Modern mobile chipsets follow the Category 6 or Cat. 6 LTE standard. However, Qualcomm decided to push the envelope with its announcement of an integrated Cat. 10 LTE modem recently. And now, reports from Korea suggest that Samsung could be joining the list with its upcoming Exynos chipset.
This 3 band LTE Cat. 10 compatible chipset will reportedly be capable of providing speeds of up to 450 Mbps according to the report. Although we hope to see this technology being used in the Exynos variant of the upcoming Galaxy S6, it is likely that Samsung will wait until the latter part of 2015 to introduce this new integrated modem/chipset. It is being said local Korean carriers such as LG U+ already have taken necessary steps to support this new standard before the end of the year.
If Samsung decides to use this particular modem with the Galaxy S6, then it will technically be more powerful than the rumored Snapdragon 810 variant which only supports LTE Cat. 6 or 7. Samsung has come a long way with its Exynos range of chipsets and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Korean manufacturer.
