T-Mobile continues to honor the phone that started the Android revolution
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

For some reason – perhaps a mistake – T-Mobile still has a page on its website listing the first Android smartphone ever made, the late 2008 HTC-made G1 that started the Android revolution. Found by a Redditor, the page offers potential buyers more details about the “modern compass” that was the G1. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Netflix turns up the heat on FCC’s controversial net neutrality plan
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Although Netflix has yet to launch a formal campaign against the Federal Communications Commission's controversial net neutrality proposals, the company apparently has given the FCC an earful in a private meeting. Unnamed sources tell Reuters that "Netflix brought its concerns about Internet neutrality directly to U.S. regulators this week in meetings" with FCC staff members. Reuters' sources don't give any details about what Netflix's specific objections were but we do know that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings posted a message on his Facebook account recently that slammed "tolls coming for the web thanks to [the] FCC," so it's very likely that Netflix representatives talked a …

Jury finds Samsung guilty of infringing some patents in Apple trial – awards paltry $120M
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
The implications in the weeks-long patent trial between Apple and Samsung couldn't have been bigger — or more difficult for most consumers to care about. If you've been following the case, however, the verdict is in: guilty... and not guilty. The California jury on Friday evening determined that some Samsung devices did in fact infringe two Apple patents — patents 5,946,647 and 8,046,721 — and it cleared all Samsung devices of infringing the other patents Apple had asserted. Apple's award for damages? $119.6 million, or just over 1% of Apple's net profit in the March quarter. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

One of Google’s Project Ara suppliers shares a bit about 3D printing advances
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
3D Systems, a primary vendor tasked with creating the 3D printing processes to be used to produce Project Ara phones from Google, shared some information via their blog this week about advances they are making in order to accommodate the project. Since Google thinks modular smartphones will have a key place in the future market, they are pushing for manufacturing processes that can handle millions, if not billions, of units being 3D printed. This means 3D Systems has had to re-think how 3D printing occurs and figure out how to scale it up for mass production. One of the changes they are looking at is a move away from a “reciprocating platform.” Most 3D printers now mov…

AllCast “headset” feature for Fire TV being worked on
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
An oft-requested feature for streaming content apps is the ability to display the picture on the big screen, but continue to receive sound through a mobile device so the user can pop their headphones on and tune out external noises. Koushik Dutta, developer of the AllCast app, indicates he is working on a solution to implement this feature when AllCast is used in conjunction with Amazon’s Fire TV set top box. According to Dutta, the Fire TV will download and display the video while the audio stream will be delivered to the mobile device. He indicates he is even going so far as to mute the TV. Unfortunately, it does not look like this capability will be coming to Chrome…

by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

The madness has ended. OnePlus’ ongoing ‘Smash the Past’ campaign has come to a close with more than 140,000 applicants submitting ideas. Within the next day, OnePlus will be reaching out to the lucky winning applicants to buy their OnePlus One for just $1. But rather than just smashing 100 smartphones, OnePlus is giving the winning applicants a chance to do some good. OnePlus is partnering with Medic Mobile to recycle devices for healthcare workers in remote areas. Medic Mobile said this to OnePlus: You’re giving the best new tech out there for $1 and recycling users’ existing phones for good. And then we’re turning those 100 phones into 1,000 phones for peopl…

Motorola is rumored to be prepping the Moto X+1 handset for launch later this year, a Moto X successor that will also allow users to customize the device, and the company has confirmed the new phone's name on its MotoMaker website. A “Moto X+1 Details” button has appeared on Motorola’s website, and it will supposedly point to a special page dedicated to Motorola’s upcoming new flagship. Unfortunately, the button doesn't lead anywhere because the company has yet to publish the official Moto X+1 product page. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

You can now turn any HTC One (M8) into the Harman Kardon edition
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
HTC's new flagship HTC One (M8) is the best Android phone in the world for a number of reasons. The design is gorgeous, the build is impeccable and the software is refined and modern. The killer sound is an added benefit thanks to HTC's front-facing "BoomSound" setup, but Sprint subscribers have access to an even better version of the M8 that includes Harman Kardon audio tuning. Thanks to some handwork over on the XDA Developers forum, however, any HTC One (M8) owner can now enjoy the added benefits of the Harman Kardon limited edition version. Continue reading... Apple may not be making big splashy moves such as Google's Nest acquisition or Facebook's purchase of WhatsApp, but it won't hesitate to buy up smaller companies that it thinks can add real value to its products. Unnamed sources tell TechCrunch that Apple has just bought LuxVue Technology, a company that develops power-efficient micro-LED display technology. Other than this, though, not much is known about what the company has been up to — TechCrunch notes that it at one point raised $43 million in venture funding but has otherwise "managed to remain fairly quiet over the past few years." That said, it seems pretty likely that Apple wants to incorporate LuxVue's energy ef…

Here are the Android OEMs that do the best job of getting you the latest software
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
One of the downsides of owning an Android phone is that it can take you forever to get the latest software updates since each Android OEM has to work separately with different carriers before it can push out new updates. That said, some OEMs do a much better job of this than others and Computerworld has taken the time to track their performance and grade them. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Although the traditional narrative about Apple and Samsung is that Apple is the leader and Samsung is the fast follower, that's just not always the case. For instance, Apple will likely release its first-ever phablet later this year more than two years after Samsung released the first Galaxy Note. And now Business Insider points out that Apple is taking cues from Samsung in another area: Marketing. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Meet the two men responsible for protecting the Internet
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies

Last month, the Heartbleed bug was revealed as a major vulnerability in the world’s most popular encryption method, OpenSSL. Since Heartbleed was uncovered, we still don’t know too much about the people behind OpenSSL. To find out more, BuzzFeed has written a great profile of the two guys named Steve who basically control OpenSSL. Steve Henson, a 46-year-old British mathematics Ph.D., contributes roughly 60% of the code behind OpenSSL, and Steve Marquess, a former Defense Department consultant, runs the OpenSSL Software Foundation, which raises money to support the continued development of OpenSSL. Awesome case lets you charge your Android phone with Apple’s MagSafe power connector
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Have you ever wished you could charge your Android phone with the same kind of magnetic power connector used in Apple's MacBooks? If so, then one developer at DroidBuild has created a new smartphone case that might pique your curiosity. The developer created the new case by modding a spare MagSafe power connection lying around and attaching it to a 3D printed ABS faceplate. The result is a case that fits perfectly on his Galaxy Note II and that lets him charge the device just as he'd charge a MacBook Air. While this is obviously just a prototype and won't be going on sale anytime soon, it's still a really cool concept that anyone who has access to a spare MagSafe and a 3D…

Windows XP’s long, drawn-out death is finally giving Microsoft what it wants
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Microsoft went against its word and issued one last security update for the aging platform on Thursday, but new security holes that pop up will go unfixed and your personal data is at risk as a result. It's time to move on. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Samsung confirms the existence of what could be a Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800F)
by Guest Macky Evangelista- 0 replies
It’s no surprise Samsung is working on a Galaxy S 5 Mini considering its predecessors received the same treatment, but at least we have Samsung to actually solidify the rumors of the said device. The S5 Mini should garner the model number of SM-G800 and as you can expect the specs will be in the mid-range tier. You can expect a 4.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, 2MP front-facing camera, and an 8MP rear camera. Just like it’s big brother, the Mini will also be dust and water-resistant. You can expect the official announcement of this device in June. Until then, stay tuned! source: Samsung vi…

LG G3 appears in best pictures yet, specs confirmed
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The LG G3 will be unveiled on May 27, so the timing seems right for a few decent pics of the device. That is exactly what we have, and these aren’t blurrycam images either folks. The picture above is actually a better version of the one that we posted last week. You can clearly see the new redesigned back button layout that also leaked a few days ago. We also have two more images below, one showing the front of the device and the other showing the rear of the device again. The lack of bezel on the device is stunning to say the least. As far as specs go, the source of the top image confirmed that the G3 will sport a 5.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display, 2GB or …

The Galaxy S 5 and Samsung unpacked teaser icons explained… sort of
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
Back in February, about two weeks before Samsung’s annual Unpacked event that showcases the company’s new devices, the company took to its Twitter account teasing the event. In that teaser, we saw a possible new set of icons that could be on the Galaxy S 5. Well the announcement has come and gone — with the official announcement of the S5 that’s already gone on sale — with nary a mention about these new icons. Well the folks at Samsung Tomorrow took some time and broke down what exactly that teaser image showed us, regarding both the icons and the phone in general. In that research, it was discovered that Samsung didn’t use all nine of the icons shown. The “Life,” “Fi…

New Antitrust lawsuit suggests that Google has a monopoly on internet and mobile search
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
According to a new antitrust lawsuit that was filed yesterday, Google is said to be violating antitrust laws by maintaining an illegal monopoly — not only on Internet search but mobile search as well. This has supposedly affected the search market adversely while inflating the cost of devices of competing companies. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for Northern California. It accuses the Mountain View company of using Android as a way to maintain the monopoly through secret agreements with device makers. These agreements require companies to load Google’s suite of apps onto their devices. Known as Mobile Application Distribution Agreements or MADAs, th…

Coupled with the “Framily” plan, you’ll be able to pay 15 extra dollars a month to use your minutes to connect to people in other areas of the world. As Kymber Umana, Hispanic marketing manager for Sprint stated: “We understand how important international calling is to our customers. It won’t be long before T-Mobile overtakes Sprint as America’s No. 3 wireless carrier
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

While Verizon and AT&T have traditionally been the two biggest players in the U.S., Sprint and T-Mobile have almost always been stuck behind in third and fourth place, respectively. However, T-Mobile's big "Uncarrier" surge over the last year is threatening to shake up the traditional order and make it, not Sprint, America's No. 3 wireless carrier. Continue reading...
