Motorola Assist launched on the original Moto X, and it’s back as Moto Assist. Moto Assist is a contextual learning engine, and it allows you to set up certain actions based on where you are (home or the car) or what you might be doing (in meetings or sleeping). If you’re familiar with last year’s Moto X, you will remember that there was an Assist app. You won’t find that anymore. Instead, Motorola combined all of their features into a new app simply called Moto. The Moto app houses Moto Voice, Moto Actions, Moto Display, and Moto Assist.
Just open the Moto app, tap the gear icon at the top right, and tap on Assist. From there, you will be able to choose your settings for each category: Sleeping, Driving, Home, and Meeting. After that you won’t need to do a thing because it will all happen automatically.
Sleeping
In Sleeping mode, you don’t have to worry about waking up from notifications or calls. All calls will be ignored unless you specify either your Favorites and/or people who call you twice in a row. You can also choose the schedule for when you normally go to bed and wake up.
Driving
Get a text message when you’re driving? No worry because your Moto X will read your incoming text messages to you and give you the opportunity to respond via voice. If a call comes in, you will hear who is calling you so you don’t have to look down, and a simple voice prompt will tell your Moto X to answer or ignore the call. If you like to listen to music through your Bluetooth stereo, you can set it to play automatically. The best part of the Driving mode is that you don’t have to manually turn it on when you get in the car. Your Moto X will sense when you’re driving and automatically turn on the features.
Home
With the Home setting, you simply enter your location, and decide if you want your Moto X to read your incoming text messages and tell you who is calling. This works the same way as the Driving mode and is perfect for those that often leave their phone on the kitchen counter while getting dinner ready.
Meeting
Assuming you’re entering your appointments in your Google Calendar, your Moto X will automatically enter Meeting mode for appointments that are listed as busy. Meeting mode works a lot like Sleeping in that your phone will be silenced from everything unless you choose to receive incoming calls from your Favorites and/or people who call you twice in a row. There is also an Auto Reply function that will send a text message to missed calls from your Favorite contacts.
You might not use all four categories in Moto Assist, but I think everyone can use at least one or two of them. Trust me, once you get used to Moto Assist, you won’t know how you got along without it.
