Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp has some interesting implications. Among them is the fact that Facebook is now starting to challenge mobile operators in major Western markets. German operator e-plus now offers a WhatsApp SIM card that gives users unlimited WhatsApp messaging combined with a mobile data and mobile voice calling package of 600MB and 600 minutes. Another day, another set of iPhone 6 rumors that trickles out from the East. According to the latest report, Apple's next-generation iPhone 6 is getting ready to enter its mass production phase in the coming months. The timing would align perfectly with a launch this fall, which is the timeframe expected by most industry watchers. Interestingly, however, this new report suggests that Apple's second new iPhone for 2014 won't hit mass production until late in the third quarter, which obviously suggests that it won't debut until sometime later in the year or even sometime in early 2015. The Apple vs. Samsung patent showdown has mostly been a one-sided affair so far, as juries have regularly awarded Apple massive sums of money at Samsung's expense. However, FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller thinks that Apple may have finally gone too far with its latest suit that claims $2.2 billion in damages against Samsung and that has the potential to permanently cripple its ability to make a profit from selling smartphones. There are few questions left surrounding the upcoming OnePlus One. The device will be fully unveiled on April 23, but the company has used the time before that to give away information. Recently, they announced the One will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 processor. When they did that, they left out the clock speed and amount of RAM included. Luckily, the company did that today. The OnePlus One will have its quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz bundled with 3GB of RAM. Also, the GPU clock speed will be 578MHz. We’ve seen a video come out earlier showing how well a Samsung Galaxy S 5 can survive drops and being run over by a Tesla Model S. A new video released by TechSmartt tests the waterproof capabilities of the Galaxy S 5. Samsung is releasing this model with IP67 rating for water resistance. This means the smartphone should be able to survive being submerged in water 1 meter deep for at least 30 minutes. In the test, the Galaxy S 5 is submerged in a pool and left to sit for an hour. According to a report from Korean news site Media Today, Samsung has filed a 300 million won ($285,000 USD) complaint against the Electronic Times regarding reporting on the camera in the Samsung Galaxy S 5. It appears Samsung took the unusual move of skipping a step that involves a press arbitration board in Korea and has gone straight to filing a lawsuit seeking damages. Many people use Pushbullet to send links and images to their devices, or to see notifications on their computer, including some of us here at TalkAndroid. Well Pushbullet was updated today to add a number of new features. The new version of Pushbullet, version 13.8 adds Tasker support, as well as the ability to show images associated with notifications on your computer. A couple of bugs were also fixed. The Samsung Gear Fit was released only a few months ago, and many people consider it one of the best looking fitness bands available. Despite this, many people were frustrated that the device could only display information horizontally. Today, however, we found out that all that will soon change. Essentially, the Gear Fit will now be abel to also display information vertically. The new feature was discovered and confirmed in an official Samsung store in South Korea. SyFy's Battlestar Galactica, which itself was a gritty re-imagining of a campy 1970s TV show of the same name, was one of the best science fiction TV shows of the last decade. And now apparently it's getting re-imagined yet again, as Variety reports that Universal is planning to start a film franchise based on the show that will feature a new writing team from the one that made BSG a hit during its run from 2004 through 2009. If you're feeling down lately, you should try spending more face-to-face time with your friends and less Facebook time with them. Pacific Standard directs our attention to a new study conducted by two psychologists at the University of Innsbruck in Austria that finds spending time on Facebook can depress our mood even if we have no particular reason to feel sad. Rumors of next-gen and PC releases for the best-selling Grand Theft Auto V have been floating around since long before the game even launched, but after months of silence from Rockstar, most of us had given up hope for an announcement anytime soon. An upcoming color of the new HTC One (M8) may have been delayed. In fact, it has reportedly been delayed indefinitely. The color we are talking about is the recently-leaked Stealth Red variant. It was originally set for a May release; however, that will not happen. While we do not know the cause of the delay, I am willing to say it was due to production issues with the color. It did not take long for a company’s 64-bit plans to surface. Chinese manufacturer ZTE is reportedly working on a device that will utilize one of Qualcomm’s upcoming 64-bit architecture Snapdragon processors. The codename is ‘Apollo’ and this follows ZTE’s tradition of codenaming devices after Greek mythology. The ZTE Grand S was known as ‘Athena’ in development. So while we know this device will use on of Qualcomm’s beastly processors, we do not know if it will be the Snapdragon 808 or 810. Also, these processors are not expected until at leaset 2015. Google has made a change to their YouTube platform so that users can now cast live videos to their Chromecast devices. This new feature only works when users are accessing YouTube using their desktop web browser where they will find the cast button now available on live streams. This capability is not yet enabled when using the YouTube app on a smartphone or tablet, but it seems like it should not take long for an update to roll out to enable this on mobile devices. We do not see many people focused on the latency of mobile device screens, but that could change as this particular measure gains traction as a selling point. If that does come to pass, the HTC One (M8) will be in a good position as the device reportedly has one of the lowest latencies on record. The latency we refer to is the time between when a user touches the screen and when the system registers that touch measured in milliseconds. The previous record for a consumer device was 67ms measured for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. For comparison, the iPhone 5S clocks in at 75ms while an LG G2 lags behind at 110ms.
