ZTE has had a couple of big launches over the last month, but that isn’t going to stop the company from having another one! Today they began teasing their upcoming smartphone, the ZTE Star 1. The retail box of the device was leaked a few days ago, and now we have the first pictures of the device, showing quite a sleek looking design! Despite the classy design, it seems to have taken some cues from Huawei with their Ascend P6. The source that brought the photos also mentions that the design of the device will be heavily marketed during the marketing campaign, but that doesn’t mean that the internal specs of the device aren’t good. In fact, the device boasts a 1080p disp…

Google wants more eye real estate with camera-embedded contact lenses
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Glass is not enough for Google. They want more of the real estate located on your eyes, as crazy as it sounds. To do this, Google has patented a system in which cameras would be embedded into contact lenses. What would this accomplish? Taking photographs of exactly what a person sees. You may recall that the company was talking to the FDA about contact lenses to measure glucose levels. This, however, takes the purpose of these contact lenses much further. And Google may want to hurry as Samsung is reportedly working on a set of smart contact lenses, too. IHS: ‘no breakthroughs,’ ‘nothing earth-shattering’ about Galaxy S5
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
Research firm IHS says the Galaxy S5 costs $256 to make, Re/code reports, a price that’s significantly higher than previous Samsung high-end handsets but which is becoming the norm for the company’s new flagships. While the $256 bill of materials for the handset does not account for the cost of software, distribution and marketing, Samsung is expected to enjoy a gross margin of about 60% on the Galaxy S5. Have an extra $1,500 lying around? Anyone can buy Google Glass right now
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

If geek is the new chic, it doesn't get any more chic than Google Glass. Google's connected eyewear represents the company's first attack on the emerging wearables market. While most other companies are content to start with wrist-worn fitness trackers and smartwatches, Google has taken a much more interesting approach by slapping a display on face-mounted hardware. The result is a unique experience with plenty of fascinating use cases. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

As if we didn't already have enough reasons to be wary of the proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable, GigaOM gives us a new one: Data caps. GigaOM points out that Time Warner Cable and Cablevision are the only two major cable companies in the United States that haven't yet imposed data caps on their customers but that could change if TWC gets gobbled up by Comcast as part of a $45 billion acquisition. by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies

The next version of the HTC One (M8) was just released, but jealous owners of the previous version (M7) have something to be excited about. The company announced today that will push out an update to the original HTC One (M7) that’ll include Sense 6, the same user interface that’s running on HTC’s newer One (M8). HTC executive Jason Mackenzie confirmed that the update will make its way to devices by the end of May. There are a lot of new features in Sense 6.0, but its unclear which ones will be compatible for last year’s device. Surely the UI will receive a pretty big improvement, and apps like BlinkFeed and the camera will be updated, but all of the gestures are proba…

Never miss a turn again with glow-in-the-dark roads
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

Dan Roosegaarde is tired of our stagnant pavement. Our roads have remained unchanged for decades, which inspired Roosegaarde and his team at Studio Roosegaarde to innovate in the form of glow-in-the-dark road markings. Wired.co.uk has drawn our attention to these fluorescent markings, which have replaced the prototypical street lights over a 500m stretch of highway in the Netherlands, providing a cost-efficient alternative that doesn't require electricity and looks pretty amazing to boot. Maker of Android flashlight app with 50M downloads avoids fine after selling location data
by Guest Ben Zigterman- 0 replies
This past December, we reported that a popular Android app called Brightest Flashlight could do more than just shine light. Brightest Flashlight was a simple flashlight app that was highly-rated and had over 50 million installs. However, it had one devious, hidden feature: It would share personal data, such as your location, with advertisers. The FTC caught wind of this and began investigating the developer. According to GigaOm, the FTC reached a settlement with the developer last week, and it looks like he got away easy. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Surprise! Paying off Comcast does have its benefits. Less than two months after coming to a peering arrangement with Comcast where it agreed to make regular payments to the cable giant to ensure high-quality streaming for its customers, Netflix reported that average streaming speeds have surged by 65% on Comcast's network. In fact, the increase in streaming speeds was so large that Comcast jumped ahead a full six spots in Netflix's rankings of Internet service providers and now is the fifth-fastest ISP for Netflix streaming in the United States with an average speed of 2.5Mbps.
