Google has just released a new version of its Text-to-Speech application for Android. This latest build brings a new feature to the service which enables users to select gender and voice variations. These voice packs can be downloaded from the search engine giant’s servers and can be applied to any language — so you can have a strong Russian accent for English playback or a light Swedish pitch for Russian output. However, the voices do appear to be automatically generated alternatives of the stock audio that can be heard when using Google Now, which means that there are some similarities to the default female tone.
Unfortunately, Google hasn’t made setting these voice packs an easy task as it’s buried the configuration screen behind a slew of menus. To activate it, you’ll need to open Settings, locate and select Language & Input, tap Text-to-Speech Output, hit the gear icon next to Google’s TTS engine, click Install Voice Data and, finally, choose the voice pack you’d like to use. Obviously, you’re going to want to hear all the voices before you make your decision. To do this, press the small Play arrow next to the options.
To install this update on your smartphone or tablet, open up the Play Store, toggle the hamburger menu by swiping in from the left-hand side of your display, select ‘My Apps’, click on ’Text-to-Speech’, then tap the ‘Update’ button. Alternatively, you can install it instantly by sideloading the APK, which is available to download by hitting the link below.
