T-Mobile’s network is getting better, but not for the reason you think
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
T-Mobile knows it has more work to do to improve its network and GigaOM reports that it's going a step beyond just upgrading mobile data speeds. According to GigaOM, the Pride of John Legere has started installing antennae that use 4-by-2 multiple input-multiple output (4×2 MIMO) technology, which the publication says has the potential to make T-Mobile's LTE network vastly better for end users, even if it does nothing to boost speeds. by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Did you think Microsoft would unceremoniously axe the Nokia X line of budget Android phones the minute it finalized its acquisition of the one-time Finnish mobile icon's handset division? Well, think again. Former Nokia CEO and current Microsoft exec Stephen Elop said on Friday that the newly formed Microsoft Mobile division will remain "committed to continuing our support for feature phones, the Asha family, and the Nokia X family of devices, announced at the Mobile World Congress in February." Google Everywhere: Google’s voice assistant might take over Android
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Seemingly out of nowhere, the war of the personal digital assistants is upon us. Apple started the trend with Siri in 2011. Microsoft made waves earlier this month with the official reveal of Cortana, an assistant that could single-handedly revitalize the Windows Phone OS. Not to be outdone, Android Police reports that Google is working on a major overhaul of its own personal assistant, bringing voice activation to every Google app on an Android device. Microsoft may halt Xbox One production as inventory piles up
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Although the Xbox One's success has been repeatedly overshadowed by the dominance of the PlayStation 4, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood hinted in a recent earnings call that market saturation for the new console might be approaching sooner than expected. Gamasutra reports that Microsoft shipped 1.2 million Xbox Ones in the third fiscal quarter (January 1st - March 31st), which contributed heavily to the 41% year-over-year increase in revenue for Microsoft's Devices and Consumer Hardware division. Unfortunately, it appears that those millions of Xbox One consoles aren't exactly flying off the shelves. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

United Airlines to passenger: Take off Google Glass
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
Another day, another Google Glass security concern. As the new tech continues to make its way into the mainstream, these occurrences will become all the more common. Having something that sits on your face, sticking out like a sore thumb, with a camera on it, will make anyone a bit apprehensive. It’s something that Glass Explorers — pioneers on the wearable glasses front — continue to face. Well one glass explorer, who has already had her fair share of news coverage regarding Glass, has had another negative experience. Cecilia Abadie, who won a case against a ticket for driving with Glass, was told by United Airlines flight attendants to take off her Google Glass. S…

The they will, they won’t saga of Amazon releasing a smartphone seems to be heading firmly in the “they will” direction, and we’re finally seeing leaks and rumors about the “killer features” that the company will be boasting to sell its new smartphone. Currently, Amazon is toying with the idea of adding customizations to the device, the device is said to have 3D effects among other hardware and software tweaks. According to “trusted sources” close to BGR though, those would be just a few selling points among an even larger selling point. According to these sources, Amazon would be offering “Prime Data.” Amazon isn’t saying much about the idea but it might be possib…

LyveHome personal cloud device for media open for pre-orders
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
While cloud storage providers continue to battle for market share and a profitable business model, some people are turning to personal cloud devices. These devices typically connect to a home network and function like cloud storage services via user provided hardware as opposed to a corporate server farm. At CES 2014 we saw a new entrant in this market, LyveHome, a from Seagate Technology spin-off Live Minds, Inc. being headed up by former Apple executive Tim Bucher. The LyveHome web site is now accepting pre-orders for the $300 device. LyveHome includes a 2 TB hard drive along with other ports and slots that will allow for connection of additional storage devices or m…

Samsung Galaxy S 5 camera software walkthrough
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Samsung made some changes to the Camera app with the Galaxy S 5. It still offers a lot of different modes, but they simplified things and added the ability to further edit after the fact. The Mode button is still the heart of everything, but you will find fewer choices. Drama Shot, Best Face, Best Shot, Eraser Mode, and Panning Shot (new) are now part of “Shot & More.” When using this mode, you will be able to choose which effect you want to apply to the photo, and you don’t have to do it right away. You will also find a “Download” option for installing more modes from Samsung Apps. This makes perfect sense since you don’t need to clutter your phone with modes that…

How to use ‘Shot & More’ for Drama Shots, Eraser, and more on the Galaxy S 5
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Samsung condensed a few of the camera modes into “Shot & More” with the Galaxy S 5. This makes it a lot easier as all you have to do is press the shutter button, and it will take a series of burst shots. Soon after, the device will tell you what editing modes are available based on what happened in the shot. You will have your choice of Best Shot, Best Face, Drama Shot, Eraser, and Panning Shot. All options were available last year as separate modes other than Panning Shot, which is brand new. The best part of all of this is that you can make as many edits as you want after the fact, which is something you couldn’t do on the Galaxy S 4. In this video, I walk you th…

Former Apple designer reveals what it was like to create apps for the first iPhone
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Francisco Tolmasky is a 29-year old app developer who recently launched an iOS game called Bonsai Slice that lets users swing the tablet to cut down virtual objects. However, he’ll be remembered for a far more ambitious project: designing the Safari mobile browser in the first iPhone. In an interview with The New York Times, the former Apple employee in charge of one of the most important features of the iPhone shared some of his stories about Apple, including several Steve Jobs anecdotes. Another reason to love Google Fiber: Fast, free public WiFi
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
People love Google Fiber. The lightning-fast yet shockingly affordable Google broadband service covers a small fraction of 1% of American households, but consumers across the nation are clamoring for it. For those somehow still unaware, Google Fiber offers completely free 5Mbps broadband service to households in the two U.S. cities in which it is offered, or 1Gbps service for just $70 per month. To get an idea of how great that package is, I pay $60 per month for 30/5Mbps service (30Mbps download, 5Mbps upload) from Time Warner Cable. Now, it looks like people will soon have yet another reason to love Google Fiber: Free public WiFi. Continue reading... Via BR…

You must be at least this tall to take a ride on Cortana
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Microsoft’s recently unveiled voice-based virtual assistant Cortana, named after the popular Halo guide, will not be available to everybody, America’s Markets reveals. Since Cortana is considered an online service, only 13-year olds or older will be able to use the voice features of Windows Phone 8.1, as Microsoft has to abide to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that describes how much information children under 13 can share online without their parents consent. Nokia manager says goodbye to the company he loves in a moving open letter The story of Nokia is far from over, but Friday marks the end of its most enthralling chapter thus far. The company was founded nearly 150 years ago and it went through a number of iterations before it became the cell phone giant most of us think of now. But as of April 25th, Nokia is no longer a cell phone company. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

How to save the Internet
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Net neutrality died back in January of this year when a U.S. Appeals Court struck down the Federal Communications Commission’s 2010 order imposing certain regulations on wireline broadband service providers. People across the country were infuriated, and rightfully so. But news emerged earlier this week suggesting that the Federal Communications Commission would once again try to instate a new set of regulations to help keep a level playing field on the Web. Has the Internet been saved? Is net neutrality coming back? The answer, according to tens of thousands of angry consumers across the U.S., is no. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

One of the more interesting companies to come out of CES this year was LyveMinds, a who's who team of people from companies like Netflix, Amazon and Intel, all lead by Tim Bucher, an ex-Apple employee who helped work on the initial iPhone. Lyve's purpose is to make all of your moments and memories available on all of your devices without thought, synced and backed up seamlessly in the background, and a big part of the company's strategy is something called LyveHome. Google testing a mobile UI redesign called LEGO
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
Google is apparently testing a mobile UI redesign called LEGO, which is essentially a sandbox for mobile search. The UI looks a little different than it does now, but what really stands out is the new super smooth animations. It’s possible to access the redesign here on mobile, but Google may or may not block it soon. Also, since this is an experiment there’s debug data in the image searches , and it’s suggested that you append “bacon” to your searches. It’s also a little buggy, so keep that in mind. Hit the break for a video showing the new UI! Click here to view the embedded video. Come comment on this article: Google testing a mobile UI redesign call…

Have a PlayStation 4? PlayStation 3? Xbox One? Put down your controller right now and pick up your smartphone (as if you did not have it in your hand already). With the latest update to the Hulu Plus application, you can control the Hulu Plus gaming console apps from your handheld device. To get started, all you need is for your account to be logged in on the gaming console and the mobile app. The app will then detect the gaming console and a Cast button will work with it the same way it would with Chromecast. Playing, pausing, and resuming on another device is all capable. Hit the break for the introductory video and download links. Play Store Download Li…

Google+ might be killed off after Vic Gundotra’s departure
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

Earlier today, Vic Gundotra left Google. Gundotra’s primary responsibility within the company was their (in)famous social network, Google+. Now that he’s leaving the company, many are wondering what’s going to happen to G+ in the coming months, and while no one has a crystal clear answer, sources are confirming that the social network is going to see some drastic changes and cutbacks. The biggest change is that Google will stop considering G+ as a product, but instead as a platform. This means Google won’t be trying to compete with networks like Twitter, but will instead use the social network as a launching point for other products. A Google spokesperson denied tho…

New Galaxy S 5 commercial shows how its filled with innovations that make everyday moments...
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

The Galaxy S 5 sure has a lot of features on it, but do consumers really care? Samsung seems to think so. In their latest commercial, they detail some of these features such as Selective Focus, enhancing photos before you take the shot, how S Health helps you with your overall fitness, and how you don’t have to worry about spilling a drink on it. Of course a Samsung commercial isn’t a Samsung commercial without a dig at Apple. The iPhone isn’t the focal point in this spot, but they do mention that the GS5 has double the megapixels. Galaxy S5 launch sales reportedly better than iPhone 5s launch
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

After multiple reports revealed that the Galaxy S5 is apparently selling better than its predecessor, a new infographic says that the Galaxy S5 has enjoyed better launch sales than the iPhone 5s did a few months ago during its own launch. iQmetrix measured Galaxy S5 sales during its launch weekend, from April 11th to April 13th, sampling over 15,000 stores across North America, and compared them with iPhone 5s sales from September 20th to September 23rd. The company has gathered its data from its RQ Retail Management system that’s used by wireless retailers in North America to process some 14.5 million handset transactions each year.
