Google updated their Android distribution numbers through the beginning of January 2016 with the latest data showing the slow and steady rise of Lollipop and Marshmallow on devices. After knocking on the door in December, Lollipop climbed through the 30% mark and is now installed on 32.6 percent of devices. With only a handful of devices updated thus far, Marshmallow is still on a small number of devices, but the share grew from 0.5 percent to 0.7 percent.

Meanwhile, KitKat remained at the top of the heap with the largest base of installations at 36.1 percent. Depending on where Lollipop peaks at, KitKat could lose that title within the next couple months.

Jelly Bean continues to hold on to a respectable 24.7 percent share while Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo all continue to languish with small shares of the installed base.

Google measures the distribution of Android versions by access to the Play Store.
