When we first saw the mock up for the new Nexus, there was a messaging icon that was unexplainably there. With Hangouts being Google’s all-encompassing go-to messaging app, especially after the addition of Google Voice, it kind of seems like another messaging app would be a wasted effort but it appears that Google is working on one nonetheless. However before you go off thinking that this will be a whole new Hangouts it appears that this is will be tested in emerging markets and be similar to WhatsApp.
Google apparently made an offer to buy WhatsApp for $10 billion before Facebook snagged it for $19 billion and as such the search giant looks to be making up for that loss. Unlike Hangouts though, this app will be something different. The app will not require a Google login and unlike WhatsApp it will come with a free price tag.
The app is currently in the early stages of development and expected sometime in 2015. With mobile connections expected to rise in India and the Indian market expected to be the second biggest behind China, Google’s looking to get in on the ground floor. WhatsApp boasts 500 million users and Google appears to want to get in on some of those users. If Google made a WhatsApp like app would you use it? Let us know below.
