We have held a number of contests with Poweramp in the past, but this one is by far the biggest. Poweramp is celebrating build 555 by giving away 5 premier smartphones during a 5 day contest with their 5 favorite Android blogs. The phones up for grabs include the Samsung Galaxy S 5, HTC One (M8), LG G2, Nexus 5, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. An amazing group indeed. Here’a how it works. All you have to do is comment at the bottom of this post telling us what your first Android phone was (or is)? You will have until Friday, May 2, at 11:59PM PST to get your entry in. Once the contest is over, we will select one random winner and submit it to Poweramp. The other four site…

HP readying first Google approved laptop running Android
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
Computers and laptops have been somewhat of a novelty. Packed with OK specs and usually an Android version that’s a few generations behind. Another aspect that’s lacking in these mobile computers is the Google-approved status that allows these devices to use all the Google apps we’ve come to know in our day-to-day. Well thanks to a somewhat hidden video on its web site, HP looks to change a few of those aspects. HP isn’t a novice when it comes to putting Android on conventional computers — as we saw the company announce a 21.5-inch AIO Android computer at CES this year. However, unlike the All-In-One, this current foray into conventional computing will come with Goo…

Yet another Samsung smartphone shows up on shipping manifest
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Almost two months ago a couple devices showed up on Indian web site Zauba which tracks devices being shipped into and out of the country. Those devices included the SM-G870A and the SM-G800F. At the time we thought one of those may be the Samsung Galaxy S 5 Neo. However, a new leak from Zauba for an SM-G750H may be the scaled down version of Samsung’s latest flagship device. The bad news is that the device that was discovered is listed as having a 5.1-inch display. Combined with an expected screen resolution of only 720p, the Galaxy S 5 Neo may have a noticeably less sharp display than other devices on the market. The Galaxy S 5 Neo is expected to come with a 2.3GHz Sn…

New free app promises to protect Android users from Heartbleed
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
After all this time, is Heartbleed really still an issue we should be concerned with? Yes, yes it is. Heartbleed, the shockingly severe and widespread OpenSSL flaw that impacted 66% of the entire Internet at the time of its discovery, has already been addressed by thousands upon thousands of websites. But believe it or not, there are still countless websites — and apps — out there that have yet to apply the updates necessary to protect their users. With vulnerable Android apps having been downloaded a whopping 150 million times, Heartbleed is a particularly important issue for Android users. And now, a simple new app claims that it will protect Android phone and tablet…

A visual history: The evolution of Google from simple search to Google Now
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
The world’s most popular smartphone operating system, self-driving cars, smart robots, and balloons that can deliver an Internet connection to remote areas are some of Google’s most interesting current projects, but they wouldn’t even exist without Search. Helping people get around online is still Google’s main product and everything else it does is somehow related to search – in fact, search-related ad revenue is how Google is actually able to pay for all these other projects. Engadget has taken a quick look at how Google Search evolved along the years, highlighting the various cosmetic and feature changes it went through from its inception all the way to Google Now. …

by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies

The last time Google’s self-driving car team checked in with us over a year ago, when it announced Google's cars had driven more 300,000 accident-free miles. Today, the team announced in a blog post that the cars have now driven over 700,000 miles. The team has been focused on improving the self-driving cars in cities rather than on freeways, mostly testing this in Google’s hometown of Mountain View, California, and this focus on city driving has produced some impressive results. by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Yes, it's a good bet that Apple will release at least one major new product category this year. Wall Street Playbook's leading tech analyst writes over at Seeking Alpha that Apple in its last quarterly earnings report revealed a "$2.8 billion jump in commitment for things like new manufacturing equipment, research and development, marketing and product tooling" as well as "a 30% jump in research and development costs, which, in the quarter, reached $1.4 billion, representing a 66% jump in R&D spending in two years." Now, 3D printing is on the verge of making its way into consumers' lives as well, and M3D's "Micro" printer is positioned to be at the front of this huge push. With nine days left in its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the company has now raised more than $3 million. Continue reading... Via BRG…

Netflix is getting much more confident that it will kill off cable
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Netflix hasn't killed off the traditional pay TV businesses just yet but it's become very confident that it soon will. Quartz has done a nice job of noting all the changes that Netflix has made to its "Long Term View" manifesto about the future of television and it looks as though Netflix has stopped hedging a lot of the bets that it made more tentatively a year ago. Download this app right now: Incredible FiLMiC Pro app for iPhone and iPad is now free
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Cinegenix's App Store description for its FiLMiC Pro video camera app begins with a shockingly bold statement. According to the company, its iOS app "beat the $5000 Sony FS100 and tied the $13,000 Canon C300 in blind audience testing" in a recent video camera shootout. Even more shocking, perhaps, is that the quality of videos captured using its popular iPhone and iPad app is so good that we absolutely believe that claim. Continue reading... Chinese document suggests OnePlus is wholly owned by Oppo
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

When Peter Lau left Oppo last year to start the new company OnePlus, there were a number of questions about the ownership of the new OnePlus. Lau has denied multiple times that OnePlus was owned by Oppo, and when asked why the OnePlus One looked so similar to the Oppo Find 7, he said that it was “perhaps because our aesthetics standard trends are similar”. Today a document was leaked from the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervisory Authority (SIPO) showing that OnePlus has one institutional stockholder, and that stockholder is Oppo. The fact that OnePlus might in fact be owned by Oppo may change some peoples perception of the company. Some people will likely be upse…

Does Microsoft’s first ad following the Nokia deal make you want to buy a Windows Phone?
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Nokia's handset business is officially no more, having been absorbed this past Friday by Microsoft as part of a $7.2 billion deal. Nokia's phones will live on, however, and the burden of selling them will now fall squarely on Microsoft's shoulders. Nokia had been the only smartphone vendor to really make any progress with Windows Phone, and most of it was with low-end devices in emerging markets. Even with Nokia's newfound success in recent quarters, however, Windows Phone's global market share still sits in the low single digits more than three years after the platform first launched. Of course, this is no longer Nokia's problem. Continue reading... Via BRG …

Here’s what to do if your Galaxy S5 is affected by the crazy camera bug
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Samsung on Friday confirmed that its latest Android flagship handset is affected by a major camera failure, without actually revealing how many Galaxy S5 devices have the flaw. Apparently, after a few days of regular use, the Galaxy S5’s main camera delivers an unexpected message – “Warning: Camera Failed” – and the camera stops working. The issue isn’t fixed after rebooting the device or returning it to factory settings. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Video: Don’t fall for any iPhone ‘iSchemes’ no matter how good they sound
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

A despicable iPhone trafficking scheme that targets homeless people has been uncovered in Denver by 9news’ 9Wants to Know. Homeless and desperate people who need quick cash are apparently used by a group of scammers to purchase on-contract iPhones in Apple stores. Once the transaction is done, these people are paid up to a couple of hundred dollars for the new handsets, while the con men walk away with the new devices, which can then be sold for full price. The homeless people, of course, are then left on the hook for the monthly fees associated with carrier contracts. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Rumors about the upcoming LG G3 have been floating around for a while now, but finally we have a picture of the device. The photo shows the back of the phone, and while it’s not the best quality, it does tell quite a bit about it. We can see that LG will be keeping the back mounted keys on the back of the device, thought they have been redesigned. The picture also shows some sort of sensor next to the camera. We don’t yet know what kind of sensor that will be. Keep an eye out for more details!
