A Huawei Watch owner received a test build of Android Wear v1.4 via OTA and got a chance to experiment with some new features. The biggest features are due in part by the addition of the hidden speaker, which now works.
Android Wear v1.4 is yet to release to the public and is the first build that allows smartwatches to output audio if they have the required internals. Out of all the Android Wear smartwatches available, the only ones that can take advantage of the update are the ASUS Zenwatch 2 and the Huawei Watch.
According to a user on Reddit who received a test build of the update, it took a long time to install and was a little unstable. However he did report that the hidden speaker inside the Huawei Watch does indeed work. With this addition he was able to make and receive calls on his watch, output audio through the speaker and set a ringtone. He also noted one feature he didn’t like. In the text-to-speech mode the watch narrated all his notifications in addition to the time and every menu he went into, which he found a little annoying.
It’s great to see what the future holds for Android Wear and hopefully Huawei will continue to make adjustments to the build leading up to an official release. This will make a great addition and potentially add lots of value to the Huawei Watch.
