YouTube announced today a new feature called Custom Blurring, which will let content creators blur moving objects on the fly.
Normally a content creator would have to delete the video, re-edit, and then reupload the video to YouTube to add blur, but now YouTube let’s you do it right within the website.
YouTube notes that there are a lot of ways to use the Custom Blurring feature; however, it was built with anonymity in mind. In other words, the idea is that creators can easily blur faces, license plates, and other sensitive information in already uploaded footage.
So, how does it work? First, choose the video you wish to edit, and select “Custom Blurring” under the Blurring Effects option in the Enhancements tool. From there, you’ll be able to draw box around what you want blurred, and the Custom Blurring tool will be able to blur the object, even as it moves in the video. Of course, you also have full control of when the blur starts and stops, as well as the ability to move the blurred area and even choose how large the blurred area is.
Here’s the official word from YouTube:
“With this new Enhancements feature, available on desktop versions of YouTube, you can blur any object in your video, even as it moves. Whether you want to blur sensitive information such as a license plate or cover up a wardrobe malfunction without reshooting an entire scene, the new Custom Blurring tool will let you blur objects throughout your video, right within YouTube.”
All in all, this new feature is bound to be very useful. No longer do you have to delete, re-edit, and re-upload a video over some small mishaps you forgot to cover up in your footage. The ability to do it right within YouTube will make things much easier.
