Just over a month ago, BlackBerry announced that they were going to abandon the Pakistani market due to demands by Pakistani regulators. Pakistan’s Telecommunications Authority was demanding BlackBerry provide backdoor access to encrypted devices. As the year drew to a close, BlackBerry’s Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard announced the government had rescinded their previous orders effectively shutting down Blackberry in the country.
According to Beard, because the Pakistani government decided to reverse course on shutting down sales and activations of BlackBerry devices, the company will continue to operate in the market. This will include sales of their new BlackBerry Priv device.
According to Beard’s announcement, the Pakistani government was demanding access to either customer BES traffic or to BlackBerry’s BES servers. Neither of those was an option BlackBerry could live with, which is why they were willing to walk away from the market.
