Netflix set to raise prices for new members by a dollar or two in some countries
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Don’t worry, this will not be anywhere near as outrageous as Netflix’s infamous price hike in 2011. But yes, Netflix does plan on imposing a one or two dollar price hike in some countries in order to cover the cost of new content and improving technology. For current Netflix members, everything will remain the same for the foreseeable future. However, new members will feel the wrath of the price hike. Here is the quote from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings: Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only. Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/bc053d344370b22869e2d7231d5ac02a.jpg Samsung may have publicly denied Galaxy S5 Prime rumors, but evidence suggesting that the company is going forward with a better Galaxy S5 version keeps popping up online. After having been spotted in a GFXBench benchmark test not too long ago, the SM-G906 – believed to be the Galaxy S5 Prime version – was seen on Indian import site Zauba. According to the posted manifest, four SM-G906K units have been shipped from South Korea for “R&D purpose.” Many previous Galaxy-branded devices were spotted in similar shipping manifests before Samsung launched them. http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/fda95d58e44c3bfe536023574c0b2261.jpg If getting unlimited streaming for $7.99 per month sounds like a deal that's too good to be true, that's probably because it is. The Wall Street Journal reports that Netlfix plans to raise its prices by between $1 to $2 a month for new subscribers, which would represent an increase of as much as 25% from current prices. The Journal says that current subscribers will keep their rates "for a generous time period," but they too might have to pay higher prices in the future as well. News of future price increases came as part of Netflix's Q1 2014 earnings report, where the company said it added …

Netflix officially comes out against the Comcast-TWC merger
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
In addition to news on possible price increases, Netflix on Monday also officially took a stance against the proposed $45 billion merger of Comcast and Time Warner Cable. In its letter to shareholders released Monday, Netflix said that a combined Comcast and TWC would "possess even more anticompetitive leverage to charge arbitrary interconnection tolls for access to their customers." To back up its reasoning, Netflix said that the decline of DSL has made cable Internet the default broadband technology for most Americans and claimed that if the merger were approved then many American households would have "Comcast as the only option for truly high-speed broadband" that off…

LG G3 mini appears in leaked documents with 720p display, 8-megapixel camera
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

LG's bite-sized G2 mini was finally unveiled at MWC 2014 in February, six months after the launch of the flagship G2, but it looks like the next mini hero phone is already in the works. My LG Cell Phones has obtained leaked documents which show a device listed with the name "B2MINI" and model number LG-D725. The next four rows retain the B2 name, listing an unannounced device for each of the four major U.S. carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. These are likely codenames for the LG G3 and its G3 mini counterpart, although it's worth noting that the G3 mini is only listed for AT&T. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Domino’s Pizza now allows you to pay with Google Wallet
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies

Domino’s Pizza has been a fan the mobile front, what with its app that allows you to order a pizza conveniently from an app on your smartphone. Today the company is showing even more support by allowing users to pay with Google Wallet. Their pizza app, will now show an option to pay with Google Wallet — giving you another option to use. The pizza company isn’t stopping there though. If you order $10+ worth of pizza between now and June 15, you’ll receive a free specialty chicken. Not chicken wings, but a chicken. You’ll receive it in one of four flavors, depending on your tastes of course. That being said, we have the full presser after the break. Customers wh…

HTC reportedly tapped for 8-inch Google Nexus tablet
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
A new report from DigiTimes appears to strengthen the rumors that Google has turned to HTC as a partner in development of their next tablet device in the Nexus line. Previous reports suggested Google was working on a successor to the 10-inch Nexus tablet to be released some time in the third quarter of 2014. This latest report suggests that changes in the manufacturing partner are only the tip of the iceberg with Google possibly scaling down the size of the device which could be their last tablet. The latest report suggests Google has partnered with HTC to produce an 8-inch tablet slated for released in the third quarter. The choice of HTC is a bit odd given HTC’s lack…

Samsung opens new Innovation Museum
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
In an apparent effort to prop up its image as an innovator, and possibly get youth exposed to Samsung via school field trips, the company has opened the Samsung Innovation Museum at its Digital City campus in Suwon, South Korea. Samsung recently opened the doors for a quick preview of the new facility that revealed the museum, while perhaps not worthy of a trip in and of itself, is a worthwhile stop for anyone who is in the area. According to Samsung the museum gives the public a chance “to see where we’ve come from.” The museum is a five story complex and appears to become more Samsung-centric the higher up you travel. The first floor primarily focuses on the history …

Expert witness claims Apple’s damage calculations wrong
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
In the Apple v. Samsung trial currently underway, one of the issues Samsung is arguing is that Apple has grossly over-exaggerated their damages claim. Apple is asking for more than $2 billion in damages based on the alleged violation of five patents. New York University professor Tulin Erdem was brought in late last week as an expert witness on Samsung’s behalf to counter Apple’s own expert regarding the amount of damages. Erdem indicated that Apple’s expert, John Hauser, teaches consumers about the very features at issue in the case. If it were not for Hauser educating the consumers about the features in the first place, no would would place any value on the features …

by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies

According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple and Google have been offering promotional packages to developers in order to be the first to feature various games on their respective platforms. This promotional perk includes placing apps on hot spots on the app store page and features list. The same report indicates that Apple previously offered Electronic Arts to promote its highly anticipated Plants vs. Zombies 2 on its App Store and in return, EA launched the popular title on the iOS platform 2 months before releasing it for Android. However, Gameloft, developer of Asphalt, refused to accept the deal offered by Apple, instead, it chose to launch the g…

Video: Meet the incredible wireless charger that can power 40 smartphones at once
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

If there's anything cooler than wirelessly charging your smartphone, it's wirelessly charging 40 smartphones at the same time. GigaOM points us to an experimental wireless charger developed by The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) that can charge up to 40 phones at the same time from as far as 15 feet away. Chun T. Rim, a professor of Nuclear & Quantum Engineering at KAIST, says that the new Dipole Coil Resonant System (DCRS) has "proved the possibility of a new remote power delivery mechanism that has never been tried at such a long distance." How to use the 5 coolest new features on the Galaxy S5
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Samsung's latest flagship smartphone launched just over a week ago and early reports suggest that sales have been strong thus far, having reached into the millions after just one day of availability. Samsung did a good job of toning down the feature spam on its latest phone, but it still added plenty of cool new features that could get lost in the shuffle if Galaxy S5 owners don't take the time to search through every corner of Samsung's software. Facebook ads are about to invade mobile apps from other developers
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies

Facebook is about to launch a mobile advertising network that could potentially take on Google’s. According to Re/code, Facebook will launch its mobile advertising network at the end of this month during the annual F8 developer conference. Re/code didn’t have much more information about the network, but the move makes sense for Facebook. Facebook has incredibly rich data on its users, allowing advertisers to target specific segments of the population. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Galaxy S5 draws rush of trade-ins from Samsung phone owners; iPhone users uninterested
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

New flagship smartphone launches are often accompanied by a rush of users trading in older phone models as they upgrade, and data surrounding which models saw increased trade-in volumes can give us a good idea of where business is coming from as people purchase new phones. If data provided to BGR by Gazelle is any indication, early Galaxy S5 buyers were already Samsung device owners in large part, with a comparably small amount of new business coming over from the iPhone. Moto G LTE and Moto G Ferrari could be released soon
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

On top of the expected Moto E, Motorola might also release two variants of the Moto G. A Moto G LTE and Moto G Ferrari were leaked on website Xataka. The Moto G LTE is pretty much self explanatory as it will probably be the same Moto G that has become our favorite budget phone, but with LTE. We actually saw what appears to be this very phone clear the FCC back in February with AT&T compatible LTE bands. The Moto G Ferrari is something that we really don’t know much about. Motorola has released “Ferrari” branded phones in the past, and we did see a rumor of a Moto X “Ferrari” edition last July. That obviously never came to fruition. This phone could end up wit…

LG G3 Mini appears in leaked document and UA profile revealing a few specs
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The news and rumors are starting to heat up regarding the LG G3, but the G3 Mini is also starting to make some noise as well. It just appeared in a leaked document revealing a few specs. The G3 is codenamed B2, so it’s no shocker that the G3 mini is codenamed B2 Mini. The leaked model is D725, and appears to be destined for AT&T. It’s running Android 4.4.2 KitKat and it will sport an 8MP camera. The D725 was also found in a UA profile on LG’s website that revealed it has a 720p display, but we don’t know the actual size of the display. Will the LG G3 Mini be revealed at the same time as the LG G3? In the past, manufacturers haven’t announced both flagshi…

A little less than two weeks ago, there was a story involving a prominent rise of a fake virus scanning app called “Virus Shield.” In its moments in the Play Store it garnered over 10,000 downloads and a pretty impressive rating of 4.7. However a break down by the folks over at Android Police showed the app was nothing more but a few images and a toggle that did not much of anything. The app was a fake. After the news broke, Google quickly removed the app from the Play Store. While the developer did tell The Guardian that the version of the app that was uploaded to Play Store was a mistake and not the correct version of the app, the developers shoddy history doesn’t…

OnePlus One camera samples compared to Nikon 3100 DSLR, 4K sample video too
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

We saw a bunch of sample shots taken from the upcoming OnePlus One camera, but now we have even more images, this time they are compared to the Nikon 3100 DSLR, as well as the Oppo Find 5. There are slew of comparisons from a variety of situations, including bright light, macros, low light, and extreme low light. All cameras were in Auto mode, and no tripods were used. OnePlus One – Low Light Nikon D3100 DSLR – Low Light I don’t think we are ready to drop DSLRs just yet. HTC seems to think we will be ready to do so in about 12-18 months, but the OnePlus One should keep people happy until then. You can hit the 1st source link for many more …

[New Chromecast App] – Cloudcaster allows you to cast files from the cloud
by Guest Jack Holt- 0 replies
With Google opening up the Chromecast SDK to developers we’re finally seeing an influx of castable apps in the Play Store. Today we’re seeing a new app by the name of CloudCaster. The app acts much like AllCast does in that it casts local media, but it’s primary focus is the media that’s in the cloud. CloudCaster supports the following: Direct streaming support ★ Files on your device ★ DLNA (Android 4.0 and up) ★ Google Drive ★ OneDrive ★ Bitcasa ★ Box ★ WebDAV Streaming via device ★ SMB/CIFS ★ Copy.com ★ SugarSync Currently the only issues with the app is that Dropbox isn’t working for new users. There is a free and premium version of the app…

Samsung really, really wants to show you that it’s innovative

If there's one thing in the world that is guaranteed to drive Samsung crazy, it's alleging that the company isn't innovative. And now Samsung is going yet another step in its quest to shed its copycat image by opening up a new "Samsung Innovation Museum" at its Samsung Digital City complex in Suwon, Korea that shows us all of the major innovations of the last couple of centuries, from the invention of the lightbulb to Samsung's innovations in display technologies. This isn't an official count but by our estimation, Apple's iOS App Store is currently home to about 4,973,812 task manager apps. The reason is simple: task managers fall squarely into the category of apps that are very easy for developers to make. Making them well, however, is a different story entirely — which is exactly why we feel the need to tell you when one of the most interesting and creative task apps out there is made available for free for a limited time. iPhone malware exists, but the risk is nothing like it is with Android
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

While most reports detail Android malware efforts from malicious parties looking to take advantage of Android's popularity in order to steal personal data and money from users, iOS isn’t completely safe from malware. A Reddit user has discovered an application running in the background on an iOS device that turned out to be a malware application hunting for Apple IDs. However, there’s a big catch that allows the app to work: the attacked iOS devices have to be jailbroken first. Moreover, the user will have to download certain apps from untrusted sources after the jailbreak, to get this new piece of software. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report
