With job cuts on the horizon, Sprint will reduce severance pay by half after Jan 30, 2016

At the beginning of this month, Sprint announced its plans to achieve around $2.5 billion in savings by cutting costs, with a round of job losses looming large on the horizon being just one of the measures. It seems that Sprint is becoming creative in the way it cuts costs, though, if its latest move is anything to go by. As if it isn’t bad enough just losing a job, if an employee receives notification of the job loss after January 30th, he or she will only receive half the severance pay they would have if notified before that date.

Whereas Sprint currently offers 2 weeks of severance pay per full year of service, this will be whittled down by half if an employee receives their pink slip notification after January 30th, 2016.

Melinda Tiemeyer, a Sprint spokeswoman, said that the change in severance pay packages doesn’t mean that the carrier will wait until after January 30th to notify affected employees. She went on to say that notifications will be sent out before that date, and that it was part of CEO Marcelo Claure’s plan to transform the company.

There is never a good time to worry about losing one’s job, but it’s especially unpleasant at this time of year. And now, Sprint employees have to worry not only about if they will receive notifications but when.

Today’s news is just the latest negative press for Sprint, the carrier recently lost an appeal in the state of New York regarding a $300 million fine for failing to collect taxes, it’s facing another fine because of discriminating against customers with low credit scores by charging them more, and it’s also facing a PR backlash because of its decision to cut off broadband internet access to more than 300,000 users.
