Apple raises its damages claim to more than $2 billion against Samsung
by Guest Justin Herrick- 0 replies
No time for pocket change when it comes to Apple and Samsung’s ongoing patent trial. Today, Apple has raised its claim for the jury to go in there favor and award them $2.19 billion in damages. Apple had originally wanted around $2 billion. This number comes from an expert that was brought forward. John R. Hauser of MIT’s Sloan School of Management surveyed almost 1000 owners of either a tablet or smartphone owners. He surveyed them based on what features they typically used. These features were then compared to the ones that Apple and Samsung are fighting about. At the end of it all, Hauser found that the cost of a feature ranged from $32 to $102 per feature. So the n…

LG devices have not been afraid to pose for the camera lately. This time around is the LG L70. On Twitter, @evleaks posted the image above of LG’s little device. This one is for MetroPCS. On the back, carrier branding is nothing intrusive. The front is very calm as well. Humble Bumble PC and Android 9 adds three new games
by Guest Aditya Thawardas- 0 replies
We like to talk about Humble Bumble a lot at TA, and for good reason. If you aren’t familiar, Humble Bumble lets you buy a group of games for a lower than average price, while helping developers and charity. Humble Bumble PC and Android 9 already had six games, but if you pay more than the average, you’ll now get three additional titles: Savant: Ascent, Snyder Arcade, and The Shivah. In Savant: Ascent, you go up a tower in search of a curious orb while battling enemies. Snyder Arcade is “serious old-school gaming,” as you blast objects in outer space in this shoot-em-up. The last game, The Shivah, you are a Jewish Rabbi trying to find the truth behind money left to him…

Video: Samsung hypes the design of the Galaxy S5 in new ad
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Samsung wants to direct your attention to the design of the Galaxy S5 in its latest TV spot, posted to the company's YouTube account on Wednesday. In the 30 second commercial, the camera slowly pans up the bumpy casing of the phone, highlighting the camera, the heart rate sensor, the 5.1-inch 1080p display and the S5's water and dust resistance (which has been thoroughly tested by other sources already). The band-aid chic of the device is much less apparent on the darker model as well, which might explain why Samsung chose this color scheme for the commercial. Unlike the Galaxy Tab Pro ads from earlier in the week, Samsung refrains from taking any shots at the competition…

Greg Christie, a longtime Apple engineer who spearheaded the design of the iPhone's slide-to-unlock feature, is apparently leaving Apple after repeated clashes with Apple senior vice president of design Jony Ive. 9to5Mac's sources say that Christie's departure as Apple's human interface vice president means that Ive has now taken complete control over the design of iOS and that this represents a major shakeup to the iOS design team. by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

Facebook on Wednesday announced new changes to the way it displays ads – its bread and butter – on the desktop, revealing it wants to show its users fewer ads in the right-hand column as before, but make them bigger than their predecessors. The bigger ads will start rolling out later this month, but Facebook will keep supporting both small and big ads in the right-hand column during the transition. This is one of Facebook’s latest changes when it comes the way it displays its ads, after recently deciding to feature autoplay ads in the News Feed. Google Glass might appear on the battlefield as Air Force begins tests
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Google Glass has received more than its fair share of flak since the unveiling, but relentless teasing hasn't dissuaded the United States Air Force from testing Google Glass for military use. VentureBeat reports that the Battlefield Air Targeting Man-Aided (K)nowledge (BATMAN) research team is optimistic about the potential of Glass, most notably because of "its low power, its low footprint, it sits totally above the eyes, and doesn’t block images or hinder vision." New Samsung Galaxy S 5 commercial touts meaningful innovation
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies

Samsung already ran a Galaxy S 5 teaser spot during the Academy Awards, but with the global launch just two days away, they just released their second commercial. Those of you looking for Apple bashing will be disappointed though. This one is just a simple spot showing closeups of the phone along with some key specs including a heart rate monitor and a state-of-the-art camera. Is this the beginning of meaningful innovation? Samsung seems to think so. I guess the consumers will decide starting this Friday. For now, hit the break for the quick 30 second spot. Click here to view the embedded video. T-Mobile launches $40 Simple Starter plan, includes unlimited talk and text and 500 MB of data
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
T-Mobile’s next move is to tackle individual consumers with their latest Simple Starter plan. The plan is good for one line, runs $40 a month and gets you unlimited minutes, unlimited text messages, and 500 MB of data. Similar plans on other carriers run about $60 or $70 per month, but T-Mobile’s plan doesn’t include any type of device subsidy, so you’ll either have to sign up for their Jump program or bring your own phone. With the Jump plan, you’re likely going to be right back to where the other carriers are in terms of pricing. Still, if you’re looking to try out T-Mobile, this is a pretty low-risk plan to jump into. There’s still no contract involved, and it’s …

Winds of change in smartphone market to put squeeze on manufacturers
by Guest Jeff Causey- 0 replies
After news came out earlier this week that Samsung, despite its size and commanding position in the smartphone market, was still expecting a decline in operating profit for the second quarter in a row, many people started wondering what the future may hold for smartphone manufacturers. Analysts indicate the market is already suffering from softening margins and the pressure will be on market leaders, like Samsung and Apple, to make their high-end phones more affordable. Besides the squeeze on margins at the high-end, analysts also see more of the market shifting to other segments, especially low- and mid-range smartphones targeted at the “mass market.” According to ana…

by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies

Google has been internally testing out a new design for the calendar app in Android, and some screenshots of the new interface have leaked out for us to take a look at. The app is picking up a much cleaner look, abandoning the grids and lines that we’re used to in favor a slightly more colorful, flat, minimalist design. There’s a daily agenda feature and a heavy dose of social integration thanks to Google’s massive push with Google+. The daily agenda feature rounds up all of your events for the day, including contact birthdays and information from G+, and pools them into one place for you to look at. Many other third-party calendars and OEM skin calendars have been …

There’s a huge caveat in T-Mobile’s new $40 plan that you need to know about
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
T-Mobile on Wednesday made its next big move to shake up the wireless world by announcing a new cheap $40 wireless plan that offered unlimited voice and text along with 500MB of LTE data per month. The big selling point of this new plan is that, unlike Verizon and AT&T, T-Mobile won't charge you any data overage fees if you go over your monthly allotment. However, there's a big asterisk here that anyone who's interested in subscribing to the plan should know about before taking the plunge. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Game developer says it’s ‘physically impossible’ for Xbox One to match PS4 performance
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies

The Xbox One’s graphics performance is expected to significantly improve once Microsoft releases new DirectX 12 drivers. But according to one popular game developer, that won’t put the console on par with Sony’s PlayStation 4. In fact, it's apparently “physically impossible” for the Xbox One to match the PS4 when it comes to computing power. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Download this app right now: Sleep for iPhone and iPad is now free
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Getting enough sleep is hugely important for our health, but we often overlook just how crucial it really is. Sleep helps improve our ability to learn, it speeds up our metabolism, it improves our mood, it promotes cardiovascular health and it even helps fight disease. As important as sleep is, it stands to reason that the iOS App Store would be flooded with apps that claim to help you get a better rest each night. Finding a good option can be difficult, but it becomes significantly easier when one of the top-rated options becomes free for a limited time. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Mailbox, the best email app on the iPhone, is coming to Android and PC
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies

Mailbox is a fantastic app. It's so great, in fact, that Dropbox spent $100 million to acquire it last year. The Mailbox app helped me destroy email, and for that I will forever be grateful — but there has always been one huge problem with it: there's isn't any desktop or Android client. As Dropbox announced on Wednesday, however, that won't be the case for much longer. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

LEAK: Does this leaked image show iOS 8 on the iPhone 6?
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
An screenshot that supposedly shows iOS 8 running on an iPhone 6 has been posted on Weibo, seemingly revealing what Apple’s upcoming new iOS build will look like on a bigger display. While the image is yet to be confirmed, it suggests the home screen will have a five by seven icon arrangement, including the five-app dock row, compared to the four by six grid on current 4-inch iPhones. Furthermore, the image has a rather strange resolution of 1,600 x 966 pixels that doesn’t really resonate with other screen resolutions Apple uses on existing iPhone and iPad models. US Air Force looking into using Google Glass on the battlefield
by Guest Jared Peters- 0 replies
The US Air Force’s BATMAN (Battlefield Air Targeting Man-Aided (K)nowledge) research team has recently been testing Google Glass for use in the Air Force, and so far, they like what they’ve been able to do with test units. So far, they’ve tested using Glass in many different scenarios, and thanks to its low power, low footprint design, it’s been fairly helpful. It’s also a nice bonus that Glass sits above the eye and doesn’t obstruct vision, which would be a key element in giving these devices to ground troops. On top of using the hardware to help out, the research team is looking into developing proprietary bits of code to overlay on Glass’s software to aid in mili…

Comcast rumored to be considering their own mobile service provider business
by Guest Christian de Looper- 0 replies
According to recent rumors, Comcast might branch out from simply being an Internet service provider, and move into the mobile wireless market. According to The Information, Comcast has been considering creating a nationwide mobile network that relies heavily on WiFi. Rather than purchasing blocks of the wireless spectrum, Comcast would instead use its WiFi hotspots to provide service for a large number of devices. This makes sense considering its WiFi network is growing larger and larger, with over a million public access points. Despite the large area covered by Comcast, there will be spots without Comcast WiFi, which is where other carriers, such as Verizon, would st…
