Ridiculously low price revealed for upcoming ‘Nokia X’ Android phone
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Nokia, the company that adopted Windows Phone because its CEO was too afraid of Samsung to shift to Android, is about to debut its first Android phone. By all accounts, the handset will debut in under two weeks at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show. Rumors suggest the Normandy will feature a 4-inch display with 854 x 480-pixel resolution, a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, microSD support, a 5-megapixel camera and dual SIM support. And now, a leak out of Vietnam gives us our first idea of how aggressively Nokia has priced its first Android handset. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Google bought Motorola for $12.5B, sold it for $2.9B, and called the deal ‘a success’
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Rarely does a company offload a $12.5 billion purchase for less than $3 billion and call the deal "a success," but that's exactly what Google's head of mergers and acquisitions Don Harrison called the Motorola deal. In an interview with Forbes, Harrison did the math on the deal and said that in the end, Google came out on top. We explained as much in our recent coverage of the deal, but the basic idea is that the sale of Motorola's home business, cash on hand, deferred tax assets and the $2.91 billion Google received from Lenovo mean that in the end, Google paid less than $3.5 billion for Motorola's patent portfolio, which it retained after the sale. Apple’s iWatch won’t take the same path as other failed smartwatches
by Guest Chris Smith- 0 replies
While existing reports on the rumored iWatch are already offering different views on whether advanced sensors capable of monitoring glucose or hydration levels will be included in the smartwatch, what’s clear is that Apple appears to be very interested in adding more and more non-invasive sensors to monitor various health-related parameters in its future devices. The company has hired even more people with “deep biomedical and sensor technology expertise” in the past few months, Network World reports, than reported so far. In other words, the company is taking a completely different path than rivals, which have thus far launched smartphone companion products will little t…

AcDisplay app brings the Active Display feature to your Android KitKat device
by Guest Alihassan Mahdi- 0 replies
Active Display is a feature that most of the Android devices lack. Moto X was the first phone to implement the Active Display feature and it was soon ported to other devices by the ChameleonOS developers. Active Display works by displaying your notifications on your display in a minimalist fashion, without turning on your entire display. It gives you the information you want while saving battery. You can either ignore them, open the notifying app or view the notification’s preview. The drawback of the Active Display feature created by the ChameleonOS team is that it’s limited to phones with a custom ROM. Thanks to XDA developer AChep, any device now running on Android …

Nokia X gets priced in Vietnam
by Guest Robert Nazarian- 0 replies
The Nokia X has been listed at an online retailer in Vietnam as the Nokia X A110. The listed price is between 2.2 million and 2.5 million VND. That equates to roughly $110. To give you a point of reference, the same site has the Nokia Lumia 525 (Windows Phone) for 3.39 million or $160, but it also has 512MB more RAM and an extra 4GB of internal storage. It was a few weeks ago when (former) Motorola CES Dennis Woodside said that they would like to offer a smartphone for $50. We are just about there folks. The retailer in question is in the source links below, but we can’t seem to find the listing. Nokia might have forced them to remove it. sources: techrum.vn /…

Are you feeling excited about the officially announced merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable? If not then you aren't alone — there are plenty of other groups out there who aren't keen on letting the two most hated ISPs in the United States combine to form a broadband behemoth. The Wall Street Journal has written a handy little primer of all the challenges that Comcast will face in its quest to become the supreme overlord of American Internet service providers. In short, here are three groups that could help kill off the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

Microsoft’s worst nightmare has been realized: Windows apps are coming to Chrome OS
by Guest Zach Epstein- 0 replies
Microsoft's worst nightmare used to be a world where the media tablet category got so hot that it ate into PC sales. That nightmare is no longer a nightmare, however, because it has become a reality. Taking its place, then, is a world where computers powered by Google's Chrome OS are just as capable and versatile as Windows computers. Unfortunately for the Redmond, Washington-based technology giant, that nightmare has become a reality as well. Continue reading... Via BRG - Boy Genius Report

New iOS tweak completely wrecks Snapchat’s entire reason for existing
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies
Why has Snapchat become so popular? That's easy: Because it gives people a way to send messages that will be automatically destroyed soon after recipients open them, which means that you can send people confidential information without fear of it getting passed around. However, Cult of Mac points out that a new iOS tweak has the potential to gravely undermine Snapchat's central appeal because it allows Snapchat users to save the snaps that others have sent them for future reference. Smartwatches and fitness bands to hit the big time this year
by Guest Jacob Siegal- 0 replies
Wearable tech failed to make a huge impact last year, but 2014 could be the year that smartwatches and fitness bands finally take off. Canalys forecasts that over 17 million smart bands will ship in 2014, following massive growth in the second half of last year. Based on the analyst's findings, 1.6 million smart bands shipped in the second half of 2013 alone. Leading the way were Fitbit's Flex and Force bands in the "basic" category and Samsung's Galaxy Gear in the "smart" category. We might not have found much to like in the Galaxy Gear, but it apparently managed to knock out the smartwatch competition. With a more capable sequel, Samsung could get a huge head start as t…

How Apple could beat Windows 8 at its own game
by Guest Brad Reed- 0 replies

Microsoft's vision for the future of computing — having one platform across multiple different device types — has always been intriguing. Where it's slipped up, however, has been its execution. The trouble for Microsoft is that it tried to stitch a brand-new touch-centric operating system onto its traditional desktop operating system in a way that polarized many longtime PC users. Now the company is scrambling to appease its spurned desktop users while still keeping the touch-centric features that it knows are vital to staying relevant in the mobile world. Continue reading...
