So, it’s 2016, and one of the year’s burning questions has to be whether HTC, the former King of Android, will manage to turn things around or whether it will sink entirely into the mire. A lot depends on its upcoming flagship, which will apparently launch in two variants at a separate event after MWC 2016.

According to the serial leaker, @LlabTooFeR, HTC will launch the One M10 (codename Perfume) in China and South-East Asia sporting a MediaTek processor, while European and American markets can expect to see a variant powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820. Both models are expected to run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and Sense 8.0 at launch.

I'm expecting 2 versions of the device: Qualcomm 820 (for EU and US markets) and MTK based (Mainly for China and South-East Asia)…

The dedicated launch event will be held after MWC 2016 in March, with the handset set to be available for purchase sometime in April. You may be asking why HTC has decided to hold a separate launch event, and all I really have to say is remember what happened at last year’s MWC? HTC announced the One M9 a couple of hours before Samsung blew everyone away with the beauty of its Galaxy S6 and S6 edge handsets. While the HTC One M9 (reviewed here) was in no way a terrible phone, the fact it was a reimagining of the M8 didn’t do it any favours when compared with the glitzy Galaxy S6. Then there were the rumours about the Snapdragon 810 overheating, and it was just too much for the M9 to recover from.

Personally, I think that if HTC is ever going to ease out of its financial woes, 2016 is the year, especially if the rumours of the Taiwanese handset maker making not one, but two Nexus devices this year are true. While it’s still only a rumour, further credence has been added with the leak of the alleged code names for the devices – T50 and T55. Until it’s official, though, HTC have to come good with the ‘Perfume’, or One M10 as it’s likely to be called.
