It looks like Facebook has just started rolling out a much-anticipated server side upgrade for its Messenger application for Android. Reddit user Unfasten took to the social network earlier today to share a series of pictures, which clearly demonstrate the upgrade running on his Moto X Style.
The update doesn’t bundle much by way of added functionality, but it does bring a gorgeous new interface to Messenger that complies with Google’s Material Design guidelines. One of my favourite design alterations is the inclusion of a Floating Action Button, which can be used to compose a message, place a call, create a group, add a contact and search for friends.
It’s great to see that Facebook has finally done away with the tiresome black notification bar it’s sported for so long, in favour of a grey one, which ties in better with the background of the app. There’s also now an on-off switch instead of the traditional check box to turn on Chat Heads, which is a pretty modest, but effective change that allows for a more modern appearance.
Unfortunately, Facebook hasn’t officially announced the update, so we don’t know when the next wave of people will receive the OTA. However, we will be sure to keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as it starts rolling out – so be sure to check back.
