Everyone else is getting into self-driving cars, so why not Samsung? There has been rumours that Samsung and BMW are working together on autonomous vehicle “brains”, and now Samsung has said it will be modifying their track to test them on.
Samsung already owns Everland Speedway, which was the first paved track in Yongin, Gyeonggi, South Korea, and plan on modifying the track to do all their testing on. Samsung feels it is much easier to modify a track they already own rather than find new land to build a new track to test autonomous cars on.
A Samsung representative said,
“It is very difficult to find new space to build a racecourse to test autonomous vehicles or get a license to operate one. Samsung already owns Speedway, so we just need to add some features to the existing racecourse.”
Samsung is very fortunate to already own a race track and even luckier that this one was basically being used for nothing for the last few years. Since 2009 it has only been used for test drives, promotional events by auto manufacturers, or for Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee to drive sports cars on.
A race track is great for human drivers to test cars on, but not the best for autonomous cars to practise on. They need specialized obstacles to test out their cameras, radar, and operating system on. Certain modifications Samsung will be doing are adding actual road conditions, simulate urban environments, and more. Also, Samsung said they plan on testing not only their own self-driving technology, but also allowing other automotive manufactures to test theirs on too.
