Netflix has announced plans to clamp down further on customers using proxy tools to access Netflix content outside of their own country.
David Fullagar, Vice President of Content Delivery Architecture at Netflix, today shared a blog post announcing the move, explaining that the group’s technology that spots rule-breakers ‘continues to evolve’.
For now, the group ‘continues to respect’ content licensing by geographic location, although Fullagar says that Netflix is making progress when it comes to offering people across the world the same TV shows and films to choose from.
He said:
“Some members use proxies or “unblockers” to access titles available outside their territory. To address this, we employ the same or similar measures other firms do. This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it.”
“That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are.”
The Netflix figurehead goes on to add that customers that don’t use proxy tools won’t be affected by the changes. Apparently, the overall goal is to ensure ‘everybody can enjoy Netflix without the need for a proxy’.
Earlier this month, Netflix announced a service expansion that means the film-streaming app is now available in nearly every country in the world. Most recently, Netflix made its way to South Korea, Afghanistan, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon and Ethiopia.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings admitted that China is still resisting a Netflix entrance, however.
