If I told you there were a lot of Android devices in the wild, that wouldn’t shock you. Just about every day there is a new device launched, but just how many are in existence?
According to OpenSignal, a company that gathers crowdsourced data for mobile phone networks, there are 18,796 distinct Android devices this year, up from 11,868 last year. I would never had guessed that high.
However, if I asked you which manufacturer represents the majority of these, I am 100% positive you would get that right. Yuppers, it’s Samsung with 43% of all devices, but that is actually down from 47.5% last year. Interestingly enough 2nd place went to Sony, but only at 4%. Also, 12 out of the 13 most common devices happen to be Samsung.
The other side of the story has to be Android versions. According to OpenSignal, 20.9% of Android devices are running Android 4.4 KitKat, and 14 % are still running Gingerbread. In contrary Apple’s iOS paints a different picture in that 91% of devices are at iOS 7.
