TWC: Our network ‘works just as well’ as Google Fiber
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
In an apparent attempt to enrage even more disgruntled subscriber, Time Warner Cable CTO Mike Lajoie reportedly compared his company's service with Google Fiber. DSL Reports writes that Google Fiber was a major topic of conversation at The Cable Show in Los Angeles this week, drawing the attention of the cable executives that had gathered for the event. Some cable companies are clearly aware of the threat of Google Fiber, but TWC doesn't appear to be concerned. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Why a bigger iPhone 6 should make Apple an insane amount of money
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Apple might be years late to the game when it comes to putting out smartphones with larger displays but that won't stop loyal fans and others from scooping up the bigger device in bulk when it's released this fall. AppleInsider directs our attention to new research published by Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, who projects that releasing an iPhone with a display of 5 inches or bigger will help Apple sell an additional 15 million iPhones in the United States alone. Google and Netflix are considering an all-out PR blitz against the FCC’s net neutrality plan
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

More bad news for the Federal Communications Commission: It looks like the coalition that came together to kill the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) might be getting back together to rally against its proposed new net neutrality rules. The Wall Street Journal reports that while big tech firms such as Google, Netflix and Yahoo have kept their powder dry so far when it comes to the FCC's new rules, "officials inside the companies who follow government policy say they are considering mobilizing a grass-roots campaign to rally public opinion around the idea that the Internet's pipes should be equally open for all." Don’t hurry off to buy the new MacBook Air just yet
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
While Apple has just released the 2014 MacBook Air models, which are now cheaper than ever, interested buyers shouldn’t necessarily purchase one of them just yet, or at least not until they check out all other available Air deals, considering that the new models offer only slight improvements compared to last year’s Airs and that 2012 and 2013 MacBook Air versions are now even cheaper than before. Spending all your money has never looked so good

Here's what an iPhone-based mobile payment system from Apple might look like Nothing has been made official at this point, but it's pretty clear that Apple is working on a mobile payment product. Chief executive Tim Cook touts the hundreds of millions of credit cards Apple has on file in iTunes accounts every chance he gets, and the obvious inference is that the people linked to these accounts will be potential Apple payment system users beginning on day one. Touch ID on the iPhone 5s is another piece of the puzzle, as it will likely provide secure authentication for iPhone payments. Well, somewhat secure, at least. We have discussed Apple's seemingly imminent …

by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

We've just found a new downside to owning beachfront property. The Smithsonian reports that a dead blue whale has washed up on the beaches of Trout River, a small town in Newfoundland whose residents are worried that its corpse is filling up with methane at an alarming rate. In fact, the 18-foot whale corpse is filling up with methane so quickly that it's now apparently bloated to twice its original size. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Latest update on the Samsung vs Apple patent infringement case
by Guest Macky Evangelista- 0 replies
As we all know, Apple and Samsung have been in court for a couple of years now because Apple claims that Samsung has infringed on numerous mobile device patents. The device in question for this one is Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, which we all know is part of Google’s Nexus program. In a nutshell, Apple claims that Samsung has copied the iPhone and demands more than $2 billion in “damages,” while Samsung, on the other hand, claims Apple has infringed on no such thing. After Samsung concluded its defense, it even claimed that Apple themselves has infringed on Samsung’s patents. Samsung’s main defense is also that the Galaxy Nexus employed Google’s Android OS and that they had…

Samsung touts 4 ways the Galaxy S5 is better than the iPhone – without bashing the iPhone once
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Every once in a while, Samsung puts together some promotional videos that somehow manage to avoid bashing Apple a single time. Though it may be rare, it does happen. And when it happens, the videos in question tend to actually focus on explaining some key features of the product Samsung is trying to sell. As crazy as it sounds, sometimes these promos are even more interesting and helpful than Samsung's dozens upon dozens of Apple-bashing spots. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

When it comes to your smartphone or tablet, there is absolutely nothing worse than the feeling you get when you realize your device is no longer by your side. First, a moment of sheer terror causes you to freeze in place. Then panic sets in and the frantic rush to retrace your steps and think of where you might have left your device makes accurately retracing those steps incredibly difficult. But it doesn't have to be such a horrible experience. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Microsoft is creating a secret lab to develop wild Google X-style projects
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Microsoft's research arm has apparently gotten tired of seeing Google get all the headlines for doing wild projects such as self-driving cars and weather balloons that serve as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. According to ZDNet, Microsoft Research is creating a new Special Projects group that will work on "disruptive technologies that could benefit the company and society." What's more, ZDNet says that Microsoft has reeled in Norman Whitaker, the former deputy director at the Information Innovation Office at DARPA, to head up the group. DARPA, of course, is the U.S. Department of Defense's special research arm that was responsible for bringing us the TCP/IP networking protocols th…

Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins announced on Wednesday that every Hulu user will be able to access their favorite TV shows from more devices starting this summer. The Verge reports that full episode mobile streaming, a feature which was previously only available to Hulu Plus subscribers, is one of Hulu's next moves to compete with the unstoppable force that is Netflix. According to the report, a limited selection of shows will be offered to mobile viewers who don't subscribe to the service, a major step up from the short clips which currently make up the bulk of the content. Hulu will also launch an updated iPhone app to accompany the change. Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
