While email has made our work easier in many ways, it's also made it hard for us to really escape the office, particularly now that our smartphones are sure to remind us every time something urgent needs our immediate attention. The Guardian reports that French employers' federations and labor unions have just signed an agreement that requires French employees to shut off their work-related smartphones after they leave the office, which means that their bosses won't be able to nag them once they go home for the day. by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Are case manufactures already starting to crank out cases for the yet-to-be-released 5.5-inch version of the iPhone? Nowhereelse.fr has spotted a leaked picture posted on MobileFun.co.uk earlier this week that purportedly shows two different cases for Apple's two upcoming iPhone 6 models — one that would fit a phone with a display measuring 4.7 inches diagonally and another that measures 5.5 inches. AdAge: Sprint’s ‘Framily’ ads are ‘absurd’ and ‘frightful’
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Amazing but true: A talking hamster probably isn't going to convince you to switch wireless carriers. AdAge has done a review of Sprint's newest "Framily" plan ad campaign and has come away baffled as to why anyone not on copious amounts of hallucinogens thought they were a good idea. For the uninitiated, the ads feature a "Framily" called the "Frobinsons" who all save money every month by using Sprint's "Framily" plans. The father figure (or is that frather frigure?) in the ads is, inexplicably, a talking hamster who has somehow sired several human children with a human wife. No, we don't want to think about the logistics behind this apparent biological miracle/horror ei…

by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
It might not be as sleek and sexy as the upcoming HTC One sequel that we keep seeing in leaked photos, but another unreleased HTC smartphone was revealed on Wednesday in a freshly leaked image. Engadget has managed to get its hands on what the site claims to be an image of the HTC Desire 8, an upcoming mid-range Android phone from HTC that may debut in the coming weeks. The phone will reportedly include a 5.5-inch display, a 13-megapixel rear camera, an impressive 5-megapixel front-facing camera and stereo BoomSound speakers. As for when it might be unveiled, Engadget mentions March 18th as a possible launch date, so we may very well see the Desire 8 debut in the coming w…

Angry Birds tries to dethrone Flappy Bird with mysterious reveal
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Before the mobile smash hit Flappy Bird dominated the news cycle, Finnish company Rovio ruled the roost with its own group of suicidal avians. Now that Flappy Bird has flown the coop, Rovio is cautiously stepping back into the daylight with a new game in the Angry Birds franchise. The new Angry Birds will feature a fresh flock of birds to toss at the marauding green pigs, as Rovio revealed in a tweet, but we will have to wait until Thursday to learn the title of the game and to see whether or not Rovio has partnered with another major property this time around. This browser-based ripoff of Flappy Bird should tide you over in the meantime. Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Microsoft admits that Windows 8 sales are lagging behind Windows 7
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Although Windows 8 license sales appeared to be keeping pace with Windows 7 within the same time frame for the first several months, updates from Microsoft became less frequent as time passed. As Windows 8 approaches a year and a half on the market, The Verge reports that Microsoft has taken the stage at a Goldman Sachs technology conference to announce that sales have finally reached 200 million. To put that number into perspective, Windows 7 had reached 240 million license sales in a single year, and that number has been climbing by the hundreds of millions every year since. From what we've seen of Windows 8.1 Update 1, Microsoft is moving in the right direction, but tw…

BGR for iPhone and iPad updated for iOS 7
by Guest Jonathan S. Geller- 0 replies

We were one of the first big tech news brands with an iOS app, but we've been one of the last to update it with support for iOS 7. However, thanks to our good friend Sean Kovacs, the new app is available in the App Store right now. It has a redesigned interface, support for gestures, comments are now working again, it uses the dynamic system font sizes, sharing has been updated to take advantage of the iOS 7 share sheet, push notifications work for breaking news, and of course, bugs have been fixed. Mobile games have become ridiculously lucrative over the past year
by Guest Tero Kuittinen- 0 replies
Why was there such a media storm over Flappy Bird? Why is the upcoming IPO of King getting so much coverage? Maybe because mobile game apps are becoming the dominant force in out culture. According to a new survey by App Annie, consumer spending in-game apps has soared to more than double the size of spending on digital music. The survey covers the United States, the big Euro markets, Japan and South Korea. The annual growth of consumer spending on game apps is still a titanic 130%. The annual growth of digital movies and digital music is stuck in the relatively anemic 10-20% bracket. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies

We’ve been getting a couple hints from HTC about upcoming devices, and now Drew Bamford, who’s the lead software designer at HTC, has given a few hints of his own at Mobile World Congress this week. When Drew was asked about what’s to come in the next few years, Bamford had this to say about HTC’s plans for their upcoming March 25th announcement: “I think the great thing is that you won’t have to wait three years or even a year. On March 25th, we’re going to have a lot more to talk about with some new experiences that you’ll be very excited about. And really, what we’re doing there is capitalizing on the experiences that have been successful in HTC Sense 5 and 5.…

by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies

It’s always fun when we get to see a leaked image of a highly anticipated device before its release. Chinese certification agency TENAA, the equivalent of our FCC, has recently certified the Oppo Find 7. The documentation includes live photos of the device, one of which you can see above. The photos confirm the phablet’s design that had already been leaked. As a reminder, the Oppo Find 7 will come in two versions – one with a 5.5″ 1080p display and another with a 5.5″ QHD (2560 x 1600) screen. According to leaked benchmark scores, both will be powered by the Snapdragon 800 chipset (four 2.3GHz Krait 400 cores, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM), pack 16GB storage and offer…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/71cd7763c9d550495fc3d680afffb27f.jpg In case you haven't noticed, Google is not at all happy about having to sift through thousands of different takedown requests from citizens in Europe who want to be "forgotten" in its search results. In an editorial written for The Guardian, Google chief legal officer David Drummond says that Google has so far received 70,000 takedown requests and they aren't all from some poor kid whose most embarrassing moment got memorialized by a viral YouTube video. Samsung releases new alarm app that allows you to dedicate processing power to science
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Samsung has decided to take advantage of unused processing power, and allow the user to dedicate it to science. Samsung announced that they were collaborating with Cheil Worldwide, and the result of this collaboration is the new Samsung alarm app, called “Power Sleep.” The app essentially uses unused CPU cycles to create a “supercloud computer” which is accessible to researchers all over the world. The app only works in the background while the user is asleep, and the cycles are used to compute data that is under 1 MB. The data is then collated by researchers at the University of Vienna, and turned into an open-source protein-calculation database that can be used to fi…

Samsung just punched a hole in BlackBerry’s firewall
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

As if having a 0.6% market share wasn't bad enough, BlackBerry is going to have to face yet another challenge in 2014. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung has just received an order for 7,000 smartphones from the United States Army, and has nearly completed another order that will send thousands more sent to the NSA. Although this relatively small order does not counteract BlackBerry's huge win within the Pentagon from last month, the Journal writes that this new deal may open the flood gates. Continue reading... Over the past few years, Microsoft has managed to get their operating system on to giant coffee table like devices. After shifting the Surface name over to their tablet line of devices, the Windows coffee tables are now dubbed PixelSense devices. 3M and Ideum decided the world of computer powered coffee tables could use some variety and they are now preparing a couple Android powered devices for consumers. Two versions of the Platform Multitouch Coffee Table will be produced, a 32-inch and a 46-inch version. Both sport 1080p displays with up to 60 touch points, a 3.7GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. Even though they have some seri…

Here’s how much storage you’ll actually get on the Galaxy S5
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Even though Samsung has significantly cut down on new bloatware for its Galaxy S5 smartphone, the company did not reveal how much storage space is available to the user on the phone. Independent reports from GottaBeMobile and Android Central have confirmed that the Galaxy S5 ROM takes up even more space than the Galaxy S4’s ROM, however. Out of 16GB on the base Galaxy S5 model, over 8GB is occupied by the Galaxy S5’s software, with the rest available to the user. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

If you can't beat them, join them. At least that's what Amazon is hoping its brick-and-mortar competition will say as it extends an olive branch to retailers that could be beneficial for everyone involved. The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon is currently in talks with several popular brands, such as Ralph Lauren and J. Crew, along with ten major retailers to start showing listings of their merchandise on Amazon.com. According to the Journal, "Amazon wouldn't sell the goods directly; the listings would be links to the retailers' own sites." Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

‘Netflix for pirates’ is already dead
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

The pirate's answer to Netflix is now offline. Popcorn Time streamed dozens of free movies straight from their torrent files to computers all around the world, and the creators never stopped claiming that it was all completely legal. They even checked four times! But despite the massive response, much of which the creators say was positive, the app has been permanently disconnected. According to the message that now dominates the front page of the app's website, the creators no longer want to be a part of "endless debates about piracy and copyright, legal threats and the shady machinery that makes us feel in danger for doing what we love." We'll be keeping an eye out to s…

Amazon’s ‘set-top box’ will reportedly be a Chromecast-style dongle
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

It looks like Amazon is taking a page from Google and not Apple with its soon-to-be-announced TV streaming device that reportedly isn't a set-top box but is instead a Chromecast-style dongle. And unnamed sources tell TechCrunch that not only will the new device resemble the Chromecast but that it may also do Google one better by having "support for streaming full PC game titles, and as such might be able to compete with consoles including the Xbox and PlayStation, instead of just Android-powered living room game devices." For comparison, second-place Google's brand was valued at $68.6 billion, third-place Microsoft's brand was valued at $62.8 billion and seventh-place Amazon's brand was valued at $45.1 billion. Silicon Valley Business Journal says that Brand Finance reached its figures "by estimating the royalty rate that would be charged for use of the brand and factoring in future revenue." Interestingly, the top three most valuable brands also happen to the …
