time ago and as always, third-party protective case makers have been using them to begin designing cases in an effort to get a leg up on the competition. This year, however, people are also using the schematics to build mockups of the iPhone 6, and they may give us a very good idea of what the finished product will look like. Now, new photos of iPhone 6 mockups have surfaced, potentially showing off all three colors the redesigned iPhone 6 side by side for the fir…

One big reason for the Beats deal: ‘Apple is afraid’
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple’s $3.2 billion acquisition of Beats has been mostly panned by analysts so far and even high-profile Apple fans are having a hard time making sense of it. @SammyWalrusIV, a well-known Apple fan and analyst mostly communicates anonymously through his Twitter account, has written a post over at AAPL Orchard explaining that one reason Apple decided to shell out so much money is that it is flat-out scared of losing its clout in the music business. “Apple is afraid,” he writes. “I suspect Apple feels threatened as its mind share for music is declining. The iPod died on behalf of its older sibling, the iPhone, and following its death, the grip Apple had on music has sta…

by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

In addition to Apple and Target, Best Buy wants to sell users as many iPhone units as possible as well, and the big box retailer has a unique deal for iPhone buyers looking to purchase Apple’s flagship device for as little as possible. While the iPhone 5s usually starts at $199 with a new two-year contract from either AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, Best Buy is ready to sell it for $0 to buyers who are willing to trade in an old iPhone. Best Buy is to guaranteeing a trade-in credit of up to $200 for current iPhone users who trade in their iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s. In the event that your iPhone’s trade-in value is above the guaranteed credit offer, the balance will be hand…

Mother’s Day is coming up in just a few days, and Google is celebrating my posting a video celebrating mothers. Grab the tissues as you watch “Seeds,” shot entirely through Google Glass by students of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts for the Glass Creative Collective. The short film shows a son’s journey to his mother, but we don’t want to give too much away, so check out the video after the break. Source: 9to5 Google Click here to view the embedded video. Sprint’s HTC One Max receiving Sense 6 software update
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Sprint customers, fire up your HTC One Max! The Sprint variant of HTC’s phablet is starting to receive a software update that brings all of the goodies from Sense 6, the skin that shipped with the HTC One (M8). The update is just over 537MB, so make sure you have enough storage. On Twitter, @LlabTooFer notes that the update gives the One Max everything that the One (M8) has with the exception of Motion Launch. For those of you unaware, Motion Launch allows you to wake and launch certain applications without hitting the power button by simply tapping the display. Have you gotten the update? If so, let us know in the comments how it feels. Source: @LlabTooFeR …

Galaxy S 5 Mini leaks with a not-so-mini 4.8 inch screen
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
A GFX benchmark for a Samsung SM-G800H has surfaced, confirming what will probably end up being the Galaxy S 5 Mini. However, instead of the 4.5-inch screen we were originally anticipating, this benchmark shows a device with a 4.8-inch display. Now, that is technically “mini” compared to the Galaxy S 5, but 4.8 inches isn’t small by any stretch. It’s much bigger than the 4.3-inch screen on the S 4 Mini and the same size as Samsung’s older Galaxy S III. Bigger phones clearly have their place in the market, but Samsung is completely missing the point of offering a mini device. Aside from the larger screen, the other specs are in line with what we’ve been hearing. The …

Mysterious Moto G Cinema appears on Motorola website
by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies

The name Moto G Cinema recently popped up on Motorola’s support website. Besides the name, there’s nothing we really know about the supposedly upcoming device, so we can only guess what it is. The name cinema sounds like a device with a large, cinematic screen, doesn’t it? It’s perhaps the next version of the Moto G, but we’ll have to wait and see for the details. Motorola’s hosting an event on May 13 in London, and hopefully we’ll hear more then. Motorola’s leaky website reveals completely new Android smartphones
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Whether intentionally or by accident, Motorola has been rather careless with its website for a few days now, confirming many details about its upcoming Android devices on its official site. After listing the name and the price of the Moto X+1 flagship smartphone, Motorola has now apparently mentioned on its site a completely new Moto G Cinema handset that could also be released soon. Similarly, a Moto 4G Global and a Moto 3G have also been spotted. These signs seem to suggest the company is getting ready to soon sell many new Android phones. @evleaks scored a screenshot of Motorola’s website that mentions the product, although an actual image of the new handset, or det…

Google’s purported new Nexus devices teased in Android 4.4.3 code
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

After Myce discovered in the Chromium issue tracker a fish-based codename (Flounder) for a Google device running an early-May Android version, speculating that Flounder may be the Nexus 8/9 tablet tipped to be made by HTC, xda-developers has dug deeper and found more evidence that HTC is the maker of Flounder. Additionally, what could also be a Nexus device codenamed “Molly” has also been spotted. Digging through the Android 4.4.3 KitKat MR2 changelist, the publication found lines of code that associate Flounder to HTC, as seen below: project device/htc/flounder/ f6f0fe7 flounder: fix KGDB port d9a03bc flounder: take out conservative cpufreq governor a.o. extraneo…

We know that Netflix is raising subscription prices for new subscribers, but the company said this year that current subscribers will be able to keep their current lower prices for an undefined amount of time. Now thanks to CNBC, we know just how much more time longtime Netflix subscribers have to enjoy their lower subscription fees: Two more years. Netflix said in its Q1 2014 earnings report released last month that it will increase monthly subscription fees for new customers by between $1 and $2 per month, which could represent as much as a 25% increase in monthly fees. However, those of us who have been enjoying Netflix’s streaming services for a while now will be able…

Did Dr. Dre just drunkenly confirm Apple’s Beats buy?
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
If Dr. Dre is going to fit in at Apple, he should probably learn to say something along the lines of, “We get bought up by larger technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” Instead, however, the legendary hip-hop producer has shown up on a new video posted by actor Tyrese Gibson where he boasts about being “the first billionaire in hip-hop.” On his Facebook page, Gibson said in a now-deleted post that he shot the video in a studio with Dre “on the night his deal went public” to be acquired by Apple for $3.2 billion. Gibson prefaced Dre’s boast by saying that Dre was “drunk off of Heinekens,” so it seems the good Dr. was …

Leaked specs show the Galaxy S5 mini will be better than the S4 mini in every way
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
A new set of specifications for the Galaxy S5 mini appear to have leaked this week. GFXBench recently posted a performance sheet for an unannounced Samsung device with the code name “SM-G800H,” and based on the specs, the device is likely the Galaxy S5 mini, or Galaxy S5 Dx if recent leaks are to be believed. Based on the performance sheet, the phone will feature a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and most surprisingly of all, a 4.8-inch 720p display. To put the display size into perspective, the S4 mini featured a 4.3-inch screen and the full-sized Galaxy S5 display only stretches 5.1 inches. If the performance…

AT&T really doesn’t want you saying it’s in a price war with T-Mobile
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Is AT&T feeling the heat from the “Uncarrier?” Not if AT&T CFO John Stephens is to be believed. CNET reports that Stephens told an investor conference on Thursday that all of the talk about AT&T being in a “price war” with T-Mobile is just media hype and that the company isn’t under pressure to react to moves being made by the scrappy carrier that has shook up the wireless industry over the last year. “The competition is more noisy than disruptive,” Stephens said, in a veiled shot at the often loud-mouthed T-Mobile CEO John Legere. He also said that T-Mobile’s decision to pay off new customers’ early termination fees hasn’t hurt AT&T so far and added …

The Galaxy S5 looks like an even bigger hit than the Galaxy S4
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
For all its faults, the Galaxy S5 is still a pretty great device, especially if what you prize the most in your smartphone is a big, beautiful display. New data from Chitika indicates that North American Android fans agree, which is why they’re seemingly adopting it an even faster rate than they adopted the Galaxy S4. According to Chitika’s analysis, the Galaxy S5 accounted for 4.3% of all North American smartphone traffic 25 days after its release, while the Galaxy S4 accounted for just 2% of North American smartphone traffic 25 days after its release last year. This isn’t conclusive evidence that the Galaxy S5 is outselling the Galaxy S4 so far but it does at least i…
