Amidst power struggle before Supreme Court, Aereo ready to release Chromecast support
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Aereo, the TV service that uses a network of antennas to capture airwave television broadcasts that users can then watch on their computers and mobile devices, is ready to release Chromecast support for their Android app beginning May 29th. That could change though as Aereo’s service is currently being challenged by ABC who contends Aereo is violating copyright law by retransmitting the over-the-air broadcast signals. The case is before the Supreme Court. The Aereo service starts at $8/month for access to the TV channels you would normally be able to pick up with a normal antenna. That may not seem like such a great benefit and adds an extra step in displaying content,…

If you want some extra cash to go towards the device, however, Amazon is offering the Galaxy S5 through their trade-in program. Essentially the program allows users to be able to trade in their old phones for Amazon gift cards, which you can use to buy a new device such as Samsung‘s new flagship. Verizon, Sprint join AT&T by removing Download Booster from their GS5 while T-Mobile keeps it
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S 5 on AT&T, you are not alone. Verizon and Sprint have followed AT&T’s decision to ditch Download Booster for their variants of Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone. For those unaware, Download Booster meshes WiFi and data connections to really pull down a signal. These carriers have opted to omit the feature likely due to data caps being in the way for many customers. There is one carrier, though, that is not removing Download Booster. Who else but T-Mobile. The nation’s Un-carrier is even flaunting the fact that it is keeping the feature around. So while Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint Galaxy S 5 owners cannot enjoy the power of Do…

http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/b24fc87a93a2edeb49443e3a07ccd900.jpg Naughty Dog announced on Thursday that the critically acclaimed action-adventure game The Last of Us will be coming to the PlayStation 4 this summer. One of the most requested console conversions of the generation, The Last of Us retains its spot as one of the ten highest rated PS3 games on Metacritic, garnering near universal praise when it released last year. Before the PlayStation 4 even hit stores, fans of the game were already clamoring for a next-gen conversion, but developer Naughty Dog remained silent on the matter until this week. Sprint scores exclusive edition of the HTC One (M8)
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

It appears that not all HTC One (M8) handsets are created equal, at least in the U.S., where Sprint has apparently scored an exclusive version of the handset that packs Harman/Kardon speakers. The news was tweeted earlier this week by gadget leaker @evleaks and was then confirmed on the xda-developers forums. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

There are plenty of terrific new features in Samsung's soon-to-be-released Galaxy S5 but the one that's gone unheralded is a built-in kill switch that you can use to make the phone completely shut down in the event that it's stolen. ZDNet Korea reports that once the Galaxy S5 is reported as stolen, it "will automatically be locked by authorized accesses and data can be remotely deleted when requested by the original owner." This isn't the first Samsung smartphone to come with a built-in kill switch either, as the Galaxy Note 3 also had one when it was released last year. ZDNet Korea also says that LG is planning to release its own kill switch-enabled smartphone this year,…

Comixology shot up the download charts when it first hit the iPad, bringing comic books from all of the top publishers to screens around the world. Samsung Galaxy S 5 repairability not looking so hot
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
We had a chance to see a teardown of the Galaxy S 5 last month, but we were still awaiting iFixit’s version. The previous teardown made it clear that the GS5 won’t be easy to repair, and iFixit agrees 100%. After a complete teardown, they concluded that the Galaxy S 5 is a 5 out of 10 for repairability. The biggest issue is the display. Unfortunately it needs to be removed first in order to replace any part other than the battery. The display has a “significant amount of adhesive,” which makes it very difficult to remove without damaging it. Last year’s Galaxy S 4 received a score of 8 out of 10, which is a big difference, and one of the reasons why Samsung has st…

How to create perfect Video Highlights on the HTC One (M8)
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
Video Highlights is probably the coolest application that any Android manufacturer has ever come up with, at least in my humble opinion. HTC doesn’t promote it enough. Video Highlights first debuted with Sense 5 on the HTC One (M7), and has really matured with Sense 6 and the All New HTC One (M8). If you’re not familiar with HTC’s Video Highlights feature, it will automatically produce a professionally looking video of various images, Zoes, and other videos. You can select content from certain events, locations, albums, dates, or even your starred favorites. Just take a look at the results from my vacation last year. There are twelve themes to choose from that inclu…

AU Optronics stake claim to world’s first Quad HD AMOLED display
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
Taiwanese company AU Optronics claims they have produced the world’s first Quad HD AMOLED display to be shown at the China Electronic Information Expo (CITE 2014) this week. According to AU Optronics, the new screen is 5.7-inches in size running at 2560 x 1440 resolution which produces 513 ppi. For comparison, the Oppo Find 7a will come with a 5.5-inch 538 ppi Quad HD screen and the Vivo Xplay 3S is currently selling with a 6-inch display running at 490 ppi. However, both of those units utilize LCD technology. In addition to the 5.7-inch screen, AU Optronics says they also have a 6-inch AMOLED panel running Quad HD. Other panels the company says they have developed inc…

More carriers add HTC One (M8) to retail locations starting today
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies

When HTC announced the HTC One (M8) they also announced their latest flagship device would be available around the globe with more than 230 operators signed up to carry the smartphone. That far-ranging availability did not stop HTC from creating some initial scarcity for the phone by giving Verizon exclusive rights to carry the HTC One (M8) in their retail locations starting on the day of the announcement. In the U.S., if you were not a Verizon customer, you could still order the HTC One (M8) on-line and get it shipped to you. Customers with AT&T or Sprint now have the ability to get their hands on the device prior to making their purchase as Verizon’s exclusivity per…

Google expands Android’s ‘Verify apps’ feature for security
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
Security is something very important these days. And Google is taking the extra step to give the massive amount of Android users it has safe. Android already has the ‘Verify apps’ feature. What this does is scans applications from outside sources and not from Google Play. But now, Google will make the ‘Verify apps’ feature continually scan your device for applications that are rather suspicious. Chances are you will not ever be affected by a suspicious application, though. Google says “that fewer than 0.18% of installs in the last year occurred after someone received a warning that the app was potentially harmful.” So if you are downloading applications from somewhere …

66% of players quit free-to-play mobile games after a single day
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

The Candy Crush Sagas and Clashes of Clans of the app market appear to be the exceptions to the following rule: A majority of smartphone gamers don't stick with free-to-play games for longer than 24 hours. Re/code has shared the results from app testing firm Swrve's "April 2014 New Player Report" that tracks the tendencies of 10 million players over the course of 90 days. With more than 30 titles being monitored, including titles from Activision, Epic Games and Gameloft, Swrve found that 66% of new players abandoned games with microtransactions almost immediately, spending an average of 45 cents over the course of the three month study. While email has made our work easier in many ways, it's also made it hard for us to really escape the office, particularly now that our smartphones are sure to remind us every time something urgent needs our immediate attention. The Guardian reports that French employers' federations and labor unions have just signed an agreement that requires French employees to shut off their work-related smartphones after they leave the office, which means that their bosses won't be able to nag them once they go home for the day. Samsung’s latest tablet innovation is… a hole?
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Samsung has been sued by Apple several times over claims that the company's Galaxy tablets have stolen the iPad's design identity. Back in 2011, one judge even illustrated how similar Samsung's slates were to the iPad. She held a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and an iPad above her head and asked Samsung's own attorney which one was which. In a painful bit of irony, Samsung's counsel could not distinguish them. One thing is certain, however: No one will mistake a Samsung tablet with a big hole in the corner for an iPad. Google to allow anyone in the U.S. to buy Glass for one day only
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies

The Explorer Program has been closed to the public ever since its inception, but according to The Verge, that might change later this month. A leaked document reveals that Google is considering opening up sales to the public, "where any U.S. resident would be able to purchase Glass (through google.com/glass) and join the Explorer Program." The brand new HTC One (M8) features what is hands down the most beautiful design we've seen on any widely available smartphone. If Xiaomi's short history has taught us anything, however, the new One is in store for some stiff competition in the coming months. The scrappy Chinese smartphone maker has modeled its business after Apple and, just like Apple, its handsets thus far have been beautiful and powerful. Now, according to a new leak, it looks like Xiaomi has a new gem in store. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Sonos just got a lot better today
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

I thought it would never happen, but it did. Google Play Music is now partnering with the Sonos music system. Now Sonos users from around the world, in 25 countries, can stream directly to Sonos from within the Google Play Music app on devices or from the Sonos app. If by chance you aren’t familiar with Sonos, it is probably the easiest way to stream music throughout your entire house. Wireless speakers are as low as $199, and they can be placed anywhere. Now with the addition of Google Play Music, you will have access to your entire 20,000 song library for streaming anywhere in your home. This this a huge step for Google and could open up the doors for more media p…
