Samsung Chromebook 2 gets delayed with no explanation
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
The wait to get your hands on a Chromebook 2 just got even longer. BetaNews has received confirmation from Samsung that its upcoming Chromebook has been delayed. Originally, the Chromebook 2 was expected to be released at the end of April (later this week). Samsung did not provide a reason for the delay, but it looks like the Chromebook 2 has been pushed to May. Right now, the Chromebook 2 is a standout device running Chrome OS. It features some of the best specifications ever seen in a Chromebook. In fact, the display is the best in class if you disregard the insanely-expensive Chromebook Pixel. The 13.3-inch display’s resolution is 1920×1080 and inside is 4GB of RAM …

Sony Xperia Z2 is scheduled to be released in the United States this summer
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Do not expect to get your hands on the Xperia Z2 anytime soon in the United States. Sony confirmed to TechCrunch that its flagship device will be arriving on U.S. soil this summer. While carriers have not been announced just yet, Sony has made it clear the Xperia Z2 will be offered unlocked through its own online store. But if previous leaks are any indication, Verizon will be one of the carriers in the United States electing to offer the Xperia Z2. Sony’s silent United States presence should be of no surprise. The company does not put a focus on the U.S. market as it is so difficult to gain any traction. Over time, though, that could change. Especially if Sony moves o…

Apple patent lawsuit against Google revived by U.S. appeals court
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Today the U.S. appeals court revived a patent lawsuit against Motorola Mobility which had been dismissed shortly before the trial began, allowing Apple to seek another sales band against the company. A patent claim that Motorola made against Apple was also revived, however Motorola will not be able to seek a sales band on Apple. Despite a number of patent wars with different companies, Apple has yet to win a crippling injunction against a smartphone company while seeking a sales ban. In these lawsuits, the court will be hearing a case by Apple who are accusing Motorola Mobility of infringing on one patent, while Motorola Mobility is accusing Apple of infringing on…

Samsung suggesting hardware replacements for Galaxy S 5 camera failure
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Samsung has issued a statement regarding the Galaxy S 5s that have been suffering the camera failure bug. The bug manifests itself as a popup message error when the camera is launched, and it’s not really clear if it’s a hardware or software problem. Reboots and factory resets don’t seem to fix the problem, so it looks a lot like hardware failure. It seems to primarily affect Verizon devices, but there have been reports about other carrier devices being affected. The Samsung spokesperson didn’t mention anything about a software fix, but instead suggested that customers should return their malfunctioning devices to the carrier store they purchased it from, or call Sa…

Oppo to get into the attachable smartphone camera market to compete with Sony
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
Sony created a one-of-a-kind device with their QX10 and QX100. The attachable camera lenses could be stuck on a smartphone to offer picture quality better than what a built-in smartphone camera could offer. The devices were cool, but they obviously haven’t caught on to the mainstream just yet. However, that’s not going to stop Oppo from jumping head first into that market to give Sony a bit of competition. A leaked photo shows a camera lens, made by Oppo, attached to a smartphone in the same way that Sony’s QX line attaches. The device will be called a “Smart Lens” and will likely sport a 10x zoom with an option for a 15x zoom, similar to how Sony offers two models.…

HTC is also enjoying significant loyalty from owners of their older devices as 46.8% of the trade-ins came from that group of consumers who are trading up. by Guest Brendan Lynch- 0 replies

Google Fiber has certainly been generating some hype with its free and low-cost internet packages. In a recent document that was circulated to the next 34 cities slated to receive the service in 2015, Google hinted that there may be plans to roll out WiFi services to those cities in addition to wired fiber connections. While Google didn’t get specific with any details, they certainly alluded to wireless services that would go above and beyond their fiber connections. While Google is already a strong competitor in the limited areas of service, this could be a game changer for companies trying to compete. Offering basic broadband speeds free of charge, 1Gbps for $70…

Microsoft ended general support for Windows XP earlier this month and now anyone who wants to get continued patches has to fork over extra cash to Microsoft. However, Computerworld's Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols points out that individuals and companies who don't want to pay Microsoft full price for additional support will likely have another option to keep their Windows XP machines safe from viruses: The black market. Android Police reports that LEGO’s main feature seems to be the inclusion of animations in the search results that would thoroughly improve the search experience, allowing users to interact with certain results. How Netflix could defeat Comcast once and for all
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Netflix is clearly not happy with the current arrangement that it has with Comcast, which is why it's considering taking matters into its own hands. Ars Technica's Jon Brodkin has spotted a Netflix job listing for a senior software engineer who specializes in peer-to-peer networks. Furthermore, the job listing says that it wants this engineer to engage in "research and architecture of large-scale peer-to-peer network technology as applicable to Netflix streaming." In-depth discussions about the creation of our favorite devices is usually clouded in marketing speak and technical jargon, but in a recent conversation at the Computer History Museum, Mark Cerny and Shuhei Yoshida opened up about the development of the PS4 and the history of the PlayStation platform. Yoshida was a member of the PlayStation team from the outset of the project in 1993, before the original PlayStation had even launched. He climbed the ranks of the organization over the past two decades, eventually settling in as President of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios. Continue reading... Well, neither did the Federal Communications Commission, which earlier this week called AT&T's bluff and essentially dared it to skip out on what might be the most important wireless spectrum auction we'll see for years. How to use ‘Selective Focus’ and ‘Out of Focus’ on the Galaxy S 5
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The Bokeh effect has become a big thing in smartphones over the last few months. If you’re not familiar with the Bokeh effect, it is the process of de-focusing certain areas of a picture, usually the background. HTC went as far as adding a second lens for this effect and Google just added it to their stock Camera app. Now, Samsung has added “Selective Focus” and “Out of Focus” options to the Galaxy S 5. They both do the same thing, but act completely different. “Selective Focus” is for when you know in advance of taking your shot that you want to apply this effect, and “Out of Focus” is for those times when you didn’t know. You can make changes after the fact with both…

‘Ok Google’ to get major expansion and new navigations coming to Android
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The “OK Google” hotword has already evolved from its inception, but as with all Google products, there is a lot more on the way. Android Police is reporting that the “OK Google’ hotword will move to an “everywhere” concept. The biggest addition will be with apps, which could mean that you will be able to search from within apps. The rumor is that it would be done while the app is opened, but I would expect it to be searchable even if the app isn’t active on your screen. For example, you might be able to add items to your favorite grocery list app via “OK Google.” We have been hearing about this type of evolution for a while now, so hopefully it will happen sooner rather t…

OnePlus officially starts ‘Smash the Past’ campaign, signups now live
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

A couple of days ago we told you about the OnePlus “Smash the Past” campaign, in which you can smash your current phone for a chance to buy a brand spanking new OnePlus One for $1.00. Like I mentioned in my previous post, you won’t be able to use any old phone. OnePlus One details which phones are eligible, but you can use whatever you want to smash it. Some of the suggested items are a hammer, baseball bat, screwdriver, and a blender. As far as what phones you can smash, there are 25 in total, and the majority of them are pretty current. One exception is the Galaxy S III, which is nearly 2 years old, but it is a very popular phone. They also go as far back as the iPh…

HTC design team receives a major blow
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

HTC has been a leader in terms of smartphone design over the last few years, and the man mostly responsible for that has announced his departure from the company. Scott Croyle has been the SVP of Design and User Experience since 2008, but he will now concentrate on his own projects moving forward. If there is any good news out of this, it’s the fact that Croyle isn’t leaving them cold turkey. According to HTC, it’as a “long term transition” and he will still be involved with HTC product development as a consultant for a few more months. No word on who will take over, but the speculation is that it will be Jonah Becker, which is the second-in-command. HTC has also pr…

Video: A rare inside look at Apple’s North Carolina data center

Earlier this month, Greenpeace showered praise on Apple for its commitment to green energy despite the company's decision to locate its newest data center in North Carolina, which the environmental organization says has one of the dirtiest electrical grids in the United States. NBC's Today was given the opportunity to check out the facility and sent chief environmental correspondent Anne Thompson to speak with Apple's Lisa Jackson about the benefits of renewable energy and the huge amount of power required to run a data center.
